Why do people keep voting the tortes in again and again

Thomasina79 · 29/01/2023 18:34

Not wanting an argument, just wondering. Another Tory has been dismissed for dishonesty and day after day we hear of stories about people having to choose between heating and eating. Surely people realise we need a change of government? The NHS and other support services such as teachers are on strike. What next?

I wonder if Rishi Sunak will last as long as a torte. Someone set up a YouTube channel, quick.

Quinoawoman · 29/01/2023 18:44

Because people vote for the party that they think will do the best for them personally - not thinking about those less fortunate than themselves. People who are wealthier are more likely to vote.

ThinWomansBrain · 29/01/2023 18:45

Tortes all the way for me🍰
With FPTP, most votes are meaningless anyway, only a really small percentage in marginal seats.

Busybody2022 · 29/01/2023 18:45

The only person I'd trust near downing Street is Larry right now.

mynamesnotMa · 29/01/2023 18:45

Because they are all the same.
At least with the Tortes you know where you stand. They are all self serving bastards in one form or another

purpledalmation · 29/01/2023 18:45

because the labour party have been dire and a worse option. maybe keir Starmer will be a better bet

SocksAndTheCity · 29/01/2023 18:45

I would vote for a torte, especially a lemon one. It would have more dignity, competence and integrity than the current shower, although that isn't exactly hard, is it?

seratoninmoonbeams · 29/01/2023 18:45

FuzzyPuffling · 29/01/2023 18:36

I'd vote for a torte any day. Especially a chocolate one.

Nah. Lemon all the way for me.

MajorCarolDanvers · 29/01/2023 18:45

I held my nose and voted Tory in 2019

Because Corbyn was actually worse the BJ
Because Sturgeon and Nationalism are actually worse the Tories.

However it looks like Starmer can win so I will vote Labour at the next election

WhiskersPete · 29/01/2023 18:46

Because Rupert Murdoch tells them to.

safeplanet · 29/01/2023 18:46

They think it will make them richer & that the Tories see them as the strivers when in reality most are the peasants.

Keyansier · 29/01/2023 18:46

QuertyGirl · 29/01/2023 18:44

@Keyansier

See my previous post.

That's you, that is

Oh, ok. I was just a tad confused - my post didn't mention anything about Jeremy Corbyn, a scruffy jacket, tax, being mean or crying.

FuckabethFuckor · 29/01/2023 18:48

There’s a really interesting podcast that puts this in a broader context — it’s called Jam Tomorrow. Well worth a listen.

Thedogscollar · 29/01/2023 18:48

To quote the Beach Boys....God only knows.
I think we would be better led by the likes of Yvette Cooper or Andy Burnham. They are intelligent and experienced politicians, have something of worth to hear and would make a very credible opposition to the weak and invisible Sunak.
As for the @Keyansier comment pot kettle black. Your lack of self awareness is astounding.

user1497787065 · 29/01/2023 18:49

Would love to see a decent labour candidate in my constituency but there has never been one. For us the choice is Tory or Lib Dem. Would struggle to vote Tory but could not vote Lib Dem

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 29/01/2023 18:49

Because there hasn't been an election since 2019? So the recent news stories can't make anyone vote them out right now. I'd have thought that was obvious to be honest. I think OP just wants to be goady.

As for future elections, I suspect a Labour win which worries me because they seem to have a real dislike for biological women.

TrickorTreacle · 29/01/2023 18:50

We're a 1-party state. Get used to it.

safeplanet · 29/01/2023 18:51

Because people vote for the party that they think will do the best for them personally - not thinking about those less fortunate than themselves. People who are wealthier are more likely to vote.

This is the bit I don't get though as something may be a disadvantage for me initially but then if it improves a public service & benefits society that also benefits me.

I think the Tories have blown it this time. Look at the comments section on the DM website. I have definitely noticed a change in sentiment on there. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Boris is brought in last minute as a desperate last attempt to salvage things. Kier Starmer gets a lot of stick but I think Labour are a lot more electable with him in power. He’s brought Labour more into the centre-ground. I’m not saying Corbyn would have been bad but he was seen as too much of an extreme change for many people. The Tories have been in power for 12 years now but I honestly believe that they will lose at the next GE and we will have a Labour government. If Labour do manage to get in then they will have a massive mess to sort out.

arethereanyleftatall · 29/01/2023 18:52

Because Keir doesn't know what a woman is. And the liberals are even worse. If they lie about that, and prioritise demands if men, what else are they lying about?

socialmedia23 · 29/01/2023 18:52

Same reason why people choose ryanair - except instead of cheap flights, they promise it all but for low taxes. Older voters who have more accumulated wealth find this attractive. I fly ryanair too (sometimes) so I see the appeal. I wouldn't choose them to run the government though but apparently the British public disagrees.

The Tories are the ultimate Ryanair government.

IceyDicey · 29/01/2023 18:53

Because they dismiss them when they have been caught. Croydon council is labour and bankrupt because of labour councillor corruption.

MarshaBradyo · 29/01/2023 18:53

TrickorTreacle · 29/01/2023 18:50

Do you think Labour will lose the next election?

I don’t rate the current Labour Party but think they will likely get in

dew141 · 29/01/2023 18:53

I vote conservative although I'd vote differently if there was a party I preferred. It won't be Labour or the Lib Dems though.

BTW the last thread on this topic cut off at 1,000 posts so if you're genuinely interested, have a look through that.

More controversially, I find a chocolate torte a bit cloying. Just too much. Lemon all the way.

IntentionalError · 29/01/2023 18:54

Because, at the 2019 General Election, Labour’s candidate to be Prime Minister was an unelectable deluded anti-Semitic crank who would have been a threat to U.K. national security. And I say that as a former Labour activist.

Can you imagine how Corbyn would have responded to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine? Based on his response the the Skripal poisonings, he would have advocated immediate & total surrender.
