To regret taking on dog and potentially rehome?

I’ve wanted a dog since my eldest took a huge interest and love for dogs.

I thought it would be lovely for the children. It has been.

I knew I wanted a dog that wasn’t a puppy. I took on a 2 year old dog asked lots and lots of questions etc before taking her on. One of the biggest things for me was bypassing the puppy stage and not having to toilet train etc. The toilet training was a big thing for me. I didn’t want to do it.

The children adore her. My daughter cried when we bought her home. She’s a very sweet loving girl and follows us everywhere.

But I feel the previous owners covered up a lot of things. They didn’t tell us she was in season when we drove miles to get her, they forgot to tell us that she only eats a certain brand of subscription food otherwise she vomits like crazy. The promised and promised she was toilet trained…..

SHE IS NOT.

It’s driving me to despair. I have health anxiety and OCD and this dog I love her and so do the kids but it’s making me ill. My anxiety levels are sky high and i’m vomiting as a result and am in tears every day.
I feel like i’ve ruined our family dynamics even though the kids adore her.
A but I feel like i’m stuck with her now because I can’t bear the thought of breaking my children’s heart they are 3&8.

She is just weeing and pooing everywhere and does not understand going outside for toilets at all. She just stands there. I’ve tried everything.

AIBU to want to rehome her?

I feel so low about all of this. I deeply regret getting her.

@Emotionalsupportviper , it's a very distinctive looking one, with a high risk of deafness and allergies. They are stubborn and will try to go through something. I'd love one, but they don't live long, about 9 yrs. It's a breed native to the UK if that helps. They come in different colours, and the deafness is far more likely in the colour I want.
There have been famous film ones including a Charles Dickens one. The dog in the book would probably not been the same one.

MerryChristmasToYou · 05/01/2023 22:34

Sorry to be so vague but I've wanted one for decades. If i look at a photo i want one so much.

They're a smashing dog!

There's a standard parti-coloured bitch who visits her grannie near us (they live dahn sarf somewhere), and although I've never been a fan of parti's, she's stunning - B&W, border-collie type patterning - v.unusual - and such an intelligent, sweet-natured girl.

Yes, this one was black. Originally I thought it must be some sort of doodle because of its cute curly coat - I had only ever seen poodles clipped into a pattern. So beautiful.

Just say Dalmation

Surely an English Bull Terrier?

Much better guess
My comment looked a bit snarky without the ? I meant to put , apologies

Cherry60 · 06/01/2023 10:34

@Hoppinggreen nah I didn't think you were being snarky 🙂

nudnikit · 06/01/2023 10:46

Have you seen a behaviourist before rehoming? I've adopted an adult dog who had never lived in a house and she was house trained in days. It's strange for an adult dog, weeks in, to be still messing in the house and you should get some professional help before giving up. This could be solvable.

I do sympathise with the stress this causes. Our last dog was having a lot of accidents towards the end of his life and it was really hard to be constantly cleaning up poo and pee, however much we loved him (which we did).

That’s an awful lot of words to just say ‘Dalmatian’ 🙄

See, now that IS snarky (and probably wrong)

MerryChristmasToYou · 06/01/2023 12:19

I'm trying to figure out what colours Dalmatians come in. The film I saw must have been on a black and white telly.

Maybe do a bit more research on the breed of dogs you’re wanting before committing?

MerryChristmasToYou · 06/01/2023 12:38

@Onebelow , I don't particularly want a dalmatian. I can't recall a dalmatian in a Charles Dickens novel, or many films that feature them, and as far as I know dalmatians aren't known for being stubborn with a tendency to go through things not round them.

As for trying to find a fuck to give, you obviously do, because you continue to post after someone has pointed out that your posts have an unpleasant tone.

Thank you all for your replies both insanely harsh and those who were very common ground. I’ve avoided this thread today as I have been very unwell. I’ve never felt like such an utter vile human in all my life and so avoiding this thread today was good for my health. We still have our dog. Who I would like to add came to us in THE FIRST FEW DAYS OF NOVEMBER. Not CHRISTMAS.

For anyone interested in an update, I will post in a few days.

Id like to add of course I know people are harsh in AIBU threads. People of course get kicks out of it. I am not in a good place but luckily I am hardened to words. Please think before attacking as for some people, it could be the straw that breaks the camels back.

Our dog is safe, being given lots of attention and has done really well today with toileting.

Pets are supposed to bring you comfort and enjoyment.
You do not have to keep an animal in your home that defecates and urinates uncontrollably. It is unhygienic and unreasonable.
You have done everything you can to make this work and there is no obligation to keep on with this absurd situation.
The dog needs to go.
Anyone offering to take the dog needs to be made fully aware of the issue and have the capability and premises to cope with it. If they don't have proper accommodation for an incontinent dog, then don't let it go to them, no matter how well intentioned. The only option may be euthanasia, if a suitable home can't be found.
You might have a legal claim against the person who sold you the dog if it was reported to you as house trained.

I can’t help being smart. Nobody likes a dumb ass either but here you are 😉

Laiste · 06/01/2023 12:42

@MerryChristmasToYou Is it an English Bull terrier? Oliver Twist?

I'm fascinated as to why you wouldn't say!

Redebs · 06/01/2023 12:43

Onebelow · 05/01/2023 12:49

This irks me so much. People should realise what taking on a dog means. She could be perfectly toilet trained but then get an infection or illness or just when she gets old, and that goes out the window. So you’d just get rid? What if your child had an accident at home, do you get rid of them too? People should THINK before they take on a dog.

Don't compare a dog to a child

It’s really not that strange for a French bulldog to pee in the house. It’s the opposite of strange - quite common.

Don't compare a dog to a child

Why?

MerryChristmasToYou · 06/01/2023 12:49

@Laiste,You got it. Wouldn't say as I thought it might out me (name of a character in the book). I blame The Incredible Journey. I have also always fancied a siamese cat but not to the same degree.

@amberstonelove , be careful what films you let your DC see.

Laiste · 06/01/2023 12:52

I feel for you OP.
You've made a mistake (not doing your research) but you don't deserve a public flogging or anything!

I hope you manage to train your dog and have many happy years with her :)

It would be nice if this thread (and others like it) serves to inform anyone else about the pitfalls of dog ownership/rescue before they fall into the ''what the fuck have i done?'' guilt/regret trap. Because that is a shit place to be in.

It would be awful if the aggressive posts here put anyone else who is struggling in this way off posting.

MerryChristmasToYou · 06/01/2023 12:53

@amberstonelove , sorry for slightly derailing the thread last night and hope things are OK for you, your DC and your Ddog today.

Laiste · 06/01/2023 13:02

@MerryChristmasToYou ah!
My old Dad always wanted one of those too. DM wasn't keen so they got a Sealyham instead. Part British Bull.

My dog desire growing up was a great dane. When we moved to the countryside i got one. Then got another! Beautiful dogs. :)

I strongly recommend Siamese cats.

I also loved this film, maybe we should be careful what films we let our dc watch.
