The co ap cat. Aubi to complain

Tinktravels · 14/01/2023 14:33

At my local co-op in the village where I live half of the time that I go in I go in there is a random cat walking around the aisles.
I have asked staff about this before but All they have really said is that it is the local cat and it is always in and out of the few little shops there.

I am definitely not a cat lover and I don't really like the thought of the cat walking around the food shop.
Aubi to complain or should I just let it go and drive further out to a different store if it bothers me.

@SirCumference to be honest I doubt it's going to do anything to the food but I just really hate the thought of it .
I don't personally have allergies but a lot of people do!

Maybe I am just a cat hater.

There is uncovered fruit in store yes

The cat is the least threat to uncovered fruit, think about the person sneezing into their hand, then handling the fruit and putting it back.

I presume you wash it anyway.

The cat's fine, IMO I'd like it.

Tinktravels · 14/01/2023 16:54

@Sparklingbrook oh nope I didn't notice that either until you said! I also never proof read anything which I should probably start doing as when texting I always speak into my phone and let it type for me, and it always gets things wrong!

Well i've posted a post meant for another thread on this one-it's about cat poo so we can both stand in the naughty corner.

On another note, you are stealth boasting because all Co-Ops I have been in are soooo expensive. Assume yours is the same? Grin

My local Co op has a ginger cat that wanders around.

Same here! You're not in a village just north of Northampton, are you? 😂

EmmaEmerald · 14/01/2023 17:00

Cba to read whole thread

am I the first to say "that's a great cat right there"?

Cats don’t like fruit.

Tinktravels · 14/01/2023 17:01

@Sparklingbrook I sell things online so I have to go to the post office most days which is inside the co-op so ite just for convenience really but I agree they are overpriced!

@squashyhat might this be an East Sussex village by any chance? If so, I was about to comment the same! 😂

Acqua · 14/01/2023 17:02

Poor thing is probably cold and feels safe there. Have a heart.

TwoMonthsOff · 14/01/2023 14:49

But we have them in our homes, near our food and it’s fine 🤷🏻‍♀️

This.

My mum told me that years ago every grocer, butcher etc had a mouser (cat)
Said butchers cat used lie in beside the trays of mince to catch the sun and guess what.....no one died.

I personally would love to shop where a radom cat wandered about. Independent garden centres where I am have cats and they've all got a cafe on site and I'm not daft to think that cat never goes into the kitchen to mooch.

Tamarindtree · 14/01/2023 17:05

Two famous cats spring to mind. The Leadenhall Market cat that got run over by a van in 1995. I petted him every week day and was gutted when he was killed.

Then there was the huge cat in The Brighton Bead shop possibly the same era, Beautiful cat that was.

Tinktravels · 14/01/2023 17:12

I'd just like to point to everyone mentioning the fruit, I didn't mean the cat would crawl all over it, someone asked if there was uncovered food so I was just answering the question.

We had a resident cat in the local B & M (central Scotland). There was a lot of debate on the local Facebook pages - some against, mostly for. He sat near the entrance and was petted by many customers.

Eventually he was rehomed within the family by his owner for quite sensible reasons - he was unhappy at home because of young toddler/other cat/something like that, so he was risking his life in the traffic to get to B & M and public adulation.

He has his own Facebook page and his owner still posts pics occasionally.

Greengagesnfennel · 14/01/2023 17:13

I'm with you op, but it looks like we're in the tiny minority.

Tinktravels · 14/01/2023 17:14

@Greengagesnfennel thanks, I honestly thought it would be more split on the responses!

Our Tesco had a cat called George. He was a well loved local celebrity. If anybody had complained about him they would have chased outta town by locals waving pitch forks. Rightly so too.

We had Mango the tesco cat. He was more of a celebrity than most of the humans in the area. Lovely cat.

I can see the allergy problems, but that can presumably be a problem in many places. If you were allergic to horses/ cats/ dogs you wouldn't want to stand near me in a queue as, whilst I do try to maintain hygienic standards, I can't get rid of all the animal hair all the time.

Plus, it's a cat. It will just cat, there is nothing you can do about it.

Throwncrumbs · 14/01/2023 17:16

I worked in a local Tesco express for a while, we could have done with a cat there as there where rats about, it occurs in every shop, I would rather a cat than a rat!!

EmmaEmerald · 14/01/2023 17:17

Thanks to pp for saying about the Bodega Cats Twitter

no crisps though!

I would love to have a cat in the local shop!

FannythePinkFlamingo · 14/01/2023 17:17

Our Co-op has a cat. He's a local celebrity with his own FB page. Co-ops must give off cat friendly vibes. And YABU OP. People with filthy hands touch the uncovered fruit and veg all the time. I doubt the cat is curling up to sleep in amongst the tomatoes!

DialsMavis · 14/01/2023 17:20

Our Co-op has a cat too. WTAF is going on?

sunglassesonthetable · 14/01/2023 17:21

Cats are known for being clean.

I'm guessing but pretty sure staff are not going to be letting the cat near the open food products. Which are , let's face it up off the ground on shelves.

Patineur · 14/01/2023 17:22

Tinktravels · 14/01/2023 14:48

Maybe Iabu then as it doesn't seem to bother others. I'll make the trip to the little Tesco about further out in future as I know it's a me issue really.

I just think about the fact that it's probably outside killing birds of vermin and then strolling around a food shop!

And? How does that affect the food, given that you presumably wash anything unwrapped anyway?

PriamFarrl · 14/01/2023 17:22

No shops near me have cats. I’d go to one on account of it having a cat. When I was little I used to love to go to an old fashioned junk shop with my mum. The shop had its own cat. I’d spend time with the cat while mum looked around.

WisherWood · 14/01/2023 17:23

People with filthy hands touch the uncovered fruit and veg all the time.

Oh god, yes. I don't mind uncovered things that I'm going to cook, but I avoid buying uncovered baked goods. Maybe I'm just overly picky, I probably am, but other people's hygiene, or lack thereof, makes me queasy. Cats, not so much.

WiddlinDiddlin · 14/01/2023 17:26

You're more likely to catch a nasty illness or parasite from another human than a cat, in this context. Children in particularly are spectacular disease and parasite vectors.

Last I checked, they're allowed in food stores... I really wouldn't worry about the cat.

OntarioBagnet · 14/01/2023 17:27

titchy · 14/01/2023 14:43

Do you not wash fruit? Eugh! People cough and sneeze over fruit, pick it up to check it's ripeness with their havent-washed-after-using-toilet hands. Please wash your fruit.

Besides cats don't eat fruit so Tiddles isn't going to be licking it!

My cat eats fruit and veg. It goes nuts for raspberries and will break into a pack a eat the lot. Also loves apple, cheese, peppers.
