We named our baby a marmite name

And I bloody love the horrified reactions more than the delighted ones:

What???
Oh my god that's a mouthful isn't it?
Is that a name? Oh, I'd call him 'xxx'

It's not even that out there, I think people are just rude, but it cracks me up

Not really sure why it's become about Welsh names, they are not particularly marmite names in my experience as it's kind of just obvious they aren't English? As opposed to being names people actually don't like?

A favorite response to one of my kid's names was: "oh! Is that a family name? It's not? Oh...and yet you decided to call him that anyway?"

I mean really 😂

From the opposite side I named one of my DCs a fairly common name and got ; 'Oh! We assumed you would name him something pretentious!' in a baffled tone.

I mean wtaf! Certainly gave us an insight into what that family member thought of us.

See. Those kind of insults make me laugh my head off. 😂😂
My favourite was a nurse at a&e who pronounced my middle one as ‘A well?’ with this obviously unintentional, but utterly baffled tone of ‘what the fuck did I just read?!’ It really lightened the mood on what was quite a stressful day (arm broken in two places with a bone sticking out). I said ‘it’s AH-well’ and she blurted ‘if that’s so much prettier than it looks on paper’ 😂😂😂😂

You might find it amusing but will your kid when he/she goes to school? I was teased mercilessly for years over my name and I seriously resented my parents over it. For kids, this kind of thing is no laughing matter.

My kids are late teens/early twenties. They’re perfectly happy with their names. Two of them go by nicknames as they live outside of Wales (one in England, one in Scotland) and there are pronunciation issues so they use the nicknames for ease, but their friends at home still use their real names as do we as a family and they are fine with that. I asked 2 of them if they’ve ever experienced any issues, they said a few people have been confused by them and had to say them a couple of times, but beyond that nothing.

I was mercilessly bullied using my (very) normal and common name. So it doesn’t follow that unusual always means they’ll be bullied.

I think I can be fairly confident that most people in the U.K. have no idea what Taran means in Romanian. It’s also pronounced differently. So 🤷🏼‍♀️
Im sure there are people who dislike it. I passionately dislike many perfectly common ordinary names because that’s how preferences work. However I like it. He likes it. That’s the only thing that really matters, right?

Exactly. Anyone who hears a name they don't like and immediately goes go ogling to find out in what way they can make it offensive isn't someone you need to care about.
Obv not saying that's LaLuz, just that most people unlike them aren't fluent in many many languages.

We named DS Castiel. It isn't to everyone's taste but then William and Jack and Harry aren't to ours. It suits him, cos names grow onto their kid.

I think it's a bit sad to be getting a kick out of people not liking the name you chose for your child. Thinking the OP probably either doesn't have much else going on in her life atm, or is actually slightly regretting the name herself maybe.. (consciously or unconsciously). Enjoying people's bad reactions like it makes you more interesting for choosing that name or something..

I used to find it quite funny when people were very obviously a bit confused/unimpressed by one of my kids names. It did upset me a bit with my first born because I love her name and was upset others didn’t, but then I thought about the just as many people who would comment how lovely it was, and ask about it and we’d talk about Welsh and decided that I was ok with people not loving it. I grew a thicker skin and over time stopped really caring what other people thought.

Well I don’t live in Romania, and in welsh it means thunder. No one has ever negatively said anything about his name. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Taran also happens to mean peasant/uneducated hillbilly in Romanian.

Pointless thread by someone who no doubt likes to 'tell it how it is' and loves a bit of 'banter'.

From an objective perspective, other than feeling sorry for the kid re his parents, the OP is unreasonable to be reveling in people's reactions. Ultimately their child will receive the same reaction and it'll be tough to deal with. Yeah the issue is with people judging a name, but the reality is OP thinks it's funny rather than an obstacle for their child to overcome. A bit like having the OP as a parent is.

My kids really like their names despite quite a few people pulling faces at them. People can be very weird about names that are perfectly normal names, but just outside of their own experience, my in laws were the worst when we named my eldest Medi- they said it sounded like matey or people would call her a Maid and all sorts of things that have never happened. When had Taran they refused to say it correctly because it was ‘too hard’ it’s literally as it’s spelled: tah-ran.

Dylan was always my favourite name! It’s actually Medi’s middle name as I couldn’t wait for a boy to use it. 😂
Medi means September
Taran is thunder
Awel is Breeze
Seren is Star
Macsen means Greatest and was the welsh name given to the Roman emperor Magnus Maximus.

people do tend to think they are weird or wonderful and no in between really.

I love all your names but especially Seren. I tried to convince my husband to use Seren as our daughter's middle name especially because her first name also means star but he vetoed it. Probably wise now I look back on it!

So it’s so ~zany~ that perfect strangers can’t manage to do the basic “oh how interesting” reaction and are reduced to shouting in shock with they hear it…

… but tame enough that you had no idea it was weird?

Give over. Either you named your kid Pinochet for the bantz or you named it Rebekah and nobody has ever reacted with anything other than “oh how interesting”.
