Why are some people on here so horrible?

Wheeesht3 · 02/01/2023 22:58

has anyone else noticed an increase in certain posters who consistently comment with horrible, insulting and deliberately unhelpful things?

im not talking about posts where the OP can’t accept the truth, or where they don’t like to be told they are being unreasonable. I’m talking about certain commenters consistently posting horrible comments. You can recognise it by their username in some cases.

does MN deal with them? There’s several posters I can think of off the top of my head who are horrible everytime they comment, and half the time their comments end up being deleted for being horrible. Maybe it’s just me but I’ve definitely noticed an increase in it recently.

But the point is someone else can pitch in and name names and say ‘Oh, do you mean xxx or xxx’. Once you start a thread like this, you’re basically inviting people to share names and make it a TAATs.

And who has said your post isn’t genuine?

Ok, but I didn’t do that? And the reason I didn’t do that is because I disagree with that. We are all adults and I’m not responsible for what others post, so if other people do that I’m absolutely not responsible or inviting it thank you very much. You can blame the person who chose - as an adult - to post it, not me.

and by the way, you might have noticed other people insisting I share examples, which I declined because it would make it a TAAT and the other person wouldn’t necessarily see it and be able to defend themselves.

I never understand why people moan about talk forums
i joined one once
didn't like it
de regged and left
job done
i then found another that was more my cup of tea

Wheeesht3 · 03/01/2023 12:31

purpleflies · 03/01/2023 12:28

No one suggested you weren't genuine @Wheeesht3 threads like this are started all the time and they always turn into pile ons as you can see.

They’ve turned into a pile on because of certain posters! This thread wasn’t about me NC, or the millions of other threads apparently like this, or posters trying to pin stuff back on me. That’s what’s made this a pile on- nothing else

OP posts:
Wheeesht3 · 03/01/2023 12:33

But I’ve already got a few names in my mind now, so may others. What’s to stop someone else naming people?

Well that’s up to you isn’t it? What’s to stop you doing anything that’s right or wrong? Maybe the fact you’re an adult and can take responsibility for what you post?

if you go into a shop and there’s things beside the door and no security- what’s stopping you steal it, after all, the shop are just inviting it by having the stuff beside the door and no security? Is that there fault then if you choose to steal it? Nope

And yes, there was people insinuating that this post wasn’t genuine. Badgering me for NC, and for not seeing the other posts and then basically accusing me of lying because I said I hasn’t seen them, suggesting all these posts are linked and part of some campaign.

OP posts:
SadOrWickedFairy · 03/01/2023 12:36

@Wheeesht3 you started a thread and are talking about a person or several persons who post on MN and describing them as horrible:

Why are some people on here so horrible?

Your thread title - some people on here are horrible in your opinion.

has anyone else noticed an increase in certain posters who consistently comment with horrible, insulting and deliberately unhelpful things?

Part of your opening post again referring to 'certain posters'.

There’s several posters I can think of off the top of my head who are horrible everytime they comment, and half the time their comments end up being deleted for being horrible.

Several posters you have in mind, half their posts are apparently deleted so in those cases MNHQ agree their posts broke the Talk Guidelines in other cases they didn't. Their posts wouldn't have been deleted for being 'horrible' they would have been deleted for breaking the Talk Guidelines.

It seems it is okay for you to label posters 'horrible' in the belief that they don't know they are being labelled as such, I think that is disingenuous of you - you are talking about posters behind their backs which is imo is a pretty horrible thing to do.

purpleflies · 03/01/2023 12:38

I don't know the reasons here, and I'm not blaming anyone, but they always follow the same pattern and end in a pile on. The OP nearly always name changes too, with good reason. Better not to name names or threads or it will be deleted.

But when you’re colluding with posters and saying ‘We’re probably talking about the same poster’, that’s exactly what you’re doing.

And the thread is now already a TAAT, or didn’t you notice?

No one has ‘insisted’ you share examples. I commented that you NC’ed for this thread specifically and therefore no one can see threads where you’ve been sworn at. No one is denying your right to NC, so I can only see as a cynical attempt on your part to cry troll hunting and shut down debate.

I’m not even bothering with this anymore, you know what I’m meaning so stop acting disingenuous. I’ve given some examples of some horrible comments I’ve recieved and they were more than horrible, so I’ll refer to them as such thanks. Other people (some of whom have commented on this thread!) have stood up for me in the past in fact.

