A new song?

Hoardasurass · 07/01/2023 17:32

Or people could learn how to pronounce them correctly in the 1st place

Oldfox · 07/01/2023 17:32

What

TroublesomeLuck · 07/01/2023 17:33

Assume the change in the way you say their name (certainly I think Hyundai have said that their name is going to be pronounced in the uk the same way it is as for the rest of the world)

Oh is that what this is about? I noticed Hyundai bring pronounced differently in the recent adverts and, as a Hyundai owner, was a bit surprised.

So how is IKEA A meant to go then?

viques · 07/01/2023 17:36

Oh I don’t mind pronouncing things correctly, it’s the pronunciation changing that sticks in my throat. 🤐

Ikea is supposed to be pronounced as follows:

ick-kay-yah (run together)

LimeCheesecake · 07/01/2023 17:39

Assume this is a thread about the phenomenon of companies with names that are tricky to pronounce if you speak English, “anglicising” their company name until they become established in English speaking markets then once “big enough” trying to correct their English speaking customers to the original way of saying the company name.

Id be interested to know which other companies have done this, allowed their business to be established with the “wrong” name in the UK/US/Australia etc - particularly those who don’t give a shit enough to have whole marketing campaigns about it!

TeenDivided · 07/01/2023 17:41

What about 'Nestles Milky Bar' ?

Allywill · 07/01/2023 17:41

but surely we always do this to a certain extent. i mean we say Paris not Pa ree (unless you are a dick).

TightFistedWozerk · 07/01/2023 17:43

Istr St David of Attenborough recently changed his prn of lichen to lit chin, I can't get used to that!

scronda · 07/01/2023 17:43

I think in the Scandinavian languages, or at the least the one I'm most familiar with, it's i-kea rather than eye-kea. Though I don't know anyone who says the former in this country. The IKEA advert has had a lot of people doubting themselves. What are we supposed to call it now?

zurala · 07/01/2023 17:44

I've looked it up and the Korean pronunciation is hee-yun...day with the first two syllables said quickly and a slight pause between second and third.
I don't know why this is such a big deal? Do you say it often OP?

viques · 07/01/2023 17:44

TeenDivided · 07/01/2023 17:41

What about 'Nestles Milky Bar' ?

This precisely. Those of us of a certain age can still sing the milky bar kid jingle when it was definitely nestles. And on the logo there was a picture of little birds in nest to confirm it.

I think that was always pronounced ness-lays milky bar, right?

LookItsMeAgain · 07/01/2023 17:45

I think that was always pronounced ness-lays milky bar, right?

No absolutely it wasn't in the 70s as far as my memory goes (happy to be disproved).

The Milky bar kid is strong and tough, but only the best is good enough, the creamiest milk the somethinist bar, nessals milky bar'.

DrCoconut · 07/01/2023 17:48

I don't get the Nestle thing because the proper pronunciation isn't exactly difficult. But the old ads prove that it was anglicised initially.

Floydthebarber · 07/01/2023 17:49

I swear everyone used to say Pew-jo for Purgeot, then it became Per-jo and now I keep hearing Pew-jo again! And I don't know what I should say!

viques · 07/01/2023 17:50

Bronnau · 07/01/2023 17:45

You're annoyed about being corrected?

Not really , I am more annoyed at the assumption made that I am unable to pronounce something properly in the first place.

Skoda as well , it’s now Shkoda 😂

Bagzzz · 07/01/2023 17:54

In Germany Lidl is pronounced Lee dl not li dl. Given the UK slogan “Lidl on Price” fits better with the pronunciation in UK I don’t they’ll change at the moment
