Why are some people on here so horrible?

Wheeesht3 · 02/01/2023 22:58

has anyone else noticed an increase in certain posters who consistently comment with horrible, insulting and deliberately unhelpful things?

im not talking about posts where the OP can’t accept the truth, or where they don’t like to be told they are being unreasonable. I’m talking about certain commenters consistently posting horrible comments. You can recognise it by their username in some cases.

does MN deal with them? There’s several posters I can think of off the top of my head who are horrible everytime they comment, and half the time their comments end up being deleted for being horrible. Maybe it’s just me but I’ve definitely noticed an increase in it recently.

Think about the broad range of people you know in real life. Some are fabulous, some are horrors. Many are fabulous with a side helping of mean at times. It’s the variety of human nature

Tessisme · 03/01/2023 13:12

I think there are some really horrible posters on here. Posters you know are going to say something confrontational as soon as you see their username. And posters who just make some dry, dismissive, unhelpful remark when someone has asked for advice or just wants to strike up a discussion. Whether there is more of this than, say, ten years ago, I don't know for sure, but I'm noticing it more and have been here about 15 years. But we've all met people like this in real life. They are usually people we are thrown into a situation with not through choice, like work colleagues or neighbours, rather than our friends. Best to ignore them and not let them get to you.

Also, I definitely think using the word 'fuck' can come across as aggressive. People use it deliberately for emphasis. I'm not offended by it, but I can see why some people in a vulnerable situation asking for advice, might feel intimidated by its often unnecessary use. I don't use it often myself - more in a stubbed my toe kind of way than anything else - and am always a bit surprised when people just sling it into sentences. I don't personally know anyone who does this in real life.

You’re one of the worst offenders 😂

Me? How??

Ah goody the (now daily) "why is everyone so horrid" thread.
If you want flowers and unicorns I think there are forums for that.

Oh great :)! Any suggestions or links please? I've been looking for a forum like that.😀

The irony is strong indeed on this thread.

i would say several posts banging on about why I’ve NC is badgering, especially when it’s of little relevance to the thread. Ditto with examples when it’s been asked several times already so I’m not sure why others had to keep asking aswell.

So you’re basically inviting me to explain again why I pointed out that you name changed specifically for this thread.

And then when I do explain, you accuse me of banging on about it 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Teder · 03/01/2023 13:40

MN is a reflection of the real world but the screen means people are more forthright.
I think “horrible” is subjective. Calling someone a cunt because they are anxious about their health and are considering A&E - well, I’d automatically assume that person is horrible. There are some grey areas. “Why did you have children with this man?” posts are a bit confusing because the person can’t go back in time.

PrincessNakatomi · 03/01/2023 13:55

I’m on another thread right now where someone has been told by someone saying ‘You must be the one they are discussing in the other thread on here’, most likely referring to this thread.

This is the kind of behaviour you invite with threads like these, OP.

Like I’ve said a few times, people make decisions to say these things as adults and thats up to them, you can’t blame other people for what you choose to say as an adult. Refer back to my previous example re stealing from a shop.

They’ve turned into a pile on because of certain posters! This thread wasn’t about me NC, or the millions of other threads apparently like this, or posters trying to pin stuff back on me. That’s what’s made this a pile on- nothing else

I agree, OP. You're getting the usual bait and switch tactics. Soon it's no longer going to be about your thread topic but about you.

Exactly! I’m so glad at least someone else agrees with me!

Let's deviate to something more pleasant then and not engage in negativity. I think there have been positive posts here too but people tend to reply back more to negative posts. Maybe it's for attention? I broke the ice with a joke in one post. Mind you I was called immature and pathetic, so not the best example...🤔

Kind of like what people say when they incite violent acts. After all, you can’t blame them for other people choose to do, right…

Definitely aggressive if aimed at someone, if we want to be totally honest.

I'd stop responding to off-topic posts if I were you. To derail and cause a bunfight or make it a TAAT so that it will be deleted might be the goal.

That’s a massive leap.

why can’t people take responsibility for what they post? I haven’t incited or invited anything. Maybe you should blame MN for even existing, after all, they’re inviting people to post horrible things.

Going back to my previous example (again) how do you manage not to shoplift in shops? They’re inviting it, having all the stuff there for people just to take

What is TAAT

LifesNotEnidBlyton · 03/01/2023 14:23

Then. There's the snarky sarcastic comments people inside on putting while offering no useful thoughts whatsoever. Sometimes it's not even that most would disagree with the sentiment behind what they say, it's just that it's said in such a way you know they're just trying to be a dick.

Such as....

OP might put something like "Went to lunch with the girls from work and there was a disagreement about who should pay etc" commenter 1 "Why on earth are there girls at your place of work? Have you informed HR?" commenter 2 "Well obviously you should pay if you're taking girls out to dinner. Unless obviously you're talking about women?".

or else

OP My daughters Minnie has been really sore when she's goes to the bathroom. Have tried Bephanphen but it hasn't helped. Any ideas?

Commenter 1 I've absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

Commenter 2 "It's her vagina or labia that's sore.".

Just why? Even for those who agree with the overall thinking and might have eye rolled at the language what is the need, apart from to be a smug and unhelpful person, to comment only that, with no actual advice even alongside the pedantic answer?
