I am exactly as my username says, so I just need some reassurance that I’m worrying for no reason at all and it will be fine!

I had to buy a wire for my i phone charger today, and also a plug- I told them it was an iphone 13 and showed it to them, and they said it needed a usb c cable. I said I thought it was the B but they said that only refers to the fitting for the plug, and the plug they were selling me was for a C. So they went and got me the C and I bought it and I went home and surprise surprise it doesn’t fit my phone.

I’m kicking myself now because my guy instinct said he was wrong but he was so insistent and was talking over me each time I was trying to explain it- it’s a big high street brand so I stupidly trusted him and bought that one.

obviously I’ll take it back tomorrow but I’m just a bit worried they deny it or say they can’t swap it because I’ve opened the packaging and unwrapped the wire (I had to to try and fit it in my phone) but I’ve put it back in the box and wrapped it as best as I could, it was £35 so I’m just a bit worried they won’t swap it or take it back because obviously it’s a lot of money. Like I said in my username, I’m a stresser and have bad anxiety so I’m a bit worried about it tonight!

has anyone got any knowledge about this?! Absolutely kicking myself!

Would you believe me if I told you I’m actually 25😂 this is the sort of thing my mum asks me and I roll my eyes at her, I’ll never do that again now I know how it feels to be clueless! 😂

@stresser I was convinced it was her 😂 you are not alone!

Remember when they had that other charger before the lighting one? The OG iPhones, baffled us all when it changed to lightning cable

I’m only a little older than you, we all have these days

DixonD · 16/01/2023 23:12

PugInTheHouse · 16/01/2023 22:52

They're about £7 next day delivery on amazon.

That would not be a genuine Apple iPhone charger. I only buy Apple accessories for my phone.

Did you not think to take the phone with you and check in shop.

Sorry to be snappy but did you not think to read the full thread or at least my posts? I’ve already explained i took the phone in store and showed them, and went on my settings to show them the exact device details

Jeez, this thread is like a comedy sketch!
@stresser Next time, don't rely on a shop person's advice, look up what you need in the Apple store and make sure you know exactly what you need and what it's called. If you talk about the "plug" and "wire" a pompous idiot in a shop will feel able to walk all over you.

Sorry meant didn't you ask them to try it and show you it working.

This is the plug they sold to go with it …

This is exactly what I have for my iPhone 12 Pro Max. Are you SURE you’ve got a 12? I’m not trying to make you feel stupid, honestly. 😁

No I didn’t although I should have! That would have been a good idea and next time I’ll definitely try it in store as soon as I’ve bought it rather than taking it home to try

HundredMilesAnHour · 16/01/2023 23:15

@stresser I actually think the shop guy gave you the wrong product. I just checked the Apple website and the USB C (to USB C) cable you have is £19 for the 2 metre one. The correct cable that you wanted to buy (USB C to lightning - 2 metre) is £35 as you say but that's not what you were given!

So, if you were definitely charged £35, you were either overcharged or more likely, they charged for the lightning cable but gave you the USB C one by mistake.

PugInTheHouse · 16/01/2023 23:15

All iphones have lightning charging ports don't they? You can use usb-c to put into the plug but not un the phone. This thread is bizarre. The next iPhone will have a c port I think as it will be a legal requirement. Unless I've missed the latest iPhone that has a c port?

OnTheBoardwalk · 16/01/2023 23:16

They won’t show it working as they’d have to open the packing themselves which they won’t do

ExtraJalapenos · 16/01/2023 23:16

stresser · 16/01/2023 23:08

I sort of did know roughly what I was looking for, but when I took the card up the person told me it was the wrong type and I stupidly believed it, and when he got the wire it looks the exact same on the packing to my technophobic eye, it just looks like a little plug to go in the phone

£35 for a charger wire feels like daylight robbery doesn’t it! Although in part it’s my own fault for needing an extra longer one

Jeez this is even worse! You actually picked the right one and some tit made you pick another.
Honestly, given the circumstances and wrong info, they should swap it regardless of you opening it. And if they don't, stand your ground. It's a lot of money. You're within your rights to return.

DixonD · 16/01/2023 23:18

OP, visit the Apple Store on your phone and it will guide you to exactly the accessories that are compatible with your phone. It might end your confusion!

It's not the plug she is saying is wrong, it's the cable (like the one attached) it's got the wrong end to fit in the phone, c to c are android or macbook chargers. C to lightning is iPhone

Haha don’t worry you’re not making me feel stupid - I’ll take a photo of exactly what I showed the man in the shop lol, there was also another page in settings I showed him that says iPhone 12 but I’ve not screenshotted that aswell because it has all device details and serial numbers and stuff on it

In 'Apple land' C to C is also iPad.

Apple like to keep it nice and simple as this thread demonstrates 😂

Yep I always take the phone with me and ask them to show me it working.
I'm sure you'll be OK and they will change it though.

If there’s one thing this incident has taught me is I will NEVER roll my eyes at my mum asking a tech question ever again!

Yes sorry, I didn't mention that but yes it's ridiculous that the other devices are c to c but the phones aren't

I am baffled at the confusion on the thread, really early on the OP pictured the cable she bought.

@stresser I'm being a bit sad and quoting myself lol but you seem to have missed my post about them overcharging you - or giving you the wrong cable accidentally (but charging for the right one). As long as they swap it, that's fine. But if they won't swap it, they owe you £16 back.

RobertaFirmino · 16/01/2023 23:26

When you go back to the shop, remember that this cable has been mis-sold. Presumably the sale will have been recorded on the shop's CCTV. I'm not saying that they will get funny with you when you return, it's likely they will just exchange straight away. It's just with you saying that you were worried, I wanted to reassure you that you are in the right, they are in the wrong and the transaction will be on video if they try and deny anything.

RoseslnTheHospital · 16/01/2023 23:27

@HundredMilesAnHour iPads are Lightning ports as well, not usb C.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 16/01/2023 23:28

iPhones don't have a usb c port, they (famously) have Apple's own proprietary Lightning port.

Haven't they recently changed the law, though, so that Apple is forced to scrap their proprietary Lightning port and fit their phones with the C port instead - something about competition law? Although I don't know when they did/will come into effect - and it may even have been an EU ruling, so possibly different now for the UK?!

Ironically, I understand this was intended to avoid confusion; whereas before, it was much simpler for Apple users, as everybody knew that Apple = Lightning port.

The product - although very expensive (and a 2m cable isn't really that long, as cables go) - could still be useful for you, OP, if you use cables for other applications e.g. connecting peripherals to a computer. Keep the plug, get a replacement USB C to Lightning cable to replace the existing one, and then use the existing cable to connect an external drive/DVD player/whatever to your computer (if you have one).

Older models. My newish (last year) iPad Pro is USB C only.

Actually. My bad, the newest iPads have USB C ports.

bobbytorq · 16/01/2023 23:29

iPhone 12&13 are both lightning cables. The other end can be usb-c or usb-a depending on your plug.
