Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

We live in a rural area and dogs are welcome in pubs and cafes. Lovely, we take ours sometimes. Rather dogs than screaming children

Dogcafedreamer · 07/02/2023 18:08

@lieselotte oh well that's life! You'll just have to go to the limited places.

It's the owners choice how they run their cafes etc, you can use those horrid sterile chain places like costa or Starbucks. They seem to be everywhere anyway.

They also allow dogs in! There is no where to escape them!!

I sympathise, OP. My kid is severely allergic to dogs and has to take asthma medication and suppressors if he is in a place where dogs have been. It's so depressing that people are more offended if their dogs are excluded from a restaurant or pub than if other human beings are excluded. When it was just service dogs it seemed to work out, because it was a rare event, but now everywhere you go, there are big fluffy dogs swishing their tails all over your child's clothing and leaving dog dander that will cause allergic reactions and asthma. It's horrible how callous people can be towards other people.

otterlyr · 07/02/2023 16:38

This. If you care this much just go somewhere that isn't dog-friendly.

I'm allergic to dogs as well, but people who have dogs need places to go.

Yeah, your dog doesn't actually have to accompany you everywhere you go.

I sympathise with you, your poor child. It has become a ridiculous thing when people are offended by not allowing dogs inside places. I literally can not believe the posts that have been on her today about this!

It does if you’re having a day out to walk said dog on the beach or round a lake. What are you supposed to do with it when you want lunch or a cup of tea? It either goes with you or gets shut in the car. There’s no way I’m doing the latter

LexMitior · 07/02/2023 18:20

This is a countryside issue? I never see this in an urban environment. People do not take their dogs to the pub, cafe or restaurant in cities. Perhaps it's the perception that there's not much space. Dogs seem to be allowed outside pubs where there is a garden but not allowed where kids are (good reasons).

You might see a guide dog. That's it.

Flinstones · 07/02/2023 18:21

The beach!! Another place people can't go without being attacked by other people's "it's just being friendly" dog!

JamSandle · 07/02/2023 18:21

I'm currently sitting on a train with humans coughing, spluttering, feet on chairs and all manner of other unhygienic practices. I dont think dogs are really the issue.

otterlyr · 07/02/2023 18:22

They do where I live but only in particular places which are dog friendly.

It's not really a big deal though. Just look up whether it's dog friendly before you go. If you don't like dogs then go somewhere else. This is no different to staying away from big family chain restaurants like Harvester etc if you don't like kids running around, surely.

Different places suit different people so do your research before you go and everyone's happy.

LexMitior · 07/02/2023 18:22

Dogs on the beach... now that is totally shit.

I’ve never been attacked by any dog on a beach or anywhere else. They’re all too busy running around, chasing one another, retrieving their ball or barking at the waves.

I've literally never been attacked by a dog on a beach and I live on the coast and walk on the beach most days.

(Disclaimer: I also have allergies and don't own a dog so have no reason to defend them!)

LexMitior · 07/02/2023 18:23

Aw no people allow their dogs to literally crap on the beach. It's awful. So nasty for kids.

Mine’s picked up, just like it is everywhere else.

Astralitzia · 07/02/2023 18:25

I remember as a child on family holidays having to check in advance and having a special dog-friendly guide when it came to going to pubs or restaurants in the evenings for food. You couldn't leave the dog in the bed and breakfast or the tent on its own, so it had to go with you.

I'm glad it's no longer quite that difficult, although I still find quite often dogs aren't allowed in many places so planning ahead is still key.

LexMitior · 07/02/2023 18:25

Well perhaps there are exceptions but sadly, dog shit on a beach is not uncommon.

HerbalTeaAndCake · 07/02/2023 18:25

Moonface31 · 07/02/2023 10:52

There are plenty of places that don't allow dogs. Go in one of those, problem solved.

🤷‍♀️

Flinstones · 07/02/2023 18:25

No there not, the second they see you because they are generally off a lead they head over for a over friendly jump up, etc. then a ridiculous dog owner shouts "there just being friendly" I am scared of dogs & it's tiresome everywhere I go I have to deal with dogs & there ridiculous owners.

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 07/02/2023 18:26

YANBU

Its gross and I’ve found dog hair in my food before in ‘dog friendly cafes’

Years ago I was in a dog friendly restaurant and there was a woman with a little happy terrier thingy under the table.

The waitress brought our meals out which were fajitas on sizzling skillets.

The dog out of nowhere leapt out in front of her feet and the poor girl went flying, as did our food. She hurt the dog in the process but she also had a bleeding nose. She’s lucky she didn’t burn her hands on the skillets.

The twat dog owner banged on about “oh my poor baby did the nasty lady hurt you” and the dickhead restaurant owner actually told her off!! My friend I was with is a nurse and we were helping her. I did say to the owner this is the risk of a dog friendly cafe, and the poor girl was hurt, and also can you make us some new food we are starving. He actually seemed annoyed that we didn’t go “oh it’s fine we don’t need to food we ordered”.

People leave all kinds of nasty shit on beaches. Hot barbecues, soiled nappies, broken glass bottles...

Nah, I live in a commuter market town 30 mins from London and they’re literally everywhere. Shops, pubs, cafes, restaurants, bars, trains. I even went to a hairdresser who brings his dog to work and it was licking my legs as I was getting my hair cut!

Go to some more “rough” towns nearby and you barely see dogs there though, so maybe it’s a middle class thing.

LexMitior · 07/02/2023 18:27

Sorry, dog shit is literally actual shit and I draw the line. The other things are repellent but shit in the sand, ugh. Really nasty. Not like you can bin it very safely yourself.

Anyway, not the core of the thread but a serious dislike
