To be angry over a name

Barbie46 · 22/01/2023 19:55

My baby is 6 months old and we named her a very uncommon name that was special to us. Recently we met an old friend of my husband's, they are still in the same circle but not close friends anymore. He asked us the usual questions about a new baby including her name. He and his partner had a baby in the last few days and called their baby our daughters name.
He did not mention anything about her name when we told them it and I am feeling irrationally angry that they have used our daughters name.

Tbf we named our firstborn after both our grandmothers.

Grannanny is 24 now, never met another in any of his classes at school, college or Uni.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/01/2023 22:44

My Grandads were called Bogdan and Rollo.

I always felt sorry for the actress Malandra Burrows. She was named after her dad, Malcolm, and her mum, Sandra. I

In your case, they clearly liked it so much they named their own baby after yours. That’s kind of cute.

If that was me, I’d be Lyngary, or knickers.

mathanxiety · 22/01/2023 22:47

It could be an old Surrey name?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/01/2023 22:48

Was Gary his full name? You aren't allowed to use the full name - only part of it, so surely you'd be Lyngar.

Then, when your parents announced your name to everybody after you were born, they'd all be responding (in their best Irish accents) "Did you have to, did you have to, did you have to?!"

Theunamedcat · 22/01/2023 22:49

We had this I was irrationally pissed we named our son after two grandfathers dh stepbrother used the same names just reversed them then I realised stepdads golden boy named his son after his father's wife's first father in law and a man he had never met soooo fucking stupid 🙄 they arnt even rare names just family names 😂 not his family though

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/01/2023 22:50

Astonishing how many men of grandfather age there are in Surrey called Balthazar and Onzlow.

Permanent ear worm.

I would be Rutene (Ruth and Irene), which has got quite a nice ring too it.

OnLockdown · 22/01/2023 22:53

Oops, nice ring to it.

Ncgirlseriously · 22/01/2023 22:58

I’d just laugh it off and say clearly you’ve started a trend. My kid has a quite common name though, so I’m not fussed about that sort of thing.

Though it’s an interesting game to play to see what name your kid would have if you mashed together your grandmothers names, it would have been Hara or Vezal for us, neither of which is particularly catchy!

Mari9999 · 22/01/2023 23:02

I think that you are being a bit absurd about the name. You do not own a name. There are few names that are so unique that no one else has that name.

Do you think that they should have asked your permission to use something that did not actually belong to you?

How exactly do you think that this is going to in anyway impact your daughter?

Much ado about very little!

Jellybean23 · 22/01/2023 23:12

Unusual names and street parking spaces - no one owns them. Your baby is no less wonderful because someone else has the name.

Nanof8 · 22/01/2023 23:29

It's not as unique as you may think. Unusual, yes, but used before.

It is a lovely name and I like the way you came up with the name.

ArmyofMunn · 22/01/2023 23:32

OP I think posters are being ridiculously 'objective' about this, and I can guarantee almost each and every one would be furious if they'd named their child after two grandparents, so a really unique name, only for some friends to grab it for their new baby.

YADNBU!!

I think I could certainly get used to that after a little while.

Bonjovispyjamas · 22/01/2023 23:39

I'm surprised anyone would want to steal that, sorry but it's a horrible name.

TheBigWangTheory · 22/01/2023 23:45

Reugny · 22/01/2023 20:39

It is a name.

It is US in origin. It means beautiful, powerful, kind heart.

No it bloody doesn't. Just because the first result on google says it is doesn;t make it true, especially when that result is an american site full of completely made up names and bullshit meanings for real names. Try some actual thinking!

OP, you "made up" a terrible name for your kid and someone else used it. You should both be embarrassed.

My advice to expectant mothers is to name your child Gearoidin, after me. You can bet your bottom dollar nobody's going to 'steal' THAT! Christ, nobody can even pronounce it!

You forgot the fada 😂

JudgeRudy · 23/01/2023 00:05

Pretty much all parents chose a baby name that is special to them. If uniqueness was your primary goal there are many names you could have selected or even invented that others are unlikely to copy. When you hear a name you hadntvthoughtbof sometimes you like it so much you copy it......a bit like you did....assuming of course you didnt make it up! Get over it.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/01/2023 00:16

It is interesting how few cited name meanings happen to be negative, isn't it? Even on sites that claim to have 'every' baby name there is and not just 'here are 10 lovely names for ur ickle bubs'.

Just about every name you've never heard of seems to mean 'majestic warrior of the snow-capped mountains' or 'beautiful dewdrops blessing the serene morning savanna'. You never seem to see any that give the meaning as 'fat arsed and big-nosed with dandruff' or 'creepy pervert in the park'. Law of averages: there must be some negative ones!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/01/2023 00:18

Now I can't get The Flying Pickets out of my head, singing "Fada-dada, fada-dada, fada-dada, fada-dada.... all I needed was the love you gave...." Grin
