I am exactly as my username says, so I just need some reassurance that I’m worrying for no reason at all and it will be fine!

I had to buy a wire for my i phone charger today, and also a plug- I told them it was an iphone 13 and showed it to them, and they said it needed a usb c cable. I said I thought it was the B but they said that only refers to the fitting for the plug, and the plug they were selling me was for a C. So they went and got me the C and I bought it and I went home and surprise surprise it doesn’t fit my phone.

I’m kicking myself now because my guy instinct said he was wrong but he was so insistent and was talking over me each time I was trying to explain it- it’s a big high street brand so I stupidly trusted him and bought that one.

obviously I’ll take it back tomorrow but I’m just a bit worried they deny it or say they can’t swap it because I’ve opened the packaging and unwrapped the wire (I had to to try and fit it in my phone) but I’ve put it back in the box and wrapped it as best as I could, it was £35 so I’m just a bit worried they won’t swap it or take it back because obviously it’s a lot of money. Like I said in my username, I’m a stresser and have bad anxiety so I’m a bit worried about it tonight!

has anyone got any knowledge about this?! Absolutely kicking myself!

Yes sorry, I didn't mention that but yes it's ridiculous that the other devices are c to c but the phones aren't

Before too long, both Lightning and USB A will be history, with everything becoming USB C; but we're currently in the changeover period - which could last for quite some time as people obviously keep devices sometimes for a number of years.

This thread is hilariously confusing.

I'm so glad you says that. The more I read, the less I understand 😂

I think the simplest solution is just bin the iPhone and get an android then you can still use the cable. Don't forget to take the cable with you to the shop to try it with the new phone then and there incase the same tit tells you it fits the wrong phone and sells you another iPhone.

LifeIsJustOneBigWTAF · 17/01/2023 00:02

Honestly, please don't worry OP. Yes, it's annoying that some eejit talked over you, and you're a bit cross with yourself for not standing your ground. We've all been there (well, I have!) The simple fact is that you were sold the wrong product and didn't realise until you tried to use it. Just keep calm, smile and breathe. Tesco will refund or exchange. It'll all be fine x

SmartHome · 17/01/2023 00:06

The plug is fine you just need a different cable. That cable is usb c to go into the plug and then also usb c at the device end - which would be done for modern android phones, Nintendo switch, modern laptops etc. Apple just insist on using the non standar lightning port on their iPhones so you just need to swap the usbc-usbc cable for a usbc-lightning cable.

MmaPreciousRamotswe · 17/01/2023 00:07

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 16/01/2023 23:28

iPhones don't have a usb c port, they (famously) have Apple's own proprietary Lightning port.

Haven't they recently changed the law, though, so that Apple is forced to scrap their proprietary Lightning port and fit their phones with the C port instead - something about competition law? Although I don't know when they did/will come into effect - and it may even have been an EU ruling, so possibly different now for the UK?!

Ironically, I understand this was intended to avoid confusion; whereas before, it was much simpler for Apple users, as everybody knew that Apple = Lightning port.

The product - although very expensive (and a 2m cable isn't really that long, as cables go) - could still be useful for you, OP, if you use cables for other applications e.g. connecting peripherals to a computer. Keep the plug, get a replacement USB C to Lightning cable to replace the existing one, and then use the existing cable to connect an external drive/DVD player/whatever to your computer (if you have one).

Yes indeed, New EU regulations are in place to ensure a standard charging port across brands and devices. It comes into effect in 2024. I can't imagine any manufacturer making a different product for the UK although possibly we'll get old stock.

In 'Apple land' C to C is also iPad.

Apple like to keep it nice and simple as this thread demonstrates 😂

My iPad uses exactly the same as my iPhone - lightening.
I have a lightening to USB-A cable and a lightening to USB-C cable

My old iPhone didn't have lightening, but my newer one does.

SmartHome · 17/01/2023 00:08

Yeah keep the cable it will.come.in useful. Just order a USBC - lightning one as well off Amazon.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 17/01/2023 00:14

To add to the confusion, the latest protocol used with USB C is known as 'thunderbolt', to sit alongside the proprietary Apple connection.

Very very frightening.

Scepticalwotsits · 17/01/2023 00:15

DixonD · 16/01/2023 23:12

That would not be a genuine Apple iPhone charger. I only buy Apple accessories for my phone.

