Just watching tonight's Vera. Obviously men should be allowed in womens' hostels. Daren't make a comment out loud as the teenagers have swallowed woke hook line and sinker.

Both my youngest went through an anti JKR stage. All blown over now.

Yes, mine have emerged on the other side with their eyes well and truly open now. I totally get the walking on eggshells though. You just don't need the conflict in your own home while you're trying to watch a bit of Sunday night comfort telly. YANBU OP.

Ask your two intelligent children why there is no controversy around Trans Men invading biological men’s spaces and rights. Do they hear of men complaining of TM in their prisons or their sports? Have they heard countless stories of biological men feeling uneasy and threatened around a TM that still has their female genitalia? Get them to explain intelligently why there appears to be a vast difference between the Trans Men and the Trans Women issues. They’re intelligent so they should be able to give intelligent, well thought out answers.

All other issues aside, it just didn't fit in any way with the awful estate agent character. He was shown to be small minded and a trans girlfriend was completely unrealistic.

I do have some sympathy with the trans community just getting on with their lives but this forceful pushing at boundaries which exist for good reason is doing so much damage.

I don't understand why no one is saying this from within. Well I do understand... because they'll receive the same treatment as terfs.

Agree - no way would Vera be that accepting of a male in a women's hostel.

I don't think this was from an Ann Cleeves Vera novel - it was a female-sounding name given as the writer.

I'm going to add, also, that we were presented with an evil female little person AND an evil black lesbian. Just noting the juxtaposition with the poor, innocent, oppressed trans person...

I emailed a complaint to itv today and got a response - ‘we will pass this onto our production team’ blah blah blah

the character itself stuck out like a sore thumb - it added absolutely nothing to the plot and was all too obviously inserted solely to deliver the message that men belong in women’s spaces because apparantly women are not valid and have no rights in the face of a man’s selfish desires. I’m rapidly losing faith in Vera - the last two episodes have not been great and the most recent was merely a woke hammer written to cudgel the audience. My 20 something daughter just rolled her eyes and shook her head at the scene in question. She knew exactly what the wokester who wrote this episode was up to.

I wonder how many people they alienated with that throwaway line?

I knew, when I saw your thread name, what it was about. I too was disappointed that only the man's feelings were taken into account and not any of the women who would feel anxious, uncomfortable, afraid of his in their single sex, SAFE space . The women were given NO consideration. It is ever thus.

It's very interesting because one of my friend's daughters, who is 16, has said she completely agrees with me but daren't say what she really thinks at school for fear of being cancelled herself!!

Not sure I followed this. Is it a man pretending to be trans and showing Vera's collusion up? Or someone who is really trans identifying? Either way, not a lass and never can be.

It says something about the way MN is going that, from a two-word title and not having even seen the episode in question, I knew this was going to be a trans thing.

There's no such thing as "really trans", though. No human has ever changed their sex.

I just think 'really trans' means someone who truly thinks they are trans, as opposed to someone pretending. Trans people don't change their sex, even if 'really trans'.

How about the ones where males and their accolades try and figure out ways to get into women's spaces and change the language we used to talk about women's experiences?

This is what I said to mine. Where are all the trans men trying to infiltrate men’s same-sex spaces, sports places, awards etc? ie. none. And why do you think that is?

I was also shocked to hear ds proclaim that men are just as much at risk of violence and murder from women as women are from men. I set him straight on that one I can tell you - not sure how I didn’t combust!

A lot of it is just being young and ignorant - it’s our job as parents to set them straight. They can do with that info as they choose, but at least we’ve tried. And il never give up trying.

But Vera didn't really have to say anything at all - the whole scene was a little lecture right in the middle of an episode. The question was how did the transwoman meet the deceased. The answer had no bearing on the plot. The transwoman could have met the the deceased anywhere. They key thing was that the deceased had stuck for the transwoman - and that also could have happened anywhere - pub, street, anywhere.

It was just the writer using the fact that his or her hands were on the levers of a popular show to get a piece of proaganda out there. A little lecture for those us not on team.

It was also false information - the transwoman said they were asked to leave the women's hostel because "I was a threat" - that's not why. It is because biological men are potentially a threat and we exclude men because we don't know which the bad ones are. Because this transwoman was a nice character it does not mean accessing women's spaces is ok but nore does it mean that anyoen would believe they were a threat just that they might be. And the fact that it was brought up at all and the way it was framed showed it up for the propagnda it was.

I didnt get that from that scene at all, to me it explained what this person was doing in a very expensive flat, the bruise on the face, the fact Vera was dealing with a person in an abusive relationship.

I also dont agree that its wrong to say they were not a threat. I think that bought up, exactly what you are saying, we dont know which transwoman is a threat and which are not, so its safer assuming they are all threats

The character Rae is played by a trans-woman called Mary Malone. This is one of her first jobs and I applaud the casting agent for this decision. She is there to clearly demonstrate that the murder victim was a decent man, protecting a very vulnerable person in a very toxic environment. I fell over this thread a few minutes ago and am frankly appalled by the comments. I too believe that safe places for women are essential, but this program illustrates the point that there are many ‘grey’ areas. Mary Malone is open about being a trans woman, and is currently trying to raise funds to support her gender affirming healthcare.

It’s almost like this website it’s primarily aimed at intelligent women concerned about things that affect them as women and also their children - amazing isn’t it!