You know exactly what I’m talking about- trolls, deliberately horrible posters- so I can’t be bothered explaining myself 100 times to someone who wants to pick me apart on the last day of the bank holidays and clearly isn’t going to acknowledge anything I’m saying

OP posts:
AGoodDayForSomebodyElseToDie · 03/01/2023 12:44

It's always worse around the holidays - more trolling and, sadly, more people who are just miserable with their circumstances and take it out on other people. It's not just mumsnet - it happens on most forums.

SadOrWickedFairy · 03/01/2023 12:46

I asked for examples of whether it was particular thread subjects or particular boards where these 'certain posters' post, to see if there was something I was missing because I have not seen what the OP and the many others who have complained in a similar vein are describing on the threads or boards I frequent.

Like I said, people can take personal responsibility for what they post, and if they can’t then they shouldn’t be here. You can’t blame other people if you make a conscious decision to name or identify someone. That was your decision and nobody made you.

yeah, people have repeatedly asked for examples, I’ll post some of them below

Let’s have some examples, hard to judge without knowing specifics?

What name calling? You need to tell us what you’ve seen that has sparked this off otherwise the thread is a bit meaningless.

Examples would be good because I don't see what you or any of the other many threads on this are describing,

it’s not a TAAT, it’s a thread about MN in general. This isn’t about any specific thread and can’t be linked to any specific thread.

OP posts:
Pyri · 03/01/2023 12:48

That’s great you haven’t seen it but i and many others have. Maybe it’s the particular board at a specific time we’re going on and maybe there’s just been more trolls and by chance we’ve been on when they’ve been active. I don’t know. I’ve given some examples above and other commenters have too

So all those people asked once, not ‘repeatedly’. No one has ‘insisted’.

You keep making cryptic references to me (‘NC badgering 😂), so I thought you were saying I was insisting you provide examples, and I certainly didn’t insist.

SadOrWickedFairy · 03/01/2023 12:53

So now they are 'trolls', if they are report to MNHQ and they will be banned. I am not picking you apart, you believe it is okay to start a thread about 'certain posters' to discuss them behind their backs, I don't. If you have an issue with those posters or their posts take it up with them directly or via MNHQ.

What has the last day of the Bank Holidays got to do with anything? I have acknowledged what you are saying, I disagree with some of it and, funnily enough, have the right to do so. I have not called you names or been 'horrible' to you unless you count disagreement with some of what you have said and done as 'horrible'.

purpleflies · 03/01/2023 12:54

You don't need to provide examples, some people have said they know what you mean.

girlmom21 · 03/01/2023 12:54

Judging by that sentence alone, OP's probably back at school tomorrow.

No I dont think you’ve been horrible at all. But I think some posters are deliberately missing the point of the thread. Not sure why several comments about me NC or about other posts like this is relevant- half the thread is taken up with this now. I’m just going to focus on the other half of the thread with people who either agree and have noticed similar, or disagree and haven’t noticed it but aren’t repeatedly asking me why I’ve name changed, suggesting in part of some campaign and tearing apart everything I’ve said.

Yes very much so. They swan in on any opportunity, particularly someone asking if they're being unreasonable with a genuine curiosity. They seem to know who each other are as well and aim to put do each other with the quick, sharp, one-liners.
Also they act as if certain natural human behaviours are not natural. Like we all feel competitive or a bit envious at times, but my god if you show any of that on mumsnet you get treated like an absolute idiot.
I think they must be very unhappy people who clearly wouldn't care if their kids/family were treated as they treat others!?

SugarplumFairyyy · 03/01/2023 12:59

Maybe it's because people keep engaging back and forth. People won't want to always agree and people won't always like what you say. If you don't like it leave and if it's personal, report it. if it's intolerable deacticlvate account job done 😅

i would say several posts banging on about why I’ve NC is badgering, especially when it’s of little relevance to the thread. Ditto with examples when it’s been asked several times already so I’m not sure why others had to keep asking aswell.

People just relish being behind the anonymity of a username, especially because you can name change on here so get away with things far more. I've had some absolute howlers of comments directed at me, you just have to learn to laugh at them, or ignore.

You’re one of the worst offenders 😂

I think that's wise. Going forward you can report any personal attacks to Mumsnet and avoid areas like AIBU.
