Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

I'm currently sitting on a train with humans coughing, spluttering, feet on chairs and all manner of other unhygienic practices. I dont think dogs are really the issue.

Except people aren't allergic to other people and won't have a life threatening reaction to being around them.

Clarich007 · 07/02/2023 18:32

I like dogs, but just don't think it's hygienic having dogs in a cafe, and sometimes the smell of them is really off putting. I live near Bakewell in Derbyshire, and you can't move for them. However, the pub we go in for lunch only allows them on the wooden floor, not the carpet area or on the furniture.

Twizbe · 07/02/2023 18:32

Every new independent coffee shop near me (London) is now 'dog friendly'. I hate dogs being in places that serve food. It's unhygienic.

It's a shame as I want to support them but I don't like dogs in there.

There is on that thankfully has a sign saying they cannot have dogs inside. I go there.

Blossomtoes · 07/02/2023 18:33

I think all this disgust about shit on the beach might be understandable if water companies weren’t dumping vast quantities of human sewage in the sea. The imperceptible traces of dog shit left after an owner’s cleared up wouldn’t harm anyone.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/02/2023 18:35

Plenty of places don’t allow dogs. If you’re allergic, why not just go to those instead?

WFHbore2023 · 07/02/2023 18:37

Sorry - dog mess anywhere is disgusting, and I always pick up after mine but I bet all I have that mess left by humans (that isn't dog mess) on beaches causes more of an issue than dog poo. People leave nappies full of shit too, that's not a dog owner only problem.

Threads like this are always wild.

There's always people that can't step out the front door without being mauled by dogs, can't get a pint in the pub without the head being 99% dog slobber.

I cannot believe that there aren't plenty of options for places to go that don't allow dogs.

Bars, nice restaurants, cafes inside of shopping centres, places attached to hotels. a lot of chains don't allow dogs.

Typical answer from a dog owner! There are very few places left where dogs arnt allowed to go in, its become ridiculous & a huge problem for people who are scared, allergic or don't like them!

Everyone seems to be saying that, but literally all 8 cafes in the town I live in, and all 12 cafes in the next town are dog-friendly.

I’m not allergic so can go in them, just get irritated when owners don’t control the dogs (a minority of owners, but I’d say there are problematic dogs at least 75% of the time I go). But there are genuinely no local options for people with dog allergies.

As people have said a million times on this post! There are very few places left to hide from the dogs!

LexMitior · 07/02/2023 18:43

I'm not a relativist. The fact that sewage companies act badly does not excuse dog owners allowing their dogs to crap on the beach. That's on the owner, not the dog, btw. It doesn't know any better.

Judellie · 07/02/2023 18:45

There are NO dog free places where I live either - so we just don't go anywhere.

Blossomtoes · 07/02/2023 18:45

That really isn’t true. You could always test the theory by borrowing a dog and then try to go for lunch in a cafe. You’d find it very illuminating.

WFHbore2023 · 07/02/2023 18:47

Also, the hygiene argument -

Do none of you have friends that have dogs? Do you not visit them? Have a cuppa? Or dinner or anything?

Talapia · 07/02/2023 18:47

Moonface31 · 07/02/2023 10:52

There are plenty of places that don't allow dogs. Go in one of those, problem solved.

Agree with this..

If you're allergic or it bothers you so much, surely you'd check if it's a dog free environment before going in!

WFHbore2023 · 07/02/2023 18:49

Dog owner, or just someone who isn't over embellishing the facts?

I've literally just named loads of places that dogs would be allowed to go

notsosoftanymore · 07/02/2023 18:51

@kc431 Nah, I live in a commuter market town 30 mins from London and they’re literally everywhere. Shops, pubs, cafes, restaurants, bars, trains. I even went to a hairdresser who brings his dog to work and it was licking my legs as I was getting my hair cut!
Go to some more “rough” towns nearby and you barely see dogs there though, so maybe it’s a middle class thing. (don't know how to make grey)

Yep, same where I am in the Cotswolds. Thing is, I remember back in, say, 2015 when I still had my old dog, being turfed out of PC World by a rude security guy in a well known Midlands city and you literally couldn't take dogs anywhere in public. Is it lockdown causing a massive increase in the number of dogs? I used to love dogs but there are so many now, everywhere, so much poo, so much failure to control.
Happened to be out on a walk today. Couple went by on a narrow path with the guy barely managing to hang onto a young, strong, lungeing lab. After we passed he said to the still-lungeing dog 'good boy'. Pathetic lack of control and understanding.

Dogcafedreamer · 07/02/2023 18:53

@Flinstones I hadn't realised! Excellent 👍 although I'm not a fan of chain coffee shops, but good to know.

Good choice! It leaves the dog owners not being judged and eyes rolled at.

LexMitior · 07/02/2023 18:56

I don't agree with the no dog free places. In London, that is most places!

The day I sit down in central London and there's a dog looking at my lunch then I know things really have changed. Countryside has always had lots, but then people didn't used to eat in pubs or take their kids there. So it was a non issue

xprincessxjanetx · 07/02/2023 18:57

This would put me off and I wouldn't be able to eat. I think there should be certain areas that are dog-free so it pleases both people.

It's unhygienic if they sit on the chopping board ay

I went to get my hair cut a couple of weeks ago. A rare opportunity to be pampered and get some much needed pace and quiet. Two women turned up with their dogs. Who brings their dog to a hair salon? They were licking the floor and kept getting in the way. I don't understand why they were there.

Twizbe · 07/02/2023 19:04

The dog not friendly places vs the dog friendly ones are hard to tell apart sometimes.

Even my local Costa had a dog in the queue the other day.

My SiL is a lockdown dog owner (and a rubbish one at that) she takes her dog everywhere. She brought it to the pub on Xmas eve for a drink. Why couldn't she leave it at home (with her parents?) we didn't bring our kids out with us?

The hair salon I go to has 2 resident dogs! One of them likes to curl up on your knee. I love it

I sympathise, OP. My kid is severely allergic to dogs and has to take asthma medication and suppressors if he is in a place where dogs have been. It's so depressing that people are more offended if their dogs are excluded from a restaurant or pub than if other human beings are excluded. When it was just service dogs it seemed to work out, because it was a rare event, but now everywhere you go, there are big fluffy dogs swishing their tails all over your child's clothing and leaving dog dander that will cause allergic reactions and asthma. It's horrible how callous people can be towards other people.

I'm sorry your son has to go through this, it's horrible. I couldn't agree more with you how so many people simply don't care because dogs needs trump all.
