I am exactly as my username says, so I just need some reassurance that I’m worrying for no reason at all and it will be fine!

I had to buy a wire for my i phone charger today, and also a plug- I told them it was an iphone 13 and showed it to them, and they said it needed a usb c cable. I said I thought it was the B but they said that only refers to the fitting for the plug, and the plug they were selling me was for a C. So they went and got me the C and I bought it and I went home and surprise surprise it doesn’t fit my phone.

I’m kicking myself now because my guy instinct said he was wrong but he was so insistent and was talking over me each time I was trying to explain it- it’s a big high street brand so I stupidly trusted him and bought that one.

obviously I’ll take it back tomorrow but I’m just a bit worried they deny it or say they can’t swap it because I’ve opened the packaging and unwrapped the wire (I had to to try and fit it in my phone) but I’ve put it back in the box and wrapped it as best as I could, it was £35 so I’m just a bit worried they won’t swap it or take it back because obviously it’s a lot of money. Like I said in my username, I’m a stresser and have bad anxiety so I’m a bit worried about it tonight!

has anyone got any knowledge about this?! Absolutely kicking myself!

Tesco are normally really good, I'm sure they'll swap it.

WheelOfFish · 16/01/2023 23:02

Not really. She has a plug with a usb c socket and a phone with a lightning socket, so now she just needs a cable to connect them.

PugInTheHouse · 16/01/2023 23:01

You're not being stupid, it's the wrong cable.

Why do you think it’s the wrong cable? USB-C is very commonly used with iPhones now.

bumpytrumpy · 16/01/2023 23:02

You need a one with:

1 end lightening port (to go in the phone)

1 end USB C (to go in the plug you have bought, which then goes in the wall).

RoseslnTheHospital · 16/01/2023 23:03

@ItWasDobbinAtTheMareAndSpare iPhones don't have a usb c port, they (famously) have Apple's own proprietary Lightning port.

dementedpixie · 16/01/2023 23:03

ItWasDobbinAtTheMareAndSpare · 16/01/2023 22:57

It’s the other end that’s confusing you. It is the right charger for your phone but you would need a different charger block (the ‘plug’ part) to fit into your wall. This type are faster but if you don’t want to buy the new block then you’d need to buy the other charger.

It's not right as the USB c will not fit in the phones charging port. It needs a lightning cable at that end and then USB c to fit into the charging block

Not at the iPhone end it isn’t.

Why do you think it’s the wrong cable? USB-C is very commonly used with iPhones now.

Because the bit that fits in the phone needs to be a lightning cable, usb-c to lightning

😂 OP are you my Nan? We’ve been having this exact debate for weeks on end now regarding cables, plugs etc. and what’s the right ones

Im sure they will swap it for you, try not to worry x

Because it doesn’t fit her phone! I have an iPhone 12 and it needs, as MANY people have already said - a lightning to USB/USBC if she has a power charger plug.

Because iPhone 12 needs a lightning cable

Sorry if I’m being stupid but I don’t quite follow- I’ve tried both ends of the wire and neither fit my phone but both ends fit the plug itself

It’s the right plug and the wrong cable. It should have one end usb c and one end lightning cable. You’ll be able to keep the plug part, it’s just the cable that needs to be swapped. Here is the link to Amazon cable.

As a Samsung using observer, this thread is hilarious. I know nothing about apple products but even I know this is the wrong charger...
My DP has this IPhone. It's a lightning cable. I'm actually quite surprised you didn't know what cable you were looking for...surely you could see it didn't look like the one you'd used up until now? Especially given you paid 35 quid. That's a lot of money!

Would you believe me if I told you I’m actually 25😂 this is the sort of thing my mum asks me and I roll my eyes at her, I’ll never do that again now I know how it feels to be clueless! 😂

HundredMilesAnHour · 16/01/2023 23:05

If the shop won't swap it for a lightning cable, just buy a USB C to lightning adapter. It'll cost you a fiver or so from Amazon. Simples.

eurochick · 16/01/2023 23:05

It needs a lightening port at the phone end. At the other end it needs whatever fits into the charging block they sold you - that could be usb-c.

PugInTheHouse · 16/01/2023 23:07

We have always bought our lightning or c cables from amazon, never had an issue at all. They do 2 or 3m ones for a really good price.

I sort of did know roughly what I was looking for, but when I took the card up the person told me it was the wrong type and I stupidly believed it, and when he got the wire it looks the exact same on the packing to my technophobic eye, it just looks like a little plug to go in the phone

£35 for a charger wire feels like daylight robbery doesn’t it! Although in part it’s my own fault for needing an extra longer one

Please don’t buy cheap cables or converters from eBay/Amazon

if Tesco don’t swap, although I think they will, lease buy genuine products

That’s what I’m worried about 😞 I had to open it to check that it actually fitted but now I’m worried they won’t take it back because of that.
im so annoyed at him for talking over me constantly and acting like I knew nothing and was stupid, he was so bloody patronising and the only reason I was asking is because it wasn’t possible just to pick it up and check the back for details of which iPhone it fitted, you had to pick a card and take it up to the till and they brought the product out and that’s when I double checked that the card was the right wire I’ve had before. But most of all I’m annoyed at myself for standing passively and not standing my ground! Absolutely kicking myself

Did you not think to take the phone with you and check in shop.

stresser · 16/01/2023 22:48

Sorry I made a typo on here- it’s an iPhone 12 I’ve got not 13… but I DEFINITELY told him the correct one (12) because I went into my settings in front of him and went down the device details to show him the exact model haha

I’ve got an iPhone 12 and USB C.

DixonD · 16/01/2023 23:10

Sorry, 12 Pro Max. Not sure if that makes a difference.

GarlicCrackers · 16/01/2023 23:10

For starters, a usb-b connector is a printer usb. So good luck fitting that in your phone.

so if you’d asked for usb-b they probably thought you meant usb-c

iohones are lightning ports.

paying 35 quid for a cable is ridiculous when they are on Amazon for a 5th of that

I actually bought a cheaper cable from a well established store (it was the correct cable just not the apple version) and it caused issues with the phone battery which ended up damaged, I think it was just a coincidence rather than because of the charger but it was an absolute nightmare to get it fixed on our cover because we hadn’t used the official apple products, since then I’ve always played it safe and got the official apple stuff even though it’s more expensive and probably just the same lol x

It still has lightning at the phone end though doesn't it?
