To be angry over a name

Barbie46 · 22/01/2023 19:55

My baby is 6 months old and we named her a very uncommon name that was special to us. Recently we met an old friend of my husband's, they are still in the same circle but not close friends anymore. He asked us the usual questions about a new baby including her name. He and his partner had a baby in the last few days and called their baby our daughters name.
He did not mention anything about her name when we told them it and I am feeling irrationally angry that they have used our daughters name.

OP I think you'll need to put an H on the end because people will always pronounce in Renlee rather than Renlee-a

notnownorma · 22/01/2023 21:04

Barbie46 · 22/01/2023 20:20

Her name is Renlea after her two grandmothers. Half of each name.

OK then. There's always deed poll.

siroodlesofnoodles · 22/01/2023 21:05

Poor children.

There are so many beautiful names in the world to choose from and Renlea isn't one of them.

Reanne would have been marginally better.

DarkShade · 22/01/2023 21:06

IMAGINE if it turns out your friends' dads are called Renato and Leo...

mydogsteppedonabee · 22/01/2023 21:07

Yabu
You don't own the name
They've as much right to call their child it as you do

Jenasaurus · 22/01/2023 21:07

Just been working out what my 3 would be called.

DS 1 - So combo of Oliver and Fred = Olifred
DS 2 - Comb of Robert and John = robjoh
DD 1 - Combo of Amy and Nellie = Amynel

Quite like Olifred. almost sounds like a real name

Now my own DC have to name their first born Jenrow if a girl or Davhar if a boy

Oysterbabe · 22/01/2023 21:08

Can't decide whether to call my next kid Pauny or Jenline.

DorisParchment · 22/01/2023 21:08

I was going to ask if it was pronounced Ren-Lee (like Kenleeeeee), but I see it’s Ren-Leah. In which case I think it needs an H.

lifeinthehills · 22/01/2023 21:09

I know Leah who is constantly called Lee. I'm not sure the h helps.

My grandparent's bungalow was called "Olfre" after their names Olive and Fred

lifeinthehills · 22/01/2023 21:10

It's fine if the names work and come together well. I was just playing with my parent and PIL's names and one of my sons would literally be the name of a nut.

Ofred could work. Oh dear.

Is it Balonz?

👏👏👏👏

BarryKentPoet · 22/01/2023 21:11

Weirdly, mashing my mum and MIL names just makes them their own names still!

(Joyce and Grace)

Calphurnia88 · 22/01/2023 21:11

I was ready to think YABU because you'd chosen a name you thought was unique but is actually really popular (e.g. Ophelia) but the fact its a made up combination of your grandparents names does make this pretty weird.

I would find this odd 😕

Mumuser124 · 22/01/2023 21:12

I normally never comment on threads like this as I feel nobody has the right to a name but then I saw she was called ‘Renlea’.

They have definitely copied and it’s quite embarrassing actually. I’m not sure I’d be speaking to them again as it’s very odd that they have used you particular unusual name.

bowlingalleyblues · 22/01/2023 21:12

When people ask ‘why did you pick the name’ all they can say is ‘I just liked it copied it off someone else because I have no imagination or soul’ but you’ll be able to tell your child about all the special meaning behind the name.

Mumuser124 · 22/01/2023 21:12

It is sort of a bit disrespectful.

Judgyjudgy · 22/01/2023 21:12

Barbie46 · 22/01/2023 20:06

I know I can not "own" a name but we live in a small town, anyone who has ever asked her name has always responded with oh I've never heard that before or the likes. Maybe I am being unreasonable, probably because my baby is only 6 months old and someone else is already using the name.

OK well that makes more sense. Unfortunately not much you can do, do I'd just try and take it as a compliment

mozzachester · 22/01/2023 21:13

Oh lord, I was thinking please don't let it be Renesmee!

LemonSwan · 22/01/2023 21:13

Gosh pretty embarrassing for them! Cringe 😬

NoImRenlea · 22/01/2023 21:13

Renlea · 22/01/2023 20:45

Erm....cough cough. Check out my username!!

I'm not happy with you OP. You've used my name.

Ummmm well this is awkward…..

IAmAlreadyRegrettingMyGreyColourScheme · 22/01/2023 21:14

Oh no! You have every right to be miffed considering its such an unusual name youve thought up with special meaning for your daughter. You may need to put a bit of thought into this and make sure they're in different schools to each other or you'll be constantly reminded.
I'd avoid them like the plague moving forward. They sound very odd.

lifeinthehills · 22/01/2023 21:14

In the context of where the name Renlea came from, it's a bit of a weird copy. I generally do agree with no-one owns a name, but that is a little weird still.

However, names come from somewhere and maybe you've just invented a name that will spread further, OP?
