To wonder where Margot Robbie's internal organs are.... see Vanity Fair cover

This is not an intention to body shame - but I find the cover shot of Margot Robbie on Vanity Fair quite shocking. And unnecessary 😥
I have been just as thin, and was classed as underweight and diagnosed with an eating disorder.
I hope I'm not the only one who wonders what the next level for stars might be, if this is an aspirational "look". And for us regular humans.

Why has there been such an influx of thin-bashing threads these last few days? It's irritating, depressing and very hypocritical.

I agree it is an oddly-posed photo, but she doesn't look unhealthy. Is being able to see someone's ribs abnormal?

LoveMyPiano · 15/01/2023 13:36

@Eyerollcentral
No - strongly deny that asking his opinion - and this thread - is about "hot or not", for God's sake. That was never my point.
I asked his opinion because he was handy last night.
And again, facetious title aside - the IMAGE used for the cover is the issue.

She looks great. Slim, lean, toned and healthy not underweight. Healthy slim people often have a visible outline of ribcage. Hers is accentuated because she's leaning back and no doubt breathing in and holding her stomach muscles taut.

The average person is heavier and less toned but it's incorrect to think someone slimmer and leaner is unheathily "skinny". Most of us carry too much body fat than is ideal and we don't like hearing it. It's true though.

Making such a feature of the ribs is - weird.
She would look lovely without the cut-outs on the dress.... I am not sure if it is some nod to Babylon.

The "thin-bashing" [I have not see any other threads] as you call it, may stem from larger questions being asked - not by me - about the "return" of "skinny" in the fashion world - if it ever went away (which it didn't).

I wondered that too. I think it's likely a new extension of the myriad 'omg I'm so fat how do I lose weight' threads that pop up every year in the couple of weeks after Christmas.

Margot Robbie looks just fine to me (and my ribs show too if I stand like that); even if she didn't I can't see how starting threads to slag off another woman's appearance is in any way constructive or helpful.

HaroldandWilly · 15/01/2023 13:44

Slim woman looks slim. Get bashed for it on the internet. Puts a disclaimer about NOT being a body shaming post, then goes on to, continually and incredulously body shame slim woman/women. Shows picture of slim woman to triathlete man 'very involved in fitness' for some male misogyny slagging off to add to the mix.

Surprised this thread hasn't been deleted yet.

BunchHarman · 15/01/2023 13:45

What I’m learning from this thread is:

Body shaming a slim woman = good. The skinny bitch deserves it, she is probably lying about not having an eating disorder and is therefore a disgrace. Won’t someone please, think of the children.

Body shaming a fat woman = evil. How fucking dare you? Fat can be healthy. How dare you tear a woman down for her body shape. #bodypositive

Jourdain11 · 15/01/2023 13:47

There's been an outbreak of them, as far as I can see! According to MN, anyone who is below average size is miserable, status-driven and depriving themselves; has a disordered sense of body image; eats only salad and will regret this because they'll soon start to look scraggy and haggard. Oh, and thin is not attractive - everyone should want curves - and you have to choose between face and arse as soon as you're over the age of 30. Nobody is naturally thin, they all subscribe to the thin = superior narrative, as above.

RealBecca · 15/01/2023 14:01

OP you need to focus on your own recovery and not start threads about weight and eating disorders. It's not healthy or normal.

This thread is just turning into a stream of slagging off women who are thin. Women come in all shapes and sizes. I’m 5ft2 and a size UK 6, I don’t have a thigh gap (they don’t actually exist btw, unless you stand with your legs slightly apart, or use photoshop) I work out a lot, 4 times a week, this includes a 7 mile run once a week and lots of weight training. I have abs because I do loads of sit ups and sit ups using weights. I’m a 34C so I do have boobs, albeit not massive ones. I’m very fit and strong, far from a weak anorexic. I eat what I like, I don’t diet as such, I just try to eat lots of fruit and veg but I certainly don’t ever turn down a chocolate cake! If I suck my stomach in it looks like MR’s in this photo. It doesn’t particularly look nice but it sucks in just as much as this. I’ve had 2 kids. I certainly do not have any eating disorder. There’s an awful lot of green eyed monster coming out in this thread now, and I think you need to have a good think about what body shaming actually is because you’re doing a heck of a lot of it in this thread.

Off topic but if you are overall a 6 you will definitely need a smaller bra band than 34 - you're more likely to be around a 28F/FF. I am a UK 8 and wear 28E/F.

limitedperiodonly · 15/01/2023 14:06

Call off the search OP. Margot Robbie's internal organs will be where you would expect to find anyone's. She's just not fat.

