To find Michael Mosley annoying

I can’t stand him. He seems too patronising and slimey.
He and his wife are money grabbing.
He invents a new part of his diet every year to try to sell more books when they’re all a rehash of the last. 5-2 /sugar free/clever guts/ new 5-2/ fast 800/fast 800 easy/fast 800 Keto. The Keto recipe book by his wife has some meals where a portion is over 20g of carb - that’s not Keto. He’s always saying not to have sweetener yet it’s in his milkshakes. He says about processed foods and then brings out a processed powdered mushroom soup. Now it’s diet season he’s bloody everywhere. Am I the only one who doesn’t like him?

And the £300 a week or month they were spending on take aways it beggars belief

£300 a week! Or £15K a year!!! But they didn’t know why they were overweight. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Plus they were living with his Mum, along with their kids, while they were trying to save up for a house. If I were his mother I’d have been spelling it out to them that they were royally taking the piss out of her.

How the HELL no-one apparently notices they're spending £ 15k a year on takeaways when they're trying to save for a house deposit baffled me. I mean, FIFTEEN THOUSAND A YEAR?? for two years?? did they ever wonder where the money was going and why they're overweight? and how much are they earning, FGS, if they can spend that?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 23/01/2024 14:54

He confuses correlation with causation. To be fair, so do Spector & the van Tulleken guy plenty of professors & medical doctors (!)

The Van Tulleken guy has an article in the latest Radio Times telling readers that health fads are not worth the money and that you should work out who profits from your health problems and anxieties? which I found more than slightly ironic coming from him.

He also manages to be even more irritating than MM.

Tattletwat · 23/01/2024 14:54

Don't like and don't trust him, he's like a slimy diet salesman.

He uses his title as a Dr to sell books and documentarys despite never having practiced as a Dre, he also jumps on a lot of latest diet fads and makes a lot of money out of pushing them.

And as the nutritionist linked to up thread most doctors know very little about nutrition without further study.

CherryRipe1 · 23/01/2024 14:57

Grifter. I occasionally watch his stuff but it's nothing revelatory.

AzureBlue99 · 23/01/2024 15:01

I find some of his non diet stuff interesting. The do one thing type. Small bite size achievable things.

Yet following the diet MM is promoting will lead to health benefits. That is an empirical fact.
People don't like him, because he has an annoying manner and voice. Plus he's pointing out that the country has a problem with UPF consumption and is quite frankly grossly overweight and unhealthy.

Deathbyathousandcats · 23/01/2024 15:13

Yes! He’s a pain in the arse

LadyBird1973 · 23/01/2024 15:13

I don't warm to him either, but all those diet types monetise what they do and I guess we can't moan if the public choose to consume their products.

CherryRipe1 · 23/01/2024 16:29

@Missamyp Yes very true. I've followed a lot of what he promotes via other sources including advice from a registered nutritionist and my vitamin and inflammatory markers have greatly improved, eg kidney function, esr, ferritin, rh. factor. I suppose if he's spreading the word to the masses then it's a good thing, even if he monetizes it.

Tiffanyis · 23/01/2024 16:34

I think the science he promotes is excellent, but he's not a great broadcaster - his lispy voice is very annoying, especially on radio/podcasts.

LadyBird1973 · 23/01/2024 16:37

I think his main problem is that he lacks the charisma of the van Tulleken (sp?) twins, who are very good broadcasters as well as bring knowledgeable and cute

AnnieSnap · 23/01/2024 16:41

I loath him an his faux expert advice. He qualified as a doctor 30 years ago, practiced for 5-minutes and has been touting his ill informed, non-expert stuff in the media ever since!

Oblomov23 · 23/01/2024 16:42

Yes.
Money grabbing all the time.

CherryRipe1 · 23/01/2024 16:43

@LadyBird1973 Spot on! I can highly recommend Chris Van Tulleken's book Ultra processed people. Riveting reading.

LadyBird1973 · 23/01/2024 16:44

It is a very good read. He's ruined carb killa/grenade bars for me!

I agree. It really stunned me how much of the 'food' I eat isn't actually food at all. Not in the real sense. Just empty calories, flavourings, sugar and various other chemicals and additives.

LadyBird1973 · 23/01/2024 19:35

I'm watching last nights programme - I can't believe that couple are spending 15k per year on takeaways, while living with his mum. And mum gives the impression that she takes no prisoners, so I'm very surprised they've all survived 3 years of sharing a house. 🏠 d be mad as hell if my kids were wasting that kind of money, while living with me to save a deposit!

QAnoun · 23/01/2024 19:49

I can’t stand MM’s wife. Unbearably smug.

Mosley is giving his agenda he doesn't give a shit about health.

Yep. Everything is a grift to him.

Bornonsunday · 24/01/2024 17:06

"Just one thing" seems like a good idea, until you realise there are 80 episodes.

So, "Just 80 things" then?!!

EatMoreTurnips · 24/01/2024 17:50

I I originally thought that he was a scientist who knew a thing or two about what we eat.

I now consider him to be a bit of a charlatan who has hooked people in to his massive dieting empire.

Dacadactyl · 24/01/2024 17:52

I really like him. Think he talks sense and is inspirational. I've been putting a little bit of weight on, I watched one of his shows and am back to watching what I eat and exercising.

soupfiend · 24/01/2024 17:56

WinterFoxes · 09/01/2023 12:15

YANBU. I can't stand him either. He is patronising and creepy. I don't feel his focus is on health but on building his own wealth. Sure he's a businessman but there is something sneaky about making out you have the true key to physical wellbeing when actually you're just hyping the latest trends.

I hate how he states the bleein obvious as though it's a decree of wisdom from his superior mind: Get enough sleep! Reduce calories! Exercise! Wow - Michael, what phenomenal insights you are sharing with the ignorant masses.

Ive just said on another thread that the public dont want to hear that ultimately you have to eat fewer calories, so they want some bells and whistles method to lose weight.

But advice is always stating the obvious, what more do people want? The vast majority of people who are overweight need to eat fewer calories to lose weight (if they want to lose weight)

So what do you want him to say?
