There is no god

Inspired by another thread … I was surprised by the level of atheism professed … as I always though I was in a tiny, tiny minority.
would be interested to see the MN response.

IABU - there is a god
IANBU - there is no god

It’s odd to read the comment above about ‘educated’ people not believing in God. The most intelligent and well educated people I have ever known are religious and believe in God. The people I go to church with are a huge variety of people from every walk of life: two engineers, an accountant, several lawyers, successful business owners, a scientist, multiple teachers, a music producer, a university lecturers, a psychologist. So many different backgrounds. They’re all extremely educated and intelligent people.

malificent7 · 03/01/2023 05:55

Paganism is not harmful to women...it reveres them and the planet. However, like most religions it relies on communal ceremonies which are a bit group thinky for me.

Mumsnet attracts, typically, a more educated demographic who have been taught to think critically. So while the 88% atheist statistic I have just been shown does seem high, bear in mind that won't be typical of the population as a whole.

PS Of course there's no god. Or God. But fairy stories were very good for keeping the populace where you wanted them.

😂Think critically.😂
Yet academics discuss the concept of a God vigorously. There are plenty of reasoned arguments and debates amongst the world's cleverest minds on the existence of a God.

malificent7 · 03/01/2023 06:15

Why does God have to be a "hin". Why not a they/them or a She/ her?

fridaynight · 03/01/2023 06:25

Yes there’s a God. Personally I’ve seen God transform my life from hopelessness to hope and purpose. I’m not into dead religion neither was Jesus. I hope that everyone encounters the incredible love of God. We’ve seen him heal and transform lives, I believe we’re body mind and spirit, the devil comes to steal kill and destroy but Jesus came to give fullness of life. Try an Alpha course if you’ve got an enquiring mind as it gives a clearer representation of God and helpful for making a decision one way or the other.

loislovesstewie · 03/01/2023 06:53

So if there is a god why does s/he decide to only help some people not others?

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 03/01/2023 06:57

I suspect that there's a very large group of people who feel that there Is a spiritual dimension to the universe, but reject the idea of a omniscient and omnipotent creator and judge. So, not completely atheist, not really agnostic. Spiritual but not religious.

Rollin · 03/01/2023 07:01

@NestingSparrow What makes your interpretation of the bible valid over someone who believes it’s the literal word of god?
I read a post like yours and honestly think it reads like you’re mentally ill.

Rollin · 03/01/2023 07:03

As in, imagine taking the word
’god’ out and replacing it with ‘aliens’ and people would think that’s crackers.
believe what you want, I believe what I do, and there’s room in the world for all of that to co-exist peacefully without threat to each other

Amen to this.

‘Try an Alpha course’

I won’t be trying any course that are being gay as something to be ‘cured’ of, thanks.

it may be okay for straight people to ignore that but if there is a then he/she/they made all humans, even the gay ones.

So true. Evangelical and so angry.

Hard not to read the post ValK wrote and not feel a bit angry.

Haven’t read the whole thread but all those who don’t believe in God do you celebrate Christmas and if so why? Even though Jesus wasn’t born in December am curious as to why you would observe what many consider to be the date of his birth

We celebrate it partly due to it being part of our culture growing up but we don’t celebrate any religious aspects of it, our Christmas tends to focus on the pagan roots, it’s about celebrating what’s to come (obviously we don’t celebrate the sun being reborn but we look forward to the days getting lighter and longer and a fresh new year) with family and enjoy the time we get to spend together away from school and work, eating, drinking gifting etc we enjoy all of it.
The nights are cold and long and we enjoy the coziness of Christmas time, hot chocolate, watching movies etc, the children’s excitement over Santa visiting, it just feels like a special time of year for us personally.

Rollin · 03/01/2023 09:06

If it weren’t for Christianity we’d still be celebrating the winter solstice properly - some cities and towns still do. They nicked it for ‘Christmas’ To get the pagans in line.

I consider myself to be very spiritual, but that centres around people and nature, and more importantly doesn’t impact on the civil rights or morals of other people.

‘BabyOnBoard90 · Yesterday 23:41
Atheism has become rather evangelical ironically’

has it though? I’m not trying to convert anyone to my way of thinking. I’m not trying to stop you from going to church, believing in god, sending your child to a church school.
But I don’t think Christian’s ( or other believers) should be ‘preaching’ against gay people, saying who can and can get married, have access to healthcare, contraception and abortion, or bring religion into politics.

So you’re trying to forbid religious people from having freedom of speech? I don’t agree with everything you have said and neither do most Christians. But I respect everyone’s right to freedom of speech.

Well because in scripture He is referred to as a male figure - a father, a ‘He’, a ‘Him’. Does it matter? If He was referred to as ‘mother’ people would be complaining about that too__

Weighing up smart meters makes my partner manic & grumble when it reads above £5 in a day when washtub has been used !

ErrolTheDragon · 03/01/2023 09:29

So you’re trying to forbid religious people from having freedom of speech?
No, that's not what she said at all. Twisting words isn't clever or 'moral'.

loislovesstewie · 03/01/2023 09:31

I object to people knocking on the door and trying to engage me in a ridiculous conversation in order to persuade me that their views are right. I don't feel the need to knock on their doors to persuade them that atheism is the way to go. You are free to believe what you want but don't have the right to interfere with my life and my disbelief. I've recently emailed the JWs and told them to desist from contacting me as I'm so fed up with them, I've told them verbally several times, I should not have to keep telling them.

noisemachine · 03/01/2023 09:32

I have no idea, I'm very much agnostic. I don't believe in a hold as such but I am also not convinced on atheism.

malificent7 · 03/01/2023 06:15

Because man made god in his own image, the Judaeo-Christian one at any rate. It's so anthropocentric and self-serving. A god who can fit into our limited human minds.

noisemachine · 03/01/2023 09:32

In a god that should have said

This view is horrendous- sex isn’t just about having children and there is nothing wrong with being gay.
