How often do you wash your towels?

Not AIBU but didn’t know where to put this. We are a family of 5 with 3 teenage boys so lots of showers. I don’t seem to have any system when washing towels, just take a few off the heated towel rail every few days. What do others do, wash them every day, all the towels once or twice a week?

Maybe I ought to give up work to do all the laundry that people seem to do. And build an extension to dry it all

Are you offering to do everyone’s laundry? If not, why can’t you work and do your own? How long does it take you to put some items in a machine and press a button?

I manage perfectly well with a full time job and no extension 🙄

So. I have a towel on the go at the moment. I know it had been on the go for a bit before Christmas. After Christmas I was going to wash it but I was planning to dye my hair and this is the only coloured one I like using. The rest of my towels I like using are white and I can’t use those when I’ve dyed my hair as the colour comes out for a week or so after (plum) This towel’s soft, stripey and the perfect size. I dyed my hair on New Year’s Day. Said towel is still on the go… I live alone (with the dog who changes his towels more often than me) and so nobody knows except me. And now you (shush!!). I’m planning a towel pants and socks wash at the end of next week. I guess it’ll get done then. Before then it might even get to dry the dog once too! Sometimes when I’m about to wash towels he gets to use one of mine. But hey, he’s clean. He’s had a shower. I’m only drying a clean body 😉

@Perfectpeace 4 of us. We all do sports. We work FT. Kids are out doing stuff every night & weekends. We both help out at stuff. We have daily laundry but I seriously don't have time nor drying space to wash 4 bath towels daily lol

But no one has asked you to or said you should. You seem incensed that others wash theirs daily but it has no impact on you or your family so I don’t understand why. Live and let live!

In my job I work with lots of families. I visit people at home. I can guarantee that most families I meet do not have the time nor money or space to wash & dry multiple towels every day. It's not a common cause of death either

snowtrees · 15/01/2023 23:20

@Perfectpeace no not incensed but Mumsnet at times is a very unusual place. No one I know washes towels for a whole family every day. Not even close

Thanks all, that makes me feel better, I thought everyone was going to say every day! 😳

So did I.
Where are all the "after every use or you are filthy scum" posters?
Or is the cost of living crisis finally forcing people to cut back.
This question was asked a couple of years ago and I got flamed and my head ripped off and served up on a platter for daring to suggest that people might consider the environment and wash their towels a bit less often.

HollyBerri · 15/01/2023 23:23

Honestly am shocked. Am no Mrs Boquet but I was ours every couple of days. I feel a bit yucky if I don’t. Daughters are covered in fake tan & make up & dropped on the floor.

MasterBeth · 15/01/2023 23:23

Why do you think anyone who replies to your posts is angry or incensed, @Perfectpeace ? We're just curious about how your towels get so dirty. What are you doing with them?

domesticgodmess · 15/01/2023 23:24

Growing up we always had clean towels daily, my mum still does this for my younger siblings living at home. Everything gets tumble dried so there is no issue of wet towels sitting around as would be the case if everyone was hanging up wet towels in bathrooms a d bedrooms.
When DH and I moved in together I thought he was a bit of a minger for re using towels but now I do it too. If my mum comes to stay I do give her clean towels every day as it's what she's used to and she is very good to us. Other guests I just leave a few sets of towels in the spare room and ask them to throw in the basket the ones they have used by the end of their stay.

SouperNoodle · 15/01/2023 23:24

The kids bath towels get washed after each use, DH and I use ours twice and then wash them.
Tea towels changed daily and hand towels a couple of times a week.

TheLizardQueen · 15/01/2023 22:43

Wow!! We wash our towels after every use, I wouldn’t have thought to do anything else. When I dry my arse or feet I don’t want to use the same towel the next day to dry my face!!

I use a flannel to dry my face. And I'm not delving in my bum, just wrapping the towel around me when I get out the shower Grin
My feet are squeaky clean, I wash them with exfoliating gloves and soap

BCxx · 15/01/2023 23:26

Omg my mind is blown reading this 😂🤯 Maybe THAT’S why I can never get through all my washings.. my husband hangs his damp towel up on the bathroom door all the time and reuses it but doesn’t appear to check or ever decide it should actually go in the washing. My toddler and my towels get washed after every wash 😳 even if it’s just a quick dry off when I come (clean) out a bath

whitesnowflake · 15/01/2023 23:26

Ours get washed every day.

MasterBeth · 15/01/2023 23:27

Can the people who wash their towels every day explain why...

My toddler and my towels get washed after every wash 😳 even if it’s just a quick dry off when I come (clean) out a bath

Why? How has it got dirty?

HufflepuffRavenclaw · 15/01/2023 23:28

Whenever I remember or feel they need doing. I cannot imagine a life so empty and banal that I have a schedule for washing my towels.

whattodo2019 · 15/01/2023 23:28

once a week and face cloths every two days

notangelinajolie · 15/01/2023 23:30

Only use towels once. They get thrown in the towel basket in the bathroom and I do a towel wash a couple of times a week.

notangelinajolie · 15/01/2023 23:31

Not sure I’d like to dry my bits on a towel someone else has used 🙃

JennyJone · 15/01/2023 23:33

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 15/01/2023 22:15

I wash mine every hour, along with everything else.

I have several washing machines so certain things don't contaminate others.

I have to pay a fortune to rent a house with a garage big enough.

I have one for underwear, one for tea towels, one for towels, one for sheets and one for clothes.

I have a few driers too so I can keep on top of the drying, my machines run constantly. I sleep in the utility so the bleeps wake me up so I can put new loads in.

🤣

snowtrees · 15/01/2023 23:36

@notangelinajolie towel basket sounds like you have lots of towels & space. I wish I had such space (genuine)

snowtrees · 15/01/2023 23:36

notangelinajolie · 15/01/2023 23:31

Not sure I’d like to dry my bits on a towel someone else has used 🙃

Except your partner? And maybe kids?

Tintackedsea · 15/01/2023 23:38

Once a week for bath towels, change the hand towels twice a week, kitchen towels daily, cloots daily or more often.

Chooksnroses · 15/01/2023 23:42

After 2-3 uses.

Livinginanotherworld · 15/01/2023 23:46

I like a clean towel after every 2-3 showers, once it loses that just washed nice fresh smell, it’s done. We all have our own colours, and separate guest towels.
