And I bloody love the horrified reactions more than the delighted ones:

What???
Oh my god that's a mouthful isn't it?
Is that a name? Oh, I'd call him 'xxx'

It's not even that out there, I think people are just rude, but it cracks me up

OP people saying it's a mouthful makes me winder how many syllables it has.

Not necessarily. Maybe it's Semen.

It's highly amusing what people do for attention without thinking about the consequence for their poor child.

I know you’re obviously not going to tell us but can I ask why it’s marmite? Someone awful already called that, the meaning of the name or the sound of the name?

well this is a click bait thread if ever there was one.

It’s cruel to give a child a name that horrifies others. That’s not just the reactions you will get when he’s a baby, it’s the reactions he will get as a growing child and adult too.

It would be nice to give us the name. Love unusual names.

It's Titsarellabumsqueak isn't it? Getting quite popular now I understand.

Why do you need to know the name? It's not a post about whether or not we were unreasonable to choose the name. Its about where iabu to find it amusing when people are confused/rude 🤷🏼‍♀️

FWIW it's not particularly out there at all, I'm sure you'd be highly disappointed if I revealed the name.

Because when you make a statement like "we named our child a marmite name" you know exactly that posters here will want to know what the name is. You can't have a good opinion without all the details

By not posting it, you want the questions, the outrage when you don't.

Its as bad as vaguebooking and click baiting.

OP are you the sister in law mentioned in the thread last year who was going to call their baby Genghis?

Report
Calphurnia88 · 23/01/2023 08:38

On a serious note though, naming your child something that invokes 'horrified' reactions isn't something to brag about.

He has to live with that name forever.

Yes, imagine the lifelong joy of introducing yourself at work, only to know that people are thinking, Oh no, I can't have heard right, this is awkward, I thought he said his name was Hellzapoppin, that can't be right. 'Horrified reactions' are such an icebreaker!

Why not just be done with it and actually call your baby Marmite [but not if your surname is Sandwich]

Is it Myra?

Haven’t hear the name Myra in years

It’s not fun having a ‘different’ name as a child. They might not be quite as amused at the ‘horrified’ reactions as you are.

You love the horrified reactions but will your kids love them all their life? The strange thing is that people who give their kids these names always have really boring names themselves and think it makes them more interesting to give their kids marmite names. It doesn't.

Are you sure it's a Marmite name? It's just that some people will call it a Marmite name, when it's actually a Runny Dog Poo name: some people will hate it but the other people will also hate it.

Good for you OP. However, have you thought about how your DS might feel or maybe affected by your unusual marmite name at any point in the future?

I worked with someone many years ago and her son had done really well and got selected to go to a sports academy for a sport he loved. Someone at work asked if he was excited etc. He had been awake crying every night since he found out about it. When his mum asked him what was wrong and why he was so upset he said I am worrying about what will happen if someone asks my name. Then he started crying again saying but the big boys will all laugh and make fun of it because everybody else does. This happened over 40 years ago and its as vivid as ever.

Whatever the name, I hope it is the conventional spelling. I hope your child does not have a lifetime of having to correct people.
