To think the misogyny directed at Madonna is grim

Obviously Piers Morgan is a monumental arse but his attitude is typical of the misogynistic abuse directed at Madonna. She’s doing a world tour of her 40 years of greatest hits. Mick Jagger, Elton John etc are all also still touring into their 70’s and 80’s and that’s fine as they are ‘legends’ but Madonna, arguably one of greatest female artists ever is tragic and gets loads of abuse for how she dresses, what she wears, how much Botox she has, etc etc.

Total and utter misogyny.

Welp I now have some sad and unsavoury mental imagery of Simon Cowell to try and forget, thanks for that lol

Ha! Don’t have nightmares 😉

Might quickly watch the exorcist before I go to sleep in the hopes I will dream about that instead. Except what if they combine?

Crap now I can never sleep again.

For me, the point is that women should be able to look exactly as they want to look, at any age, and behave as they want to behave (usual provisos here obv) at any age.

It's not actually about being Madonna. It's about the fact that I don't want anyone telling me how I 'should' look - who does? Why would I find that any more acceptable at 65?

If we decide that Madonna should 'put it away' then the same goes for other women who might commit the crime of not looking 'right.' If it's okay to do that to one woman, it's okay to do that to all women.

Madonna is not my bag. Her choices wouldn't be mine. But I defend her right to make her choices, as I would any other woman.

Bunty1958 · 18/01/2023 21:13

OMG I'm a 1958 born girl too.
If Madonna was still just wanting to shock to show older women can be sexy then good on her.
Sadly I think she's lost her way. Come on M accept your age no more plastic surgery and honestly who wants to look at a 64 year old gyrating bum!

Agree, Bunty! I feel she’s let down women of her own age group by resorting to ridiculous amounts of surgery and filters to (try to) look like a young woman. If she wasn’t trying to deny her age and instead was flying the flag for sexy, unconventional, 60 year olds (OK with a bit of a nip and tuck) I’d respect her so much more - now that would be WAY more daring and provocative on her part in my opinion!

Ottil · 19/01/2023 02:56

In a world that's fucking saturated with adoration of youth, invisibility of older women and knee deep in misogynistic, ageist bullshit, let's blame a woman for not wearing her wrinkles with pride, eh?

AngeloMysterioso · 19/01/2023 02:58

Honestly?

She hasn’t put out a good album in about 20 years
Her voice - which wasn’t great to begin with- is now dreadfully weak and reedy
Watching her try to dance the way she did in her twenties is awkward
Watching her try to dance the way she did in her twenties with men currently in their twenties is even more awkward
Watching her resort to more and more desperate levels of self-objectification in order to get headlines because her music isn’t good enough to sell itself anymore is kind of sad

It’s all a bit tragic and gross. And if Mick Jagger and Elton John were trying to push ticket sales by gyrating around in their underwear with people less than half their age I would find that tragic and gross too.

On the other hand, I’ve seen Kylie and Dolly Parton in the not too distant past and while their voices are also past their best, they were still absolutely fantastic. They aren’t trying to overcompensate for aging by… being tragic and gross.

Do what makes you happy I say. I think she looks terrible since the surgery but it’s her money and her choice. People don’t have to watch her in Concert if they don’t like it.

Liorae · 19/01/2023 03:09

Madonna knows pictures of herself in twinsets and pearls are not going to get the column inches, media commentary and social media traction she will need to help shift tickets.
I don't think these pictures will help her shift tickets.

She's about to fill stadiums all over the world with people paying crazy prices for tickets. Your comments about the way she looks are hideous and reductive.

Comments like this sound so hateful of women. Be less, be smaller, shut up, pipe down, cover yourself, stop speaking, stop singing, don't show yourself.

Horrible.

Chibbers · 19/01/2023 03:21

@Ottil do you know, there are plenty of women both older and younger than Madonna who I have nothing but respect and admiration for, who never felt the need to flash their bits to get on.
People with talent, class and intelligence, the three things that Madonna lacks.

When you take down one woman, for being a pensioners only talent these days relies on flashing her saggy tits and arse, it harms all women.

If I want to be free to look the way I want - without being the subject of hideous abuse for it - then I must also want that for all other women.

This thread is fucking horrible.

MysteryBelle · 19/01/2023 03:43

The only way Madonna could shock anybody at this point is to become a cloistered nun and never be heard from again.

StalkedByASpider · 19/01/2023 04:02

I used to think there was a shit load of misogynistic comments aimed at Madonna. This was a few years ago when she was in that video with Justin Timberlake and wearing a leotard.

Lots of "eeew, put it away, old women grinding is disgusssssting" type comments. In contrast, no one was saying the same about Tom Jones still doing his hip thrusts.