After market products are absolutely fine. Yea going for a cheap unknown brand of Amazon is a risk but I’ve used Belkin and Juice wires perfectly fine, if anything the braided belkin ones were better as they were more resilient being braided whereas the official apply ones frayed at the usb end from repeated use.

apples who schtick is to overcharge for ancillaries. That 2m cable OP wants is £35 juice do a 2n one for £9.99

and that’s from a bricks and mortar shop not Amazon

@stresser I actually think the shop guy gave you the wrong product. I just checked the Apple website and the USB C (to USB C) cable you have is £19 for the 2 metre one. The correct cable that you wanted to buy (USB C to lightning - 2 metre) is £35 as you say but that's not what you were given!

So, if you were definitely charged £35, you were either overcharged or more likely, they charged for the lightning cable but gave you the USB C one by mistake.

@stresser i think you may have missed this, but I think @HundredMilesAnHour is bang on the money here.

looks like the sales assistant sold you the right item, but when you’ve given them the card at the till to buy it they’ve given you the wrong item, so you’ve been overcharged

Depends on the year of the iPad. My iPad Pro 2020 has USB-C as do the new 2022 Airs (and I’d imagine all models in between)

TwoShades1 · 17/01/2023 00:35

Basically the cable needs 2 different ends. One with a lightning connection which fits into the phone. And the other end a usb that’s suits whatever plug you have for the wall. (In this case they have sold you a usb c plug). So the cable will have a lightning connection on one end and a usb c on the other. If both ends are the same then it’s not the correct cable.

No need to be so mean. Are you saying you’ve never made a mistake your entire life?!

PinkButtercups · 17/01/2023 00:47

I got a king charger cable from home bargains for £1.99 for my iPhone 11 for when I was in hospital giving birth. Don't be fooled by the branded ones. The unbranded ones work just as well! If you get your money back just go get a complete different wire and save your money.

PinkButtercups · 17/01/2023 00:47

Long not king*

Clarefromwork · 17/01/2023 00:48

I’m sure they will swop it!

You can always message Tesco through their twitter page first to check you can return, I have done this a few times and then I’m ready to refer to the chat if they say no in the store ! (Sometimes you can get a jobsworth in the stores!)

Also don’t feel bad about spending £35 on it, I have probably spent more on the cheap Amazon ones that keep breaking after a few months !

My non branded ones have lasted longer than any apple wires I’ve had.

braided ones have been the best ones so far.

LemonSwan · 17/01/2023 01:09

I have bought many a lightening to USB C.

And I also have a thing for longer lengths.

I can attest that it is day light robbery but the apple ones are the longest lasting.

Cheap ones in long length have ranged from 1 week before death to at max a few months.

Thankfully apple are reliable enough to fail just before the 12 month warranty. Buy from somewhere reputable like John Lewis or Apple themselves and they will swap it when it breaks if you have the receipt.

IwtHs · 17/01/2023 01:16

All iPhones use the same cable don't they? ( from iPhone 5 upwards) One end is the lightening thingy and the other a usb. The usb then either goes into the charging plug or directly into a usb port.

As a retail worker, I have to follow store and company policy. If I don't I run the risk of being sacked. If you've already spoken with head office and have a reference number/proof of your claim I can apply to the return then I will happily override the company policy but if not then I'm not risking my job because you don't like the answer you get when you try to return something ineligible, as per policy. (I actually had a colleague who was sacked last year for overriding company policy as it counted as gross misconduct so I'm not taking any risks)

Head Office has far more flexibility with the policies than I do as they are far higher on the totem pole and so get to make decisions regarding when and where to bend the rules. I (and other retail staff) are not being jobsworths when we follow company policy by refusing a return 🙄

OP, I work in a supermarket (not Tesco though) and as long as someone has a receipt, the item and the packaging we would exchange a phone cable, no questions asked. It would only be if there was no receipt where there would be an issue as we require them for electrical returns, but as it was only yesterday when you bought it we would be able to look it up on our transaction record to find the details needed for a return.

Wetblanket78 · 17/01/2023 01:26

Yes they are but they aren't official apple products. You might as well buy one from Poundland. I see post's all the time on social media saying don't buy a cheap charger and a picture of a blown socket charred wire and sometimes a burnt phone. I've never seen one say it was an official apple charger. We've had a lot for phoni iPads and iPods. You get what you pay for. Never have I had one burn out on me.
