To find Michael Mosley annoying

I can’t stand him. He seems too patronising and slimey.
He and his wife are money grabbing.
He invents a new part of his diet every year to try to sell more books when they’re all a rehash of the last. 5-2 /sugar free/clever guts/ new 5-2/ fast 800/fast 800 easy/fast 800 Keto. The Keto recipe book by his wife has some meals where a portion is over 20g of carb - that’s not Keto. He’s always saying not to have sweetener yet it’s in his milkshakes. He says about processed foods and then brings out a processed powdered mushroom soup. Now it’s diet season he’s bloody everywhere. Am I the only one who doesn’t like him?

He talks a lot of sense . They're are clearly loads of people who do t understate that basically we are what we eat

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 24/01/2024 18:27

YANBU. I’ve always felt guilty about hating his voice but I loathe it. Mannerisms to. And the 800 calorie limit put me off his content as well as I’d recently recovered from a bout of anorexia during which I was eating… 800 calories a day!

This has got nothing whatsoever to do with people finding him irritating. Ridiculous comment.

GreekDogRescue · 24/01/2024 18:59

Is he related to Oswald Mosley?

Of course its related to the question!!

If you think he talks a lot of sense, you're probably less likely to find him irritating.

Yes

OP, I'm late to the thread, so missed the vote, but yanbu. I dislike him for all the reasons you say and also because his tv programmes make conclusions based on very limited evidence. I can't give you a recent example, because I now avoid his shows, but in the past they have been along the lines of:

  • There is anecdotal evidence that X is good for you so I'm going to put it to the test.
  • A small number, e.g. 3 people will try X for a month or so.
  • He will interview them to ask them if X had positive effects (note, no controls for the placebo effect).
  • They usually say X worked.
  • He declares X as proven.

Not exactly scientific!

He reminds me of "Dr" Gillian Mckeith from channel 4 who was featured in Ben Goldacre's book, Bad Science: https://www.theguardian.com/science/2010/jul/18/ben-goldacre-gillian-mckeith-twitter

WalKat · 24/01/2024 19:25

Yeah he is a bit annoying.
His Fast800 diet is extremely effective if you need to lose weight quickly, it really worked wonders for me and would be good in certain circumstances e.g for an operation to get BMI down.....but good luck sticking to it for any longer than a few weeks!!

GreekDogRescue · 24/01/2024 19:52

greatvisuals · 24/01/2024 19:12

Yes

Is he a grandchild?
Oswald had quite a few children with his 2 wives.
Nothing online. I suspect he keeps it quiet but interesting nonetheless

Papyrophile · 24/01/2024 20:02

He's okay. If a few million people watch or listen to him and realise that they're eating crap and change their minds, reverse their Type 2 diabetes, then the NHS is saving ££££££££££££. Not keen on his voice though.

JanglingJack · 24/01/2024 20:35

At least Harry Hill had the gall to practice.

I think.

No idea where Phil Spector fits in to this.

CherryRipe1 · 24/01/2024 20:40

@GreekDogRescue Maximilian and Mike, separated at birth.

CherryRipe1 · 24/01/2024 20:48

@JanglingJack I believe Harry Hill was a gynaecologist 🥺 ,the mind boggles.
I think it's Dr Tim Spector another diet & gut guru.

Ive just said on another thread that the public dont want to hear that ultimately you have to eat fewer calories, so they want some bells and whistles method to lose weight.

But advice is always stating the obvious, what more do people want? The vast majority of people who are overweight need to eat fewer calories to lose weight (if they want to lose weight)

So what do you want him to say?

The calorie thing has been thoroughly debunked by science (not the diet industry). We know a lot more know about the human body than we did decades ago. Our body processes different foodstuffs and nutrients differently. An example of something that that surprises many people and ‘feels wrong’ due to what has been drilled into us for so long, is that animal fats are beneficial for us. They slow down digestion resulting in sugars (refined or otherwise) being released into the bloodstream more slowly. Meaning the body ticks along nicely, feeling fuller longer and not dumping sugars quickly for our systems to struggle with, then lay down as body fat. Vegetable oils that are not cold pressed and all Margerines/Spreads are trans fats which are terrible for our health. This also applies to cold pressed oils (including Olive Oil) when heated, so we shouldn’t cook with them!

We absolutely know now that all calories are not equal. Our bodies are too complex for that.

What a shame, I've met him a few times and he never once asked me to drop my knickers.

I was ready!

JanetareyouokareyouokJanet · 24/01/2024 20:59

He looks and sounds like a character from The Wind in the Willows.

And yet the Mediterranean diet is held up as one to aim for and they cook with olive oil.. I find that one difficult, used rapeseed for years but then I think that's a 'seed oil'. Used butter but then my cholesterol jumped... Hard to win sometimes.

So much of the advice we’re still given is out of date. What is good about the Mediterranean diet of course, is that it includes a lot of veg and tomato’s. It also includes a lot of Italian cheese and butter, but they careful don’t tell us that 🤷‍♀️ I cook with ground nut oil. Coconut oil is fine too. It’s vegetable oils that turn into transfats when heated.

mikado1 · 24/01/2024 23:12

But olive oil is specifically mentioned as one of the good bits.. and yes they heat it. Considering the diet and the areas are linked to better health, maybe olive oil is not quite so awful 🤔

mikado1 · 24/01/2024 23:13

Thanks for the tip on ground nut oil. I don't trust coconut oil for some reason! Not convinced by its health benefits.

MedSchoolRat · 24/01/2024 23:18

That.is.not.true.

They pour it liberally over salads, dip bread into it and use in a multitude of other ways cold and it’s very good like that, it’s heating it that is the problem.

Yes, sorry. You’re quite right. I should have said all the ones made with vegetable oil.

Yes but they v much cook with it also. Anyway I will look at groundnut oil.

JellyfishandShells · 25/01/2024 00:11

I used to like him when he did his earlier programmes- didn’t and still don’t find him ‘slimy’ or patronising and rather like his voice, it’s friendly and enthusiastic.

But agree that he is overexposed now , ubiquitous and everything is a retread of things he has done before and quite recently.