So I do think there's a societal misogyny which means that an older woman mustn't look sexy, dance provocatively or wear revealing clothing.

But.... I think Madonna's recent behaviour is pretty pathetic. And her appearance is god-awful. Her body, her choice. I defend her right to do what she wants. My frustration isn't because she's an older woman who wants to flash her body. It's because she is acting in the same attention-seeking way that you see from Love Island wannabes, or social influencers thirsty for attention. I'm not a fan of any of that, plus the cosmetic changes to her face and the filters she uses are just fucking awful.

Her body, her choices. Absolutely. But it's not misogynistic to say she looks an absolute state now. It's not misogynistic to say that her attention-seeking social media posts make you want to eye-roll.

Re getting her body out and explicit photos....well, that's Madonna. It's nothing new. That's what she does. She always has done, and it's nothing shocking to those of us who are old enough to remember her arrival on the scene and to watch her evolution. Don't really care whether she wants to flash her tits or not. Up to her.

I am disappointed in her tbh. She's always been such an icon of female empowerment that it's really depressing watching her cave to societal demands to look a certain way. What she's done to herself and the dreadful filtered photos....I honestly thought she'd be sticking two fingers up to the patriarchy instead of actually conforming to become the very thing she's always been opposed to.

Once again, her body, her face, her choice.

But the extreme nature of her cosmetic changes means she's open to ridicule. And I don't see any misogyny in that. Simon Cowell has been all over the papers recently because his face looks weird too. It's the same thing.

Letshaveablackcelebration2022 · 19/01/2023 05:30

To everyone comparing Madonna to Dolly. Kylie, Cher, Stevie Nicks to somehow say that they haven’t attempted to stay looking young- ALL of the above have had bucket loads of surgery and Botox to stay looking young!!

Jesus, the absolute state of some of the comments on here too. So fucking what if she wants to get her tits out on stage or flash her bottom. Who says she can’t?

I guess she can, but do you not think Elton John would also attract ridicule if he flashed his bottom on stage?

Letshaveablackcelebration2022 · 19/01/2023 05:54

@Aprilx but she hasn’t actually ‘flashed her arse’ on stage in a flasher kind of way. She wears leotards and often tights and is a performer and a dancer. Even the infamous orgasm on a bed scene in the 1991 show that I mentioned in an earlier post, she was wearing a costume.

Saying that Madonna "gives zero fucks" is a Gotdamn lie. So many fucks she gives and has to he seen as "not like THOSE old people", she is quite prepared to throw her legacy out of the window for clicks and giggles.
And as for misogyny? Madonna exemplifies "white feminism" and in fact, her persona is reminiscent of a dirty old man who pays for the flesh of "the young".

She isn't sexy; a sense of humour is required for that, seeing as sex is something that can go wrong so quick...but Madonna strikes me as somebody who always has to have control, without losing any. Hence her cosplaying as an indolent twenty year old with too much money and nothing to do. These are all acts of dominance, not confidence. She has never liked women, really. Always having to be seen as the Cool Hag, preaching to the younger female entertainers that they can only do what they do because of her and that when she did it, she was slaughtered. How convenient for a non original, barely talented magpie who has a problematic relationship with Blackness to forget the Black "outre" performers who came before her and were far more talented than her...because they had to be for both them to have any chance in the industry and for the then connoisseur Black audience that most definitely existed until 1999, before mainstream larping and white validation took over in "Black Pop Culture".

And I refuse to think that people get obvious decade defining facial and body surgery and do not want to be looked at or commented on. Madonna's head looks twice the size that it used to even ten years ago because of all the poison she has had jooked into it. And one doesn't get a bad caricature of a Black woman's arse bolted onto them when they have an apple shape that never had as much as a curved bum before. He body when fit, was fire. But again, her lack of confidence had her out here buying a bum that doesn't fit her thighs.

Elton John has had to put up with more shade about his lack of hair, the hats he wore to hide it, the dinner lady after a shift in a steamy kitchen first few sets of hair plugs, his weight and since the 1970s when Madonna was still dancing in front of her bedroom mirror in Michigan.

Madonna's Misogynist Whisperer stans wish that Madonna, with a tenth of the talent of Elton John had to put up with a tenth of the slagging he got for his hair and "lifestyle" and for far longer that he has.
If Madonna sufferd from misogyny, her noncing on POC , far poorer Puerto Rican "young" back in the day and as told by her in the Sex book would be brought up far more often than hardly ever. If she was a man, that would be brought up as even David Bowie's underage "groupie" sad tales have been and he is loved far more than Madonna.
