NC as I know my MIL is on here!

BIL is getting married in the summer. A little while away, I know, but I have a household full of teenage girls who are obsessing excitedly about what to wear.

Showed one of the dresses my 21yo DD said she liked for the wedding, and MIL said it was far too dressy, and next to the rest of us (who don't even know what we're wearing yet) she will stand out like a sore thumb.

I didn't really know what to say to that as I thought a wedding was about as dressy as you get!

I have been to a few weddings but my DDs haven't been to any since they were small so they don't have a comparison and I can't say I can remember what girls of that age wore at previous ones Ive been to!

I'll attach pictures of dresses similar to what she liked. She doesn't want anything particularly clingy as she is a bit weight conscious (probably due to comments from MIL)

If you saw a young girl wearing a dress similar to these at a wedding would you think she was too dressed up? And if so, what would you expect someone of that age to be dressed in?

@Princesspollyyy That's really nice - I like that.

honda1114 · 18/01/2023 18:47

@MysteryBelle

No one should dress for anyone other than themselves. You are not dressing for the bride and groom when you go to their wedding. And there is nothing wrong with wanting to look nice and confident in what you're wearing.
It's a wedding - there will be loads of pictures. Why should you wear something to please someone else and not because you actually like it? And have the constant reminder in those pictures?

I bet your wedding would be fun.

I'm not sure that I'd be the person to go to @MysteryBelle wedding, I'd probably decline.

I mean the original beautiful dresses are perfect for opps up side your head and that's what's important!

But there are conventions about appropriate attire for guests at various types of social events. Insisting that they don't exist is pointless.

But does the wedding have a dress code?

If you are invited to and attend a wedding, it’s not about you. It’s not about your need to ‘feel sexy’. It’s about your support for the two people getting married. In a sense, you’re dressing for them. Appropriately. Just as you wouldn’t come to a wedding in ripped jeans and dirty sneakers, unless that were the dress code, similarly you wouldn’t come wearing an evening dress that in itself is not appropriate for a daytime wedding and then cut low in front with a giant slit up to the crotch. I’m sorry, how can you not understand that? It is having respect for yourself, the people, and the situation by realizing it’s not about you. It’s the couple’s day, not yours. This is basic good manners because it is based on courtesy for others.

Totally this. You can still look nice and stylish. There's a different between stylish and skanky. Spoiler alert, very low cleavage and slit right up your leg at a daytime family wedding isn't it. Keep it classy, it's a wedding afterall. Are people really this clueless 😐

littlelilypad · 18/01/2023 19:29

What about a silky slip dress, heels and a cardigan for your daughter, OP? These are all lovely:

Otherwise, maybe take a look at Rixo? Though that's a bit more expensive. There are lots of dresses to rent on the platform HURR (Rixo is one there, as well as Ghost), and if you order something that doesn't fit, you can get a refund.

Good luck in finding something; it's great that she's excited about getting dressed up!

Does it matter? Do people really need "a dress code" to understand that a slinky, skimpy and revealing frock would look absurd at an average daytime wedding?

Exactly! And there’s a difference between stylish and fashion - a lot of posters seem to be confusing the two - they are not always the same!

Satin is not traditionally a daywear fabric.

Sorry I think you've not understood the assignment. The OP was asking about wedding outfits for the daytime, not nighties to wear to bed afterwards.

Sorry this is a baby doll nighty, you're very confused!

She might like something like these as a compromise?

These are lovely, stylish and classy 👌
Remember it's not a Love Island wedding!

Yes that's a 'babydoll' nightie, I didn't say that I just said 'nightie'.

Sorry, I was just offering a suggestion based on other 20-year-olds I know, not a definitive answer. As an aside, someone in your household is very lucky if you're wearing something similar to bed; my DH is lucky if my pj's match 😄

youshouldnthaveasked · 18/01/2023 20:04

Have a look at Girl in Mind or Lipsy for a wedding.

Would she like either of these styles?
