To think the new British Airways uniform (announced today) is awful?

The options are either a jumpsuit all in one or what is basically a suit and skirt. The males are fine with their suit but us the girls have been screwed over. Myself and pretty much every other crew member I know think it’s awful, we’ve been told if we don’t agree to wear it then our contracts will be terminated. Nothing feminine about it. Your fine wearing the suit if your a man but us females will look so manly it’s terrible!

It's REALLY ugly, and made worse by the men's being rather nice.

BUT you don't go to work to look 'feminine' or 'attractive', do you?

SproutsLCerVEGNoEgg · 06/01/2023 17:01

Beees · 06/01/2023 16:46

If we choose trousers it has to be the men’s trousers.

Seriously! That's bonkers that there isn't actually a pair of trousers included in the women's uniform options.

@bees

I think the OP's allowed to whinge about not liking her options, but I think she's either not very well informed or a touch disingenuous. I'm ex airline, it's pretty much compulsory to whinge about loads of stuff 🤣 & it's pretty normal to whinge about uniforms, no matter where you work! They're always designed by people who will never have to wear them!

You can please some of the people some of the time, but never all if they people all of the time.

the article says

Staff will be allowed to order different cuts - normal or skinny-fit trousers - and will be able to book a fitting so the uniform is more tailored

they're not just gonna make them wear mens trousers.

SpringsRightAroundTheCorner · 06/01/2023 17:02

Well it looks awful, it's ugly and frumpy and that red on the skirt lol oh dear. How did the designer think a woman was going to use an aircraft loo in a jumpsuit 🤣 will all those buttons have to be undone and the entire thing removed to wee. What ill though out uniform. "Just nipping the loo, back in 15, got my jumpsuit on today" lol

LunaRegis · 06/01/2023 17:03

Apart from the issue with the jumpsuit, it’s not as bad as some uniforms.

SoupDragon · 06/01/2023 17:03

Waterandair · 06/01/2023 16:43

The current uniform.

I bet loads of staff complained about that when it was introduced though.

TangledWebOfDeception · 06/01/2023 17:03

I absolutely love a jumpsuit. But what idiot thought that was a viable option for airline uniform, with no ladies' trouser option?? Never mind the feasibility for work, which is a valid issue; Many women find jumpsuits very tricky to wear, it's pretty much impossible to design one that's universally comfortable, fits reasonably well and looks even vaguely presentable.

caravanbuckie · 06/01/2023 17:04

I have read it over and I'm not convinced about this men's trousers for women thing at all.

The collection features a tailored three-piece suit for men with regular and slim fit style trousers and dress, skirt and trouser options for women, as well as a modern jumpsuit

This really does indicate women's trousers, separate to the men's 2 fit options.

aliloandabanana · 06/01/2023 17:05

Anything that manages to make the model look lumpy or fat isn't good! The skirt is awful and jumpsuits really only look good on certain shapes. I'd hate it if I had to wear any of those to work! The dress is the best option, but button-up dresses don't suit/fit many figures...

It could just as easily mean they get the option to wear trousers, but the trousers will be from the men's collection.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 06/01/2023 17:06

Is it just me or does the dress remind anyone else of Victoria Wood in Dinnerladies?

Maytodecember · 06/01/2023 17:07

Skirt looks horrible with white blouse and tie, really ugly look.
Same skirt with dark top, looks like a dress, looks better.
Jumpsuit, not sure how practical it is on long haul, tiny plane loos etc..
Friend works for BA ( not cabin crew) and the “ accept it or you’re sacked” attitude seems to apply to everything.

It could, I'm just not convinced it does.

SproutsLCerVEGNoEgg · 06/01/2023 17:09

People need to read the actual article, facts help.

Mrsherdwick · 06/01/2023 17:09

That is truly hideous. My last uniform was scrubs - tailored to fit men. I bought my own to wear with an elasticated waist instead of the drawstring waist. So much more comfortable and practical.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 06/01/2023 17:10

To me, they look tacky & old-fashioned. The skirt is a particularly dreadful look, with or without the jacket. The jumpsuit is just impractical.

The little red bits everywhere remind me of Almodovar's 'I'm So Excited' dance routine.

stopthebarking · 06/01/2023 17:11

I'd never wear a jumpsuit, but the dress is nice. I don't think the red in the skirt is odd, personally. Maybe a bit old-fashioned, but not in a bad way.

It does seem strange to not allow the women a non-skirt option that isn't a horribly impractical jumpsuit, though!

SoupDragon · 06/01/2023 17:11

it looks like a dress because it is a dress.

emmathedilemma · 06/01/2023 17:11

I saw this on the bbc website and all I could think of was trying to wrangle your way in and out of a jumpsuit in an aircraft toilet!! They’re also notoriously difficult to get to fit well and they’re not the most flattering of items.

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 06/01/2023 17:11

Jumpsuits are a pretty terrible idea for uniform. As well as the obvious toilet issue, people's torsos come in different lengths independent of their height and dress size, so unless the jumpsuit is huge and baggy it'll look terrible on half the staff or give them wedgies. I see it says they can alter things to fit, but it's just giving you one more way for something to look bad.

diddl · 06/01/2023 17:12

Is the jumpsuit the "trousers for women" then?

Movinghouseatlast · 06/01/2023 17:12

The skirt is particularly awful and puts me in mind of my Mothercare uniform c.1983.

stopthebarking · 06/01/2023 17:13

Ah, just saw that there is a trousers option for women. In that case, it's fine, imo.

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/01/2023 17:13

If the trousers are in fact men’s, YANBU at all. In that case, I would be asking how they expect women to deal with their period (which lasts for about 1/4 of the time you’re working) in a jumpsuit. And how would you be expected to manage changing if you got period blood on said jumpsuit. Plus the added amount of time required.

If there are ladies’ trousers, YABU. It’s a uniform. As long as it’s comfortable and practical, fine. In this day and age, a bit of stretch would be good.

ArabellaScott · 06/01/2023 17:14

I saw this and have been wondering how on earth you get out of a jumpsuit to go to the loo in a tiny aeroplane toilet.

Suboptimalsitch · 06/01/2023 17:14

Who on earth designs a jumpsuit as cabin crew uniform?
Answer= A man who is never going to try to go to negotiate undoing it while not letting it touch a filthy toilet floor all within the confines of a broom cupboard.

It’s bloody ridiculous. So impractical and is going to look unflattering on many. It reminds me of when Ally Capellino revamped the Brownie uniform. His cullotes and the sash that attached to the waistband was utterly impractical and complicated and unflattering on many girls. I think the dress is the least awful OP. But the rest are pretty awful.
