To find Michael Mosley annoying

I can’t stand him. He seems too patronising and slimey.
He and his wife are money grabbing.
He invents a new part of his diet every year to try to sell more books when they’re all a rehash of the last. 5-2 /sugar free/clever guts/ new 5-2/ fast 800/fast 800 easy/fast 800 Keto. The Keto recipe book by his wife has some meals where a portion is over 20g of carb - that’s not Keto. He’s always saying not to have sweetener yet it’s in his milkshakes. He says about processed foods and then brings out a processed powdered mushroom soup. Now it’s diet season he’s bloody everywhere. Am I the only one who doesn’t like him?

Or listen, or watch

ethelredonagoodday · 03/12/2023 10:31

His diets are well researched and supported by various academics. He's making money out of it, but hey ho, there's plenty of other business people I like considerably less!

Arggghhhhhhhh · 03/12/2023 10:41

I always confuse him with Tim Spector, but I think the latter is more credible.

Rubyupbeat · 03/12/2023 10:41

I have to admit, I do like his wifes recipes and yes they are not keto.
He also never practiced as a doctor, but went into journalism, but please correct me if I am wrong.

Datgal · 03/12/2023 10:44

I don't watch much TV or read the daily fail. So don't hear about him much.
However, a person at work (medical setting) told me about the fasting thing a few years ago. I pretty much didn't eat until lunch all my life. So, in that sense it wasn't too bad for me.
Me and my partner use the recipes in his book throughout the week, and eat 'normally' at the weekend. Really helps to keep costs down as we meal plan.
We have both lost over 10kg and have kept it off over a couple of years. He was borderline type 2. Not any more though.
We don't even see it as a 'diet' anymore. It's just what we eat. Lifestyle choices. Got me out of a lot of bad habits with carbs!
So, nothing bad to say here. But if someone annoys you, they annoy you. I can't stand prof Brian Cox haha. But I still wouldn't slate what he does.

mikado1 · 03/12/2023 10:44

The 800 cal thing is completely crazy but the meals themselves are really tasty. I just eat the 'not on a fast day' version, if I'm eating them, as part of 3 healthy no sugar meals a day. Like most recipe books, there are maybe 4 recipes I really like and the others are just meh.

Datgal · 03/12/2023 10:45

Someone made a good point above about hating other business people more.
What about gambling companies, Bezos, Murdoch empire. Lots of proper scumbags out there.

theduchessofspork · 03/12/2023 10:48

Same as Tim Spector really

They both did some perfectly fine work, and then decided they wanted to make lots of money flogging diet plans.

But that’s capitalism for you, and they both have kids and mortgages and all that.

rangan chatterjee, irritating though he can be, does do a better job of balance, but then he is much younger so isn’t at the stage when he wants to cash in fast

dazzlingdeborahrose · 03/12/2023 10:49

Just a small point. The blood sugar diet that's been shown to reverse type 2 diabetes in some cases is the result of decades of research by Professor Roy Taylor. I believe it's meant to be short term and undertaken under medical supervision. It's not a fad diet. And yes it could save the NHS millions so if Michael Moseley has raised the profile then good on him but it's from decades of hard research by academics and researchers.

totally annoying on radio 4, Dead Ringers do a great parody of him.

WillowTit · 03/12/2023 11:05

i like listening to his little programmes on the radio, they are only 15 minutes long so perfect for me

cansu · 03/12/2023 12:05

I lost a bit of respect when he started peddling the 800 cal 5.2 diet. The original 5.2 had some value in my view and he did have some science and behavioural research to back it. The 800 cal is just a very low cal diet and he now also promotes meal replacement stuff which is to my mind unhealthy and unsustainable. It puts his diet into the big pit of useless weight loss books.

