To wonder where Margot Robbie's internal organs are.... see Vanity Fair cover

This is not an intention to body shame - but I find the cover shot of Margot Robbie on Vanity Fair quite shocking. And unnecessary 😥
I have been just as thin, and was classed as underweight and diagnosed with an eating disorder.
I hope I'm not the only one who wonders what the next level for stars might be, if this is an aspirational "look". And for us regular humans.

Referring to an eating disorder as imaginary is ignorant in the extreme.

Someone who is too thin, and probably has an eating disorder.

And anyone who thinks that - and the prominent ribs (whether photoshopped or posed specifically to show them that way) on the VF cover - has as much a distorted view of what is or is not healthy, as I - apparently - do 😶

FGS, you can have no idea whether someone has an eating disorder based on what one body part looks like.

I thought eating disorders were a mental health issue. Am I right I'm understanding that they are in fact a body type?

OopsAnotherOne · 17/01/2023 18:30

“Too thin” for who though? The phrase keeps getting thrown around and it’s very ambiguous. I’m “too thin” for someone who likes a size 10 body type. I’m not “too thin” for me, I like how I look and I’m healthy. Some people might say as I’m “too thin” and you can see my ribs, I must have an ED. That’s not the case. If someone is happy and healthy, there is no “too thin”.

Jourdain11 · 17/01/2023 18:49

I've always been able to see my ribs. I must have a very longstanding eating disorder. AND I have skinny arms 😵

Not FOR anybody - unhealthily thin; as in, if BMI must be used - under 18 (the benchmark for underweight). By medical definition.

Having been - to my detriment - facetious myself - I recognise it when I see it.

I excuse you 😏

My BMI is below 18 but I am not unhealthy, I don’t have an eating disorder, I eat the right amount and I exercise. Fat people have told me I’m “too thin” in the past but my doctor entirely disagrees, so I’ll take his advice over people who need to look at themselves more than focusing on other’s bodies😘

They are, and you are correct (more facetiousness?). An eating disorder is of course NOT characterised by a particular body type, and I have never said THAT either 😶

Margot Robbie most definitely is not too thin. She looks great in that photograph. People’s ribs are supposed to be visible.

Who mentioned size 10 - and linked it to an eating disorder?

At my smallest dress size, I was US size 0 before it was even thing here. I think that translates to UK size 4. Even my shoe size had gone down to a 5 from 6.5, which was weird, as I never had fat feet.

At that time, I was not eating at all if I could help it.

I saw her on Grahame Norton other night and thought she is staggeringly beautiful ! I don’t think that’s a flattering picture of her body though.

Meaning - the person in that picture was suffering from an eating disorder. Fact.
Personally, I think the arms are "too thin", but that is NOT why I am saying they have an ED.
I would never - and HAVE never - said that someone has or has NOT a problem with disordered eating, unless I am inside their head, which is where it starts.

I watched a programme last night (did NOT seek it out, it was on quite late on BBC1, about Influencers and their negative effects), and remember hearing one of the talking heads say many people suffering from EDs are underweight. Not a direct quote, but the basics of what she said.

I knew that already, but am sure a few commenters on here would benefit from taking that on board.

Oh right. The arms are a body type now.
Which one?

I mentioned Kate Middleton earlier in the thread, someone who's often been accused of being "too thin". All this faux concern about women's health is so laughably dishonest. A problem that genuinely "too thin" i.e ill women have is lack of menstruation, and they therefore can't conceive. Kate has had three successful pregnancies. "Too thin" my arse.

Oh, right. Arms aren’t part of a human body now?

And many are underweight
I'm not sure why that can't be discussed and discouraged without saying everyone is jealous and needs to lose weight

LoveMyPiano · 17/01/2023 19:36

ComfortablyDazed · 17/01/2023 19:31

You're just being obtuse.
There are, as you know I'm sure - generally three body types - and, of them, an ectomorph - such as the Princess of Wales - would be the "type" most likely to visually appear more slender than "average".
(And be "accused" of having an ED.)