Londoncatshed · 15/01/2023 14:07

Awful photo, as you don’t focus on her face, just her mid section. I suspect she is very fit and healthy as it’s her job to be. Remember also, some people are just naturally slender. I’m not talking about celebs that drop lots of weight but normal young women and men who are naturally thin. The abuse my friend received, and name calling because she was tall and naturally willowy was awful.
Eating disorders are a mental health illness and often about control, they do not simply develop from seeing a slim person and wanting to emulate them.

cinci · 15/01/2023 14:07

They do exist... I'm naturally thin and lost more weight post breastfeeding. I definitely have a thigh gap, not on purpose. They certainly exist, even if you don't have one yourself.. i have to eat genuinely huge portions, and never -allow myself to be hungry to get rid of it which I very much enjoy

Yesterdaywasntreal · 15/01/2023 14:08

I think she is sucking her stomach in and stretching, this will cause that. Her weight looks healthy. It really annoys me that when you're slim people think they have the right to comment, if this was a curvier person on the front cover would this thread exist? My own dm will often say to me "you're looking thin, do you eat etc?" It is unbelievably irritating, I would never say to her "you're looking overweight are you overeating?" I think alot of people have lost the view on what a healthy slim person looks like

They do indeed; I've always had a thigh gap (unless I cross my legs) and so does my 64 year old mother! My grandfather used to say we had legs like Princess Margaret. We never quite got to the bottom of how he knew what Princess Margaret's thighs looked like...

MarshaBradyo · 15/01/2023 14:13

Awful photo, as you don’t focus on her face, just her mid section

It’s the photographic muted quality of her face and the use of likely make up, pose, photoshop which imo makes the image a poor one

Not her shape which is great

She'd be an entirely different colour if her organs were missing 😬

WestwardHo1 · 15/01/2023 14:22

That VF cover image makes her look "too thin".

Too thin for what?

People are always moaning that the Princess of Wales is "too thin". It's clearly not true as she is fit and presumably healthy and has borne three children. She's just thinner than the moaners are, and makes them feel fat.

That's generally the essence of it.

The "thin-bashing" [I have not see any other threads] as you call it, may stem from larger questions being asked - not by me - about the "return" of "skinny" in the fashion world - if it ever went away (which it didn't).

Skinny heroin chic went out in the 90s. We now have an influx of ‘curvy’ plus sized models that are en vogue. I think it’s nice to see a variation of sizes in magazines and modelling clothes. Healthy weight will always (I certainly hope) be ‘fashionable’ because this is what everyone should really be aiming for.

This thread reminds me of a post I saw on Facebook once, it was a photo of a slim, fit, healthy looking woman. The comments section was full of bashing, people saying ‘give that woman a sandwich’ and ‘She needs to eat a burger’. Funny part was the picture was of an Olympic gold winning athlete who is anything but weak and anorexic 😂

workiskillingme · 15/01/2023 16:07

@Monoprix honestly could your post be any more disgusting ? Seriously you are moaning about people slating thin people and making ridiculously condescending and superior assumptions about anyone who isn't skinny?
Do you not realise what you've just said

workiskillingme · 15/01/2023 16:11

Rickandmortified100 · 15/01/2023 11:38

I think she looks strong, healthy, and beautiful! It’s a beautiful photo. It’s okay to be health conscious and enjoy exercise. If I posted a similar photo of an overweight woman being similarly negative and judgemental id be flamed, so why is it okay to be negative and judgemental about women of a lower (but still healthy) weight?

Now come on are you honestly trying to dispute there are many threads/posts about 'why are we trying to promote/normalise an unhealthy body image' if someone has a pad of fat on their stomach/thighs?

Interesting- but only on MN it appears you can't think someone is too skinny unless you are morbidly obese /jealous/lazy and all the other hyperbole you would expect to try and shut down conversation

RosaGallica · 15/01/2023 16:26

I find it very sad that after so much progress for women’s rights, after so much fighting to be recognised and taken seriously in, women themselves increasingly view themselves and others as nothing but physical bodies and judge them on appearance rather than ability or skill.
Hasn’t the internet and conspicuous consumerism been great.

In 2022, we also had pills supposedly to induce weight gain on instagram, as a side note. Being skinny isn't really in fashion for long women anymore.

In that article you linked, someone is quoted saying they are sick of the sticks and bones look. That's a pretty nasty thing to say but oh well, skinny people are bad and make others feel bad so they deserve it after all.

And I think anyone saying Margot is too thin (as opposed to promoting an unrealistic image by sucking her tummy in) opens themselves to those judgements. She is clearly a healthy weight-
