Why do people keep voting the tortes in again and again

Not wanting an argument, just wondering. Another Tory has been dismissed for dishonesty and day after day we hear of stories about people having to choose between heating and eating. Surely people realise we need a change of government? The NHS and other support services such as teachers are on strike. What next?

Future historians and psychologists are going to have a ball dissecting the this period in the UK. I look forward to the analysis.🫣😆

I would really like to know what drives that extremist minority who still want Brexit no matter how much damage it does to our country.

The Tories are better for the country than Labour.

However there is a good chance given Labour haven ot won since 2005 that Labour might get in this time.

The Tories are only better for the country if you think having a venal corrupt gang of asset stripping liars running things is good for the country.
I don't.

verdantverdure · 08/02/2023 13:21

Personally I liked it when the NHS was available to the people of Britain and we didn't have to have posts on Mumsnet about what to do when there's no ambulance available.

I thought that was better for our country.

Me too, and I liked it when we had a PM and cabinet that weren't convicted for breaking their own rules and revelling in offshore tax dodging.

I don't think most people are.

When they realise they have been lied to which led them to make a wrong decision, most people change their minds and change the decision as soon as they get the chance.

It's only conspiracy theorists fanatics and extremists who don't.

There may have been some naïveté about how much certain politicians were telling bare faced lies.

But now that the lies are clear...

Bloody hell. I can't imagine that voters are such masochists as to vote them again. It's mind boggling. Unless the Russians help again, and surely not?

The Russians got the Brexit they wanted. Weakened the U.K. and the EU. Job done isn't it?

They must still be expecting a return on the donations to the Tories they are making though. I imagine using the UK to launder kleptocrat funds is at least one attraction.

'Facts' or rather forecasts are constantly changing:

January 30, 2023
German economy unexpectedly shrinks in Q4, reviving spectre of recession.

The UK is likely to avoid a recession this year, an economic think tank has predicted.

Labour were rubbish -

I chose January 2025 because 24 January 2025 is the last date for the next general election - but yes, it could be a few months earlier than that.

This shows voters’ priorities

I doesn't show voters priorities - it asks a different question; Which of the following do you think are the most important issues facing the country at this time?

Women's rights is not even an option on the checklist and respondents only had three choices. Abortion featured highly as a voter priority in the recent US elections - but it's probably not one of the top three important issues facing the US at this current time.

Blossomtoes · 08/02/2023 14:06

The new Tory chairman is talking about 18 months @Clavinova. I think personally it will be very soon after the May elections in which they’ll take a hammering because it’ll be that or change leader again. Four PMs in a year would be too ludicrous even for current Tory government.

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/02/2023 14:10

Numerous facts Clav.

Like Brexit would be bad forBritain.
Or people can't change sex.
Or Boris Johnson.

Clavinova · 08/02/2023 14:11

If they change leader they will have to bring Boris back.

They can’t change leader again for the third time in less than a year Clav. Surely even a Tory as loyal as you can see that? It wouldn’t matter who it was.

Just spotted Rachel Reeves on a "naughty list" for not managing her parliamentary credit card correctly in 2015 - that doesn't bode well;

Others to have their cards suspended included Duncan Smith’s Labour opposite number, Rachel Reeves, who owed £4,033.63 at the time.

NB Iain Duncan Smith's card was suspended in error - Rachel Reeves 'cleared her debt.'

Ah come on, Gove has to get a go.

Blossomtoes · 08/02/2023 14:28

MPs – and amount owed when their card was suspended
Ben Gummer – £1,290.07

Brian Binley – £575.02

David Willetts – £1,172.05

Debbie Abrahams – £2,586.90

Eric Joyce – £12,919.61

Iain Duncan Smith – £1,057.28

Ian Liddell-Grainger – £1,023.94

Ian Paisley Jr – £6,195.94

Jack Dromey – £1,328.46

John Woodcock – £1,756.13

Mark Lancaster – £600.00

Mike Crockart – £720.64

Pamela Nash – £6,929.29

Paul Farrelly – £213.00

Rachel Reeves – £4,033.63

Simon Danczuk – £3,645.67

Simon Hughes – £826.56

Stephen Gilbert – £2,925.76

Toby Perkins – £693.30

There are more Tories on that list than all the other parties put together. And there seems to be some disagreement about IDS - Ipsos says it wasn’t a mistake. Although why we’re arguing about credit card bills three governments ago I really don’t know. More barrel scraping Clav, you’re having to resort to it quite frequently these days.

Xenia · 08/02/2023 14:33

The list of voter priority seems about right to me as linked above - 1. economy. 2 housing. 3 immigration (and then things like health just below that).

Clavinova · 08/02/2023 14:34

Did they all aspire to be a 'fully-costed' Chancellor of the Exchequer like Rachel Reeves?

A spokeswoman for Ipsa said: "I can confirm that the payment card in the name of Mr Duncan Smith is currently active. It was temporarily suspended in error and has since been reactivated."

Looks like health in second place on the chart. Women's rights/gender reform has probably moved up to fifth position for me since the debacle in Scotland.

Rachel Reeves wasn’t shadow chancellor in 2015. That was McDonnell.

But a spokesman for Ipsa said it was not a mistake and Duncan Smith’s card had indeed been cut off earlier this year. The watchdog said it had separately made a mistake in relation to the work and pensions secretary’s expenses in May. From your Guardian link.

And the Tories are a proven disaster on all of them over the entire time theyve been in power. The rate of their failure is spectacular.
