Why do people keep voting the tortes in again and again

Thomasina79 · 29/01/2023 18:34

Not wanting an argument, just wondering. Another Tory has been dismissed for dishonesty and day after day we hear of stories about people having to choose between heating and eating. Surely people realise we need a change of government? The NHS and other support services such as teachers are on strike. What next?

Because Keir doesn't know what a woman is. And the liberals are even worse. If they lie about that, and prioritise demands if men, what else are they lying about?

Wasn't he asked to explain what a woman is? Thats a but harder than the Tory education secretary answering an interviwers what 8×8 is?

deliciouschilli · 29/01/2023 18:54

Voting for a torte would be better than voting for crappy Labour mens party or the Tories...

Mum1976Mum · 29/01/2023 18:54

I’d love to vote labour but all the secondary schools by us are shit. Even if labour started to pump more money in and turn them around it would be too late for my children. So we spend every penny we have on private school. If labour get in they will take away their charity status even though this will stop children like ours going who certainly aren’t rich and will stop all bursaries going forward. So I can’t vote labour because of this one issue - Tory it will have to be!

chopc · 29/01/2023 18:57

@Thomasina79 what's the alternative? What are labour's answer to any of the current problem? There is a lot of criticism of the tories by Keir Stamer but I haven't heard of any feasible solutions offered

Boneweary · 29/01/2023 18:57

I have to admit that’s a concern for me as well @Mum1976Mum

I am concerned about the policies for education generally under Labour. I’d have to look more into it though as I have to admit I’ve only skimmed over a couple of things.

Also the trans thing as previously mentioned.

Because Rupert Murdoch tells them to.

That's probably the most accurate response I've seen.

Have you thought why state education is on its knees?

It's not just money it was Gove and his ambition to make the curriculum private education dream. Plus ofcourse massive class sizes.

Mum1976Mum · 29/01/2023 19:00

That may be true but many schools are shit now. As I said, even if they can be turned around, that would be too late for my kids so I want them to stay private. It may be selfish but I’m not sacrificing my child’s education for anything.

Tinkerbyebye · 29/01/2023 19:02

Name one party that doesn’t suffer from this? They are all as bad as each other. And until Starmer can come up with a rationale definition of a women, he w9nt be getting my vote

I doubt very much that this was the reason the Tories have been voted in up to now.

I don't think it will decide the next election either.

I also want to send my future child to private school. We live in London, DH's experience in a London state school (that is one of the top 10 in the country) was very bad so god knows how the rest of the schools are like. I also think it's unlikely labour can manage to beef up the schools as DH attended that school under Blair (who really invested in London state schools)! But I am still voting labour because while it would be painful paying the fees esp with the 20% uplift, the Tories have completely mismanaged the country and this would mean your young adult children would find it difficult to find good jobs (in a stagnant economy- practically no economic growth in 12 years of Tory rule), find it difficult to buy homes without your help etc. These are overall much bigger problems and these are also issues that don't necessarily go away even if your DCs go to Oxbridge. My friend who went to Oxbridge still bought the same kind of property that I did (which was fairly cheap for London) and it was not easy. Labour may not solve all these problems overnight but the Tories are making it worse...

Mum1976Mum · 29/01/2023 19:04

Well that’s because it would be painful for you to pay the fees with the extra 20%. We couldn’t do it! So whilst labour say that they will do that to private schools they won’t be getting my vote and I suspect this policy with alienate a lot of would-be voters.

Babyroobs · 29/01/2023 19:04

Grumpybutfunny · 29/01/2023 18:40

Labour isn't any better? Personably I don't want us to take on any further debit so will vote for the party trying to grow the economy and borrow less be that conservative, labour or Lib Dem. Personally I don't think any party looks after middle Britain anymore so a lot are forced to choose the lesser of two evils.

We are renovating a house and the number of trades that have asked for cash shows the level of tax avoidance in this country. It isn't just the wealthy. From my experience over the last year it's anyone not PAYE!! We got offered 3k off building an extension if we had 10k in cash, sure mate give me 5 minutes to move the mattress 😉😂🤣

Agree with this - everyone seems to be trying to avoid taxes- from corrupt politicians to tradesmen. my colleague openly brags in the office how her tradesman partner mainly takes cash in hand. It's not surprising there is no money for anything, everyone is on the fiddle or trying to make money from someone else. Things will reach a crisis soon , there won't be enough people paying taxes for basic services. Everyone just seems to be dishonest, even the ones you think wouldn't be ! And you joke about money under the mattress, it's surprising how many older people actually do this, or move savings etc into others names to still get benefits. I work in this area and so many people openly ask how they can hide money to get benefits. I think people look at the Tories and see them being corrupt and not caring for the average person and just think they will try and get away with whatever they can. I can't say I blame them, I just see less and less people willing to be honest and just out to get what they can for themselves.

That’s a lot of faith in Labour re the economy. I’m not hearing much that will get it going from them though

Marigoldandivy · 29/01/2023 19:05

It’s because of cakeism

XenoBitch · 29/01/2023 19:06

Where I live, the tory MP actually gets stuff done, so the locals keep voting him in.

Boneweary · 29/01/2023 19:07

It’s hard, because I’m not convinced anyone has the answers at the moment.

I was having lunch with friends last week and we were talking about our first teaching positions. We were reminiscing about things I regularly see discussed on here: struggles to recruit, building falling down around us, awful behaviour - but that was in 2004. I hold the probably depressing opinion state education has been bad for a long time if you’re unfortunate enough to be in a particular area.

As I said above I have only skimmed what Starmer has said about education but it doesn’t inspire me to be honest.

I do think he’ll get in and it will be interesting to see what happens.

Crimeismymiddlename · 29/01/2023 19:07

This is a short sighted question, what you should be asking is why Labour-or any other option is not giving a viable, better alternative.
Labour have been a disgrace and fundamentally do not understand that the voting public just want to live well, to feel safe, for services to be decent and my personal pet peeve for there not to rubbish absolutely everywhere.
I would vote for a party that was honest about what they can, and can’t realistically provide, was pragmatic about what was being cut and actually wanted the country to be a great place to live. Labour are not that party.

TheWelshTart · 29/01/2023 19:09

Florenz · 29/01/2023 19:12

Labour let themselves down by pandering to those on the fringe. If they just stuck to the basics, and concentrated on making things better for working people, they'd win a lot more elections than they currently do.