MedSchoolRat · 03/12/2023 13:00

Scientifically a lot of what MM says is mildly crap. He confuses correlation with causation. To be fair, so do Spector & the van Tulleken guy plenty of professors & medical doctors (!) Moseley promotes ideas that are hugely more theory than proven. And he's not the only one doing that. I wouldn't mind so much if MM wasn't so featured on BBC so I encounter his trailers a lot, too. I've managed to avoid the book adverts.

MM is a banker who worked briefly as a psychiatrist before being a journalist (since forever). He doesn't give bad advice so much as he gives advice that isn't as credible & definitely helpful as MM implies it is.

GreekDogRescue · 03/12/2023 13:05

Him and that annoying permanently startled Dr Amir Khan do my nut in.
In fact all tv doctors are maddening, preening ego-driven fools.
I pity their patients -if they have time to see any.

GreekDogRescue · 03/12/2023 13:13

Flamingopinko · 11/01/2023 10:34

As if I hadn’t seen enough of his smug face! This pops up on my Facebook 😡
And honestly, a theatre show?! Wtf?

Ugh just no!
That smug, trust me I’m a doctor half smile.
Pass the sick bag!
Is he by any chance related to Oswald Mosley? 🧐

TheWayTheLightFalls · 03/12/2023 13:32

I agree with others - loved the 5:2 documentary, give or take the rest.

Justleaveitblankthen · 03/12/2023 23:57

I was listening to his podcasts just this evening while driving.
The ones about how being cold can be healthy/cold house ( his own is kept to 15°) cold showers/swimming etc.. It's interesting, but then I started to notice his speech pattern and it drove me barmy.

He takes constant gaps in his sentences. Every few words... Or so... Do you see... What I mean...
Had to switch off 😵‍💫

Melb67 · 14/12/2023 13:43

He gives me the total ick you have to listen to his bodily functions up close then him tell you with such delight and innocence how sucking a sweet on the left side of your mouth might increase your life span.. you know what I mean. Listening to his body up close is just too much when he's not even telling us things we don't know and he's not Tom Hardy

youngalistairyoung · 23/01/2024 14:09

I think everyone is right he is a self publicist and it's shameful that he doesn't come clean that he's not a GP at all. So it's good that I found here that. But all in all I think what he does is ok considering we get bombarded with take away ads every 15 minutes. I think I would rather listen to him than another pizza advert. What he has raised in his programs is the fact that we have a chronic health problem in the u.k. and many of our health problems can possibly be cured by changing your diet what's wrong with that?. Through his endless media coverage he has made people aware that we heading to disaster with the junk we eat and the lies we tell ourselves that we're eating a balanced diet.He hasn't done anything wrong by pointing out the facts when he's just one man against the food corporations that make millions from selling us rubbish. He has also taken down some of the myths and lies that are perpetuated on social media that everyone addicted to on what to eat which is just another way of selling another myth.

eveoha · 23/01/2024 14:31

I am irked that he has never tackled hearing loss - its very negative impact on mental health and precursor exacerbater of dementia - but then maybe that’s because there’s not a lot of £sd to be made ( apart from hearing aid dispensing) Also he looks as though he’s forgotten to put his dentures in - his mouth is like a cat’s rectum 👍☘️

chopinwaltz26 · 23/01/2024 14:35

He is a smugwump, no doubt about it and has a dreadful, smarmy smirk. However, I thought the programme yesterday evening was very well done.
The young couple in question appeared to have no idea. Fancy basically doubling your calorie intake (it seemed like virtually every day) without realising?
As for the money they were spending, the mind boggles.
I think it was important to highlight how fast/processed food impacts both physical and mental health.
It was similar to a Van Tulleken programme last year where identical twins ate the same number of calories, but one was eating "real food" and the was eating "junk food". The junk food eater's mood plummeted and she gained 2kg.

purplepencilcase · 23/01/2024 14:36

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 09/01/2023 11:30

Okay I got that wrong. I always though he was a GP who did paid gigs on BBC health docs.

Me too!

youngalistairyoung · 23/01/2024 14:42

And the £300 a week or month they were spending on take aways it beggars belief
