Annoyed at myself- shop incident

I am exactly as my username says, so I just need some reassurance that I’m worrying for no reason at all and it will be fine!

I had to buy a wire for my i phone charger today, and also a plug- I told them it was an iphone 13 and showed it to them, and they said it needed a usb c cable. I said I thought it was the B but they said that only refers to the fitting for the plug, and the plug they were selling me was for a C. So they went and got me the C and I bought it and I went home and surprise surprise it doesn’t fit my phone.

I’m kicking myself now because my guy instinct said he was wrong but he was so insistent and was talking over me each time I was trying to explain it- it’s a big high street brand so I stupidly trusted him and bought that one.

obviously I’ll take it back tomorrow but I’m just a bit worried they deny it or say they can’t swap it because I’ve opened the packaging and unwrapped the wire (I had to to try and fit it in my phone) but I’ve put it back in the box and wrapped it as best as I could, it was £35 so I’m just a bit worried they won’t swap it or take it back because obviously it’s a lot of money. Like I said in my username, I’m a stresser and have bad anxiety so I’m a bit worried about it tonight!

has anyone got any knowledge about this?! Absolutely kicking myself!

Don’t worry. If they won’t take it back you can get a converter/adapter on Amazon to make it fit.

StoneofDestiny · 18/01/2023 21:26

Be polite, stay pleasant .... you purchased that one on their advice ..... their mistake, not yours. Don't leave unless they exchange, if necessary take contact details of head office, and a name, because you WILL take it further. Honestly, I wouldn't give it another moments thought. Go in expecting an exchange, be confident - I would be be!

best advice

I wouldn't buy a cheap, fake charger. There are so many instances of them catching fire.

Also usually they stop working after a while and you end up spending more having to buy multiple ones.

Laurie000 · 18/01/2023 21:51

Is it the USB part that doesn’t fit into the plug? When I got my new phone the lead didn’t have a standard USB fitting so I bought a little adaptor for it off Amazon. Plugged the cable into that and the adaptor into the plug.

Kjpt140v · 18/01/2023 22:20

Yes they will take it back, no problems.

Yes they will take it back, no problems.

They have already exchanged it for her
Do people not read the OP updates?

FootieMama · 18/01/2023 22:48

OP just think it's worth for you to remember the correct names when you go to the store. It is USB cable not wire and the bit that goes on the wall is the phone charger. You chose everything correctly and was just unlucky to have someone convincing that you were wrong. Believe in yourself😉

Ignore the PP’s telling it’s the right one, it is not.
even the iPhone 14 uses a lightening connection, this is the end that goes into your phone. The other end that goes into the plug can be either usb b or usb c and as you were buying a new plug that didn’t matter. the sales person should have known better as not one iPhone has a usb c charging port, only some iPads do.
to be honest, unless you have any real
reason to I wouldn’t bother with Apple products and I’d pay about £8 for 2m or more lightening cable from Amazon.

Yes they are all lightning connections, but being the cheapskate I am 😀I have been using USB-C to lightning cables purchased from Tesco and amazon (even dealz) and when my daughter finally got her iphone with an apple charger and an apple USB-C 2m lightning cable , I noticed her phone was charging 4/5 times as fast as mine. So there is a major difference. Mainly in the charger but also in the cable. Not all cables are the same. Also the USB-C to USB-C charger for my macbook is used to charge every device in the house that is USB-C (samsung tablets for example) instead of the samsung charger and cable they come with because it simply knocks the charging times out of the water. Sometimes you do pay more but it is a better product. (I don't work for apple 😂)

Iseestupidpeople · 19/01/2023 00:07

iPhone 13 would be a c to lightning cable. But if she uses an older plug it would be the standard USB to lightning cable. The phone model has no inkling on the plug connection as they are interchangeable from the older to the new ones. And with the newer ones you have to buy them separately so she probably uses the older plug.

if in doubt next time take both phone and plug to ensure you get the right one.

Sorry if I’m being stupid but I don’t quite follow- I’ve tried both ends of the wire and neither fit my phone but both ends fit the plug itself

If both ends fit the plug then you have a USB C to USB C cable. What you need is a Lightning to USB C cable. Hard to believe the guy in the shop didn’t know this. Anyone selling computer or phone peripherals knows that iPhones need a lightning connector at the phone end, whatever USB end (A or C) is at the other.

RedRiverShore3 · 19/01/2023 05:39

The very cheap cables are often false economy, cheap plugs can be dangerous, Anker and Belkin are a good alternative to Apple, Anker are sometimes on offer on Amazon,

Devora13 · 19/01/2023 08:42

Look up Money Saving Expert and your consumer rights. You are entitled to a full refund as you were sold an item that wasn't fit for purpose. What sort of shop did you buy it from? If a chain store you would go directly to customer services, if a small store I would go directly to the owner.

MotherOfHouseplants · 19/01/2023 08:46

She took it back on Tuesday and got an exchange for the correct cable, no quibble.

We really need pinned update posts.

She’s exchanged it. The matter was resolved two days ago.

You had your phone with you you but still got the wrong chargerr 😂

The charger is swathed in plastic, how was OP supposed to test it worked?

Kjpt140v · 19/01/2023 14:59

Actually, time is short for busy people. UY

Stewball01 · 26/01/2023 12:54

I hope you do have the receipt. You must speak to the manager and tell him how this person treated you and told you the wrong information. Put the blame solidly where it belongs. 😏
