Why do people keep voting the tortes in again and again

Thomasina79 · 29/01/2023 18:34

Not wanting an argument, just wondering. Another Tory has been dismissed for dishonesty and day after day we hear of stories about people having to choose between heating and eating. Surely people realise we need a change of government? The NHS and other support services such as teachers are on strike. What next?

Because the opposition last time was disgracefully shit.

radiatorcurve · 29/01/2023 19:14

I will vote Tory in case my child's school fees go up 20% is the most depressing thing I've read today, and I've been loafing on the internet way too much.

Fuck those nurses' pay rises if Tarquin and Jocasta might have to go to a normie school for normie plebs, right? I mean, the nurses can just go to a food bank on the way home from their 12 hour shift.

Christ on a bike.

Vote Torte

Why do people keep voting the tortes in again and again
Januarysickandtired · 29/01/2023 19:16

Because the alternative is worse!

DarkDarkNight · 29/01/2023 19:17

Someone replied on Twitter to a similar question and said some people would rather burn a tenner than have someone else gain a fiver. I think that sums a lot of it up.

Florenz · 29/01/2023 19:19

Everyone votes for their own interests, the Tories just do a better job of that or they have over the last 15 years or so anyway.

EveSix · 29/01/2023 19:21

"*Mum1976Mum · Today 19:00

That may be true but many schools are shit now. As I said, even if they can be turned around, that would be too late for my kids so I want them to stay private. It may be selfish but I’m not sacrificing my child’s education for anything.*"

You win, hands down, at illustrating the answer to OP's question.
Me, mind blown.

@Thomasina79 what's the alternative? What are labour's answer to any of the current problem? There is a lot of criticism of the tories by Keir Stamer but I haven't heard of any feasible solutions offered

See o feel for the first time in ages the opposition are actually offering solutions.

2 of which the Tory's have used but just rebranded.

I remember in the summer when they were infighting over who took over from Johnson - who was on his second holiday of the summer by then - and one journalist having a pop at Starmer for not having a credible plan for the energy crisis. He isn't even in charge!

But..... he was very clear and said they were currently costing up some ideas and he'd announced them before the Tory's even had a leader - let alone an idea.

Then they got a leader - who crashed the economy further in 6 short days.

flabdab · 29/01/2023 19:22

I voted lib-dem, and we have a lib dem MP in our area, with Conservatives generally in second place and Labour a long way behind. I've never voted Conservative, at least not yet. I vote for the best candidate locally. I don't like tribalism - I judge people on their merits and think there are good and bad people in every party. I like Rishi Sunak and Jeremy Hunt, but disliked Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng. I also like Keir Starmer, and liked Tony Blair and John Prescott. I was neutral about Jeremy Corbyn, who just seemed a bit weak. But I can't stand gobby Angela Rayner, and generally dislike angry beligerant Labour supporters who talk about the cost of living crisis as if it was all the Conservatives fault (with no reference to Covid and Ukraine) and show very little understanding of how the economy works.

For one thing I’m not the sort who’s going to blame the government if you are having to choose between heating and eating, unless you are too unwell to work or have a disability.

For the rest of us I find it shameful that someone would blame the state for their income.

If you get paid by the state for whatever reason you’re more likely to vote Labour. It’s similar self interest.

Danikm151 · 29/01/2023 19:24

Because the turnout for voting is poor.

Our voting goes by seats rather than the actual number of votes. Areas where more seats are won tend to be more affluent or the older generation who will not change their voting stance and are more likely to vote,

Because there is concern that the Labour Party are like this; people who can’t put together a coherent sentence never mind a policy.
Also because I am a Jewish woman not a good thing to be under a Labour government.

MarshaBradyo · 29/01/2023 18:38

Better to ask why Labour keep losing

100% this. As a life long labour voter, I’m gutted they are missing this open goal. I’m in Scotland in a naice area where labour will never get in. I’m seriously considering voting Tory next time round to try to stop the SNP majority. And because labour are shit when it comes to trans ideology. It’s very depressing.

SherbetDips · 29/01/2023 19:31

I am Jewish too and I recently donated to a gofundme for someone in the community whose daughter needed emergency private medical treatment (NHS failed her appallingly). Her father wasn't a rich man, and it broke his heart to see his daughter suffering just because he couldn't afford private without the help of his community.

I actually think a lot of Jewish people are changing their minds due to cost of living crisis/NHS crisis..a lot of us live in London due to our community and I know plenty of people who don't have the incomes to match but yet have families at a much younger age than most Londoners and also more children. There wasn't much room in the budget in the first place....

Boneweary · 29/01/2023 19:34

If you are poor and vote against your perceived best interests (Labour, natch) this is a sign of your innate stupidity and you’re better off letting a nice guardian reader vote for you.

If you are fairly affluent and vote for your best interests this is a sign of your innate selfishness and you’d be better off letting a nice guardian reader type vote for you.

This is one of the problems. We all have different priorities when it comes to voting. For some it will be the provision of SEN in schools, others it will be ensuring they can still pay for private education, for others it will be related to transport or construction or whatever.

Sparklybanana · 29/01/2023 19:34

Because they are all cut from the same sheet. It doesn't matter who gets voted in because only some people will be happy with what they do and the rest will affected by some policy and hate them. Some will not feel represented by them. Labour politicians also lie just as much as Tories do - because people lie. If you tell the truth then that is also bad. Made a mistake? - very bad and no one will forgive you for it and for a politician, that's the end of your job. No one can "fix" the country- it is full of too many people who need help (basically all of us), medical care is so good its now bad and we're living too long but not paying enough taxes to afford long life. Raise taxes and the people can't afford to live. Don't raise taxes and the country is caught in a debt spiral where we have to pay billions more in interest and the country can't afford to live. Cut taxes and the markets will crash and inflation bites.

Basically. Whoever is in charge can't win- which hapless fools do we vote in next? Dunno. Same difference. The tories aren't riding out with sunshine out of their arses but Labour was bad enough to put them out of power for decades too. I'm willing to give them a shot but their shadow cabinet is hardly making waves. They aren't going to fix this.

ConsuelaHammock · 29/01/2023 19:35

They believe in personal responsibility and don’t want poor people to have children they can’t support. They don’t think you should get something for nothing. They want to keep their money to pass onto their children . They know that if you tax the rich too much they will just leave.

Alexandernevermind · 29/01/2023 19:35

Everyone votes for whoever suits them the best at the time. At the last election the Corbyn Abbot headed Labour Party were unelectable.

Maddison12 · 29/01/2023 19:35

vodkaredbullgirl · 29/01/2023 18:42

Never voted Tory in my life.

Same. Never have, never will

Bluekerfuffle · 29/01/2023 19:40

Because Corbyn, who was the opposition last time, seemed reluctant to do anything about anti-Semitic members of his party and you could always rely on him to be cosying up to some scum-bucket or another. Thoroughly detestable character.

Backtoreality1 · 29/01/2023 19:45

Because there isn't really another option. All politicians are liers....it should be part of the job description. HOwever, I would still trust a conservative government more than a labour one who screw the economy up more than it is already.

Florenz · 29/01/2023 19:45

Most MPs are corrupt at least to some extent. A Labour MP in Sheffield was addicted to cocaine and making fraudulent expense claims in order to pay for his habit. Politics as a profession does not attract decent people.

bakewellbride · 29/01/2023 19:48

Some weird replies on this thread. No-one should be voting Tory imo. What good is 'the economy' when you're in desperate need of an ambulance and there isn't one available for you? It could happen to any of us at any time.
