I can’t stand him. He seems too patronising and slimey.
He and his wife are money grabbing.
He invents a new part of his diet every year to try to sell more books when they’re all a rehash of the last. 5-2 /sugar free/clever guts/ new 5-2/ fast 800/fast 800 easy/fast 800 Keto. The Keto recipe book by his wife has some meals where a portion is over 20g of carb - that’s not Keto. He’s always saying not to have sweetener yet it’s in his milkshakes. He says about processed foods and then brings out a processed powdered mushroom soup. Now it’s diet season he’s bloody everywhere. Am I the only one who doesn’t like him?

I fully bought into the blood sugar diet about 5 years ago. Followed it religiously and did the strict programme for the time he recommended (think it was 3 months) I lost 3 stone. The second I started eating a limited amount of carbs, the weight just piled back. So I started his 5:2 diet and couldn't shift any weight. I still make a lot of the recipes now, so it wasn't a complete waste. But, it's just added to my list of yoyo diets completed over a 30 year period, that inevitably make me gain the weight back and then some, the second I stop them and try to just eat sensibly.

I'm a type1 diabetic for 44 years and would still say he's right most of the time but haven't used his diets just recently I've been having problems with acid reflux went to the doctors and was prescribed Omeprazole and although it helps I still have to drink litres of gaviscone although not as much as I did before taking the capsules. I wondered if should alter my diet to include fermented veg such as kin che and beetroot like he told the woman on last weeks TV program. But worry that make it worse.

The calorie thing has been thoroughly debunked by science (not the diet industry). We know a lot more know about the human body than we did decades ago. Our body processes different foodstuffs and nutrients differently. An example of something that that surprises many people and ‘feels wrong’ due to what has been drilled into us for so long, is that animal fats are beneficial for us. They slow down digestion resulting in sugars (refined or otherwise) being released into the bloodstream more slowly. Meaning the body ticks along nicely, feeling fuller longer and not dumping sugars quickly for our systems to struggle with, then lay down as body fat. Vegetable oils that are not cold pressed and all Margerines/Spreads are trans fats which are terrible for our health. This also applies to cold pressed oils (including Olive Oil) when heated, so we shouldn’t cook with them!

We absolutely know now that all calories are not equal. Our bodies are too complex for that.

Of course there are differences in the way the body processes different food groups, but in terms of significance in losing weight, its too small to make a difference for overweight and obsee people, too many people want to believe they can avoid eating less overall, its not an attractive prospect. But it is the reality.

But if you are 5 stone overweight, you eat fewer calories, live in a calorie deficit and you will lose weight. The types of foods you eat will make that harder or easier, you can live in a calorie defict of cake if you like but you probably wouldnt last very long and it wouldnt provide your body with the nutrients it needs making you crave more and eat more

He never was a GP. He has never even practised as a doctor, he just has a degree in medicine. He's just out to make money from ideas that are not all scientifically sound.

I followed the fast800program. First ever diet… kinda worked but also probs caused metabolism crash and weight gain.
My sense of betrayal is his presentation as an altruistic guy who wants to help with public health issues (assisted by working thru public broadcasters and non-profits) when it really is about business and $$$… there are paywalls for every part of his diets eg. buy book, access online program, buy recipes, buy shakes… He’s not a disinterested party. As a journalist he is perfectly positioned to present information without seeming to need to declare interest. Seems unethical.

I watched “Australia’s Health Revolution” without knowing he was a businessman. (His books etc. are never directly mentioned but the ideas behind them are.) Afterwards, as the series set me up to, I googled the concept of 800 calories expecting free information that built on the documentary, only to discover I would need to buy in. Of course I did “buy in”, being highly motivated at this stage, having effectively watched a cleverly disguised, long-form infomercial, that was the series.

I also understand he was involved in research publication without declaring commercial interest. Finally it has emerged that its not always great for women particularly to calorie restrict. So kinda mad at him for being disengenuous.

I think his 'Just One Thing' programme on Radio 4 is interesting. I don't begrudge someone trying to make money, and he has brought IF to the masses, which many have found beneficial, and you don't have to pay to find as much info as you need to follow it.
It's his voice though - ugh gives me the ick!

Do you have any links/book/podcast etc recommendations about this?

CranfordScones · 12/04/2024 10:53

My understanding is that he trained in psychiatry, got disillusioned and joined the BBC as a producer in the mid 1980s. So he's really a broadcaster. I presume the 'Dr' title is by dint of his degree/training - but I doubt he's kept up his medical registration. He's married to a GP. He's basically a broadcaster.

I don't mind him - at least he tries to bring a strand of objectivity and a doctor's mind to the things he looks at. The BBC is afraid of challenging its viewers' minds in any way, so you're lucky it's not a comedian fronting the programmes.

This is one. You’ll find lots of reliable information if you just search it! https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/stop-counting-calories

Thank you

So much of the advice we’re still given is out of date. What is good about the Mediterranean diet of course, is that it includes a lot of veg and tomato’s. It also includes a lot of Italian cheese and butter, but they careful don’t tell us that 🤷‍♀️ I cook with ground nut oil. Coconut oil is fine too. It’s vegetable oils that turn into transfats when heated.

Not to mention pasta! Let's not acknowledge that eh?
