I am exactly as my username says, so I just need some reassurance that I’m worrying for no reason at all and it will be fine!

I had to buy a wire for my i phone charger today, and also a plug- I told them it was an iphone 13 and showed it to them, and they said it needed a usb c cable. I said I thought it was the B but they said that only refers to the fitting for the plug, and the plug they were selling me was for a C. So they went and got me the C and I bought it and I went home and surprise surprise it doesn’t fit my phone.

I’m kicking myself now because my guy instinct said he was wrong but he was so insistent and was talking over me each time I was trying to explain it- it’s a big high street brand so I stupidly trusted him and bought that one.

obviously I’ll take it back tomorrow but I’m just a bit worried they deny it or say they can’t swap it because I’ve opened the packaging and unwrapped the wire (I had to to try and fit it in my phone) but I’ve put it back in the box and wrapped it as best as I could, it was £35 so I’m just a bit worried they won’t swap it or take it back because obviously it’s a lot of money. Like I said in my username, I’m a stresser and have bad anxiety so I’m a bit worried about it tonight!

has anyone got any knowledge about this?! Absolutely kicking myself!

None of the iPhones use USB-C cables. They all use the lightening connector which is Apple specific. Other Apple products use USB-C cables but not tye phones.

You can buy an iPhone cable for a few pounds on Amazon.

HundredMilesAnHour · 16/01/2023 23:26

@stresser I'm being a bit sad and quoting myself lol but you seem to have missed my post about them overcharging you - or giving you the wrong cable accidentally (but charging for the right one). As long as they swap it, that's fine. But if they won't swap it, they owe you £16 back.

Op didn't buy it from apple, she bought it from tesco. I've just checked the app and they charge £35 for the 2m usb-c cable.

@Mummieslncorporated , they never said op bought it from apple. @HundredMilesAnHour checked the apple website for the RRP, if Tesco are selling at rrp then it looks like the op has wrongly been given a charger which wasn’t the one she was sold.
An easy mistake to make from shop staff, but the fact is, everyone is derailing this thread with unhelpful comments.
The OP will go to Tesco tomorrow to be told the item she has isn’t the same as what she has on her receipt, being the stressor she is she’ll probably stress out even more

As a Samsung using observer, this thread is hilarious. I know nothing about apple products but even I know this is the wrong charger...
My DP has this IPhone. It's a lightning cable. I'm actually quite surprised you didn't know what cable you were looking for...surely you could see it didn't look like the one you'd used up until now? Especially given you paid 35 quid. That's a lot of money!

Same. I thought maybe it was a US/UK thing, because iPhones in the US definitely use the lightening cable.

I'm not sure if the point of your post.

I'm saying that tesco charge £35 for the cable that op has bought.

I've just checked the apple website. They also charger £35 for a 2m cable (which is what the op bought). £19 is what they charge for a 1m cable. So op has definitely been charged correctly.

Op has bought c-c,the rrp of this charger is £19
OP needs lightning to c, rrp £35

op has gone to Tesco, paid for lightning to c, but received c-c instead.

I’m confusing myself now

You are wrong.

The price of the 2m cable is £35. The 1m cable is £19.

Op bought the 2m cable.

Op bought the 2m cable.

She got the 2 metre usb c - usb c cable, the rrp of 2 metre c-c is £19
op needs lightening to c 2 metre
instead of lightening to c 2m they gave her c-c 2metre

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 17/01/2023 02:08

I've just checked the apple website. They also charger £35 for a 2m cable (which is what the op bought). £19 is what they charge for a 1m cable. So op has definitely been charged correctly.

As an aside, that's a particularly terrible rip-off to charge £16 just for a metre of cable - no excuse of special electrical connectors or precision-engineered parts at all, just an extra metre of cable.

but op didn’t get this one, she got C-C

2 metre C-C (the one she received) is also £19

All iPhones since the iPhone 5 onward have a Lightning port.

No iPhone has ever had a USB port.

Originally these iPhones were provided with a cable with a Lightning connector on one end (that goes into the phone) and a USB-A connector on the other (that goes into a charger).

More recently Apple have started supplying a different cable, with the same Lightning connector at one end (that goes into the phone) but with a USB-C connector on the other end (that goes into a charger, which is no longer supplied in the box).

So the cable you have will work fine with your phone. It may however not fit into your charger if you've got a USB-C connector but a USB-A slot in your charger (or vice versa).

The guy in the shop was right in the sense that iPhone 13 came with the USB-C cable so it's reasonable to assume that's the one people generally use.

However, as Apple stopped supplying a charger in the box, a lot of people who have previously had iPhones decided that rather than investing in a new USB-C charger, they will stick with the old USB-A cable and USB-A charger that they had with a previous iPhone, to save money.

Mummieslncorporated · 17/01/2023 02:26

Not at Tesco (which is what matters). Not in the apple store on Amazon either

To be fair, I have now found it on apple's own website for £19 - it's not under iphone accessories, it's under ipad accessories, which is why I didn't see it to begin with. And every other apple 2m cable is £35, so it might be a misprice.

But op isn't owed £16 by tesco, as they sell it for £35. It really doesn't matter what the price is elsewhere - they don't offer a price match service.

Tezza1 · 17/01/2023 02:40

That's a Thunderbolt connection, which I use for my MacBook. The phones use lightning connectors.

Yabado · 17/01/2023 03:06

You need the one where bit you plug into the phone has several straight lines going down - like groves the other end of it is a usb type
I have a 12 and that’s what I have

mine is a usb type so I could plug it into a laptop it’s thicker or a usb plug

However I bought Apple Watch last year and it didn’t come with a charger so I had to buy one and that had to be plugged into a different type of plug as it’s the charging end is thinner which I assume is the usb - c so I had to by a new plug - the plug had two charging ports one for a usb type cable and one for the thinner type usb-c cable

but another apple charger I have only has a regular usb end for charging so fuck knows

and don’t even get me started on my android phones 😂😂

AbuelaGetTheUmbrellas · 17/01/2023 03:16

@Mummieslncorporated , you are misunderstanding what
@HundredMilesAnHour and @Mannymoomin have explained very clearly. Tesco charged @stresser for the correct product (£35 for usb-c to lightening) but gave her the wrong product (£19 usb-c to usb-c). @stresser , I’m assuming that Tesco have a system similar to Argos where you pay and collect separately- this would explain how the mistake occurred.

Llioed · 17/01/2023 03:33

Hi Op, you are correct, going by your photo you have been given the wrong cable. Please see the photo I have attached. THIS cable is the one you need - if you zoom in you will see the ends are slightly different. The left one goes into the plug and the right end goes into your phone.
Good luck - I hope you get it sorted.

SpookyBlackCat · 17/01/2023 04:26

I'm too lazy to read the whole thread, but Apple got around the law by including a little adapter cap that adjusts C-type to lightning type, so if they do refuse to exchange the cable you bought, you can buy the adapters pretty cheaply or ask around if anyone has one that they are not using as we have the adapters, but just buy lightning cables so we never use them.

TheOrigRights · 17/01/2023 04:29

TheOrigRights
My iPad uses exactly the same as my iPhone - lightening.
I have a lightening to USB-A cable and a lightening to USB-C cable

My old iPhone didn't have lightening, but my newer one does.

Depends on the year of the iPad. My iPad Pro 2020 has USB-C as do the new 2022 Airs (and I’d imagine all models in between)

Well, yes. My iPad is older than 2020. My response was to a poster who said iPads were different to iPhones.
