To be angry over a name

Barbie46 · 22/01/2023 19:55

My baby is 6 months old and we named her a very uncommon name that was special to us. Recently we met an old friend of my husband's, they are still in the same circle but not close friends anymore. He asked us the usual questions about a new baby including her name. He and his partner had a baby in the last few days and called their baby our daughters name.
He did not mention anything about her name when we told them it and I am feeling irrationally angry that they have used our daughters name.

Yes no one knows a name etc but I am with you on this O.P!
You created this lovely name based on family. They clearly copied you. But let it go because everyone in your town will know you created it first and also what can they say if someone asks about their child's lovely unusual name. You have a lovely story to tell, what can they say?!
It's annoying but don't worry now anymore.

Anyone else remember Brookside and Casa Bevron?

Squirma · 22/01/2023 21:18

Wren is a very popular name at the moment. Is it spelt the same as yours?

2chocolateoranges · 22/01/2023 21:18

Since it’s an unusual name then it would piss me off too,

however they will continually get oh that’s the same as @Barbie46 daughter.

we had the same with our eldest, we named him a slightly usual name and then only 4 weeks later another person in our village named their son the same name and the gran of the other child was saying to MiL that she would have been rich if she had £1 for every person who said oh that’s the same as @2chocolateoranges son.

I had similar. Women in small village baby & toddler group named her son the same name as my 2y.o. She heard his name and liked it. I was well chuffed.

I have the same (not very common) name as my parent's best friends' daughter. they loved her name and chose the same one for me - she's less than a year older than me. (we are both in our late 60's)

No one was ever confused about whose daughter was who - and went I went to secondary school there was ONE other girl with the same name. We were in the same class too, for the whole of secondary school. No one ever confused us either. It's still MY name.

My nans are Valerie and Gina so I’m glad my mum didn’t use that naming method :/

Starlitestarbright · 22/01/2023 21:23

You basically copied twilight with the renesmee. It doesn't sound right to me but each to their own.

haha. Grandfathers for my kids are Alan and Edmond. So my son would have been Almond.

WhiteFire · 22/01/2023 21:24

True story this.

I was a little baby (well 9 months) when my Mum's neighbour had a baby, she came over to see my Mum and said that she was really sorry but she really liked my name and could she use it. My Mum was like 'of course'.

We were in the same year at school, we were ten a penny anyway.

ChickenDhansak82 · 22/01/2023 21:04

Did they know you'd made it up based on two grandma names?!?! If they knew that and still used it then that's just creepy!

I'd be rather annoyed and perhaps would send them a congratulations message but just say you are a little baffled that they used a name that you made up based on your daughters two grandmothers and perhaps it is pure coincide that their daughter also has grandmothers called X and Y!

Absolutely this.

DMLady · 22/01/2023 21:26

I can understand why you’d be annoyed, OP. Perhaps next time you see them (preferably in front of lots of your mutual friends!), you can explain where you got the name from, and ask in a loud voice where they got THEIR inspiration from…?

BreatheAndFocus · 22/01/2023 21:26

YANBU. It’s such an obvious steal that I’d be pissed off too. Someone did something similar for one of my DC. He saw her as a baby and asked about her (extremely unusual) name. I thought he wa just being polite and nice, but a few weeks later his baby is born and gets the same name as mine.

When my DD started school, there was a child in the village with a name that I’d hardly ever heard and never met a child with. I was chatting to the mum and she told me ruefully that it wasn’t such an unusual name at all - because there were now two other younger children in the village with the same name. This is a village with a couple of hundred people in.

I think it’s pathetic and unimaginative to choose a name by pinching one that someone you know has used, especially if it’s a ‘special’ name that means something to the person who originally used it and nothing to you.

Oysterbabe · 22/01/2023 19:59

Yabu. You didn't invent the name.

Ah, but maybe they did? Oaken

MichelleScarn · 22/01/2023 19:58

Is it Balonz?

😆

junglistmassive · 22/01/2023 21:37

I bet it's not that uncommon, and if he's anything like me, it probably half went in and he forgot and later thought he'd come up with the name by himself.

Newmum110 · 22/01/2023 21:48

Unfortunately OP you didn't actually create the name yourself, it existed before you decided to combine the 2 names, maybe on a subconscious level you had actually heard it before. Nobody owns a name. I will be calling my baby a name that I can only find 2 other people in the world having & if 6 months down the line the neighbours decide to use it so be it!!!!

Renlea · 22/01/2023 20:45

Erm....cough cough. Check out my username!!

I'm not happy with you OP. You've used my name.

I'm relieved that she didn't use mine.
