I used to think there was a shit load of misogynistic comments aimed at Madonna. This was a few years ago when she was in that video with Justin Timberlake and wearing a leotard.
Lots of "eeew, put it away, old women grinding is disgusssssting" type comments. In contrast, no one was saying the same about Tom Jones still doing his hip thrusts.
So I do think there's a societal misogyny which means that an older woman mustn't look sexy, dance provocatively or wear revealing clothing.
But.... I think Madonna's recent behaviour is pretty pathetic. And her appearance is god-awful. Her body, her choice. I defend her right to do what she wants. My frustration isn't because she's an older woman who wants to flash her body. It's because she is acting in the same attention-seeking way that you see from Love Island wannabes, or social influencers thirsty for attention. I'm not a fan of any of that, plus the cosmetic changes to her face and the filters she uses are just fucking awful.
Her body, her choices. Absolutely. But it's not misogynistic to say she looks an absolute state now. It's not misogynistic to say that her attention-seeking social media posts make you want to eye-roll.
Re getting her body out and explicit photos....well, that's Madonna. It's nothing new. That's what she does. She always has done, and it's nothing shocking to those of us who are old enough to remember her arrival on the scene and to watch her evolution. Don't really care whether she wants to flash her tits or not. Up to her.
I am disappointed in her tbh. She's always been such an icon of female empowerment that it's really depressing watching her cave to societal demands to look a certain way. What she's done to herself and the dreadful filtered photos....I honestly thought she'd be sticking two fingers up to the patriarchy instead of actually conforming to become the very thing she's always been opposed to.
Once again, her body, her face, her choice.
But the extreme nature of her cosmetic changes means she's open to ridicule. And I don't see any misogyny in that. Simon Cowell has been all over the papers recently because his face looks weird too. It's the same thing.
