To not pay for a dog my mum has found on preloved

StarDolphins · 31/12/2022 17:04

I’ll start by saying my mum loves animals & has always really looked after their needs 100%. She would starve to feed them etc.

However, she’s a 77yo hoarder who is bound to 1 room (only moves from the bed to the commode 1m away). She’s had 2 strokes, heart bypass, diabetes & COPD amongst others.

she has 1 dog left out of 5 so I said when she goes, I will take existing dog if he outlived her as she got him before she was immobile. This poor dog is fat (loved, but far too unhealthy) she has a dog walker everyday.

My Ainu - she’s text me to ask me to pay for a dog off preloved out of her money. This dog is 2.5 hours away but no mention of how she will get it. She’s bombarding me now asking me to reply/pay.

would I be unreasonable to find’ an excuse not to do this?, I feel so heartbroken for this dog, I have a dog so I can only commit to taking 2 when my Mum dies & this poor dog will have such a boring life in that horrible house. Loving it won’t be enough & I feel so stressed & upset. I want to go absolutely mad but she will say it’s her money etc & the dog will be loved!

Just refuse if she says she no longer wants you to help with her money agree and tell her social services will do it instead they won't let her have a bloody dog either

Theunamedcat · 31/12/2022 17:30

There is no dog the dog has gone

She’ll have been in contact with these people. How will I have evidence of no dog? I’ve told her hundreds of times not to go on these shorty sites & rescue only but I’m pretty sure she knows no rescue would rehome to her in her situation.

i wanted a lovely night with my DD & DDog & potty Pam strikes again now with all this🙄

OMG it could have a million & one behavoural problems..

Theunamedcat · 31/12/2022 17:34

And I know you won't leave a dog to suffer but getting her a dog in this environment will be making a dog suffer

Opp · 31/12/2022 17:34

How is a second hand dog £3700?? It might well be stolen and by buying it you'll be encouraging them to steal another one. It's suspicious that they want to sell to a single lady (Ie not be confronted by a man). If she insists she wants another dog there's plenty of lovely old lonely dogs who's owners have died that need a home

labazslovesliving · 31/12/2022 17:35

sounds like at some time or maybe more than once she has been scammed; someone needs to get the power of attorney before it's too late.
I love dogs and would have loads if I let my heart rule my head but the 2 rescues we have go together well so that is that
I feel sorry for you you will end up with its care ie vets etc not to mention taking it in, in the end, to send it to a shelter would be awful

Do you have the advert? Call them and tell them potty pam has no money they need to block her and sell to someone else

The dog is £300 - god only knows what the £3700 is for - either a tax or a car!

You need to say no and be blunt about why. If she truly loved animals she wouldn’t be considering doing this to another dog.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 31/12/2022 17:40

Bless her. I sympathise. I scan the internet for new pets when I'm feeling down and I have hoarding tendencies so often I use collecting stuff to fill an emotional need. I would go super practical and try to talk her out of it on the basis of it not being fair on the dog. If she's a true animal lover then this will get through to her.

This is the thing, I’m going to end up potentially with my 2 pets, her 2 pets & my DD, working, all squeezed in to our tiny (but lovely!)house, driving about in my tiny Mini full of pets!

She has sent you a link. You contact the owners on Preloved. You say your Mum has been in touch with them and wants you to facilitate the purchase. Please can you have a chant on the phone? When you speak to them you explain your mother is bed-bound and already has an overweight dog, so you have concerns about her ability to manage this extra dog who has not met the existing one. See how they respond. If they suggest that this is not the buyer they want then they will withdraw from the sale quietly. If they push to have the money then you can assume they are fraudsters and you tell you Mum that, having spoken to them, you think there is no dog ant it is a scam.

I might say this to her, if you really love animals then you won’t do it. It’s cruel on the pets & me.

She won’t listen I fear- years ago she got a horse(I was against it) then she couldn’t look after it & roped in her poor boyfriend at the time to go up to see to the horse everyday.

Shes a pet hoarder😢

This is what I would do too.

FrostyFifi · 31/12/2022 17:45

Oh god OP what a dreadful situation for you.

2reefsin30knots · 31/12/2022 17:48

Maybe the RSPCA would send somebody out to talk to her about it.

whynotwhatknot · 31/12/2022 17:49

tell the owners she cant look after a dog shes too ill and tell anyone else she tries to buy a dog off of

i wish there were stricter rules about selling animals

my friends dad kept getting dogs he couldnt even walk got other people to do it0he finally stopped after his last dog died its so unfair

Claudia84 · 31/12/2022 17:49

OMG what kind of irresponsible person sells a dog on preloved?!!

NewMoonPhase · 31/12/2022 17:50

Can you report to preloved and get the post removed?

2bazookas · 31/12/2022 17:54

Ask for the contact details.

Contact the seller and cancel, say your mother is too disabled to care for a dog.
Tell mother you contacted seller and it's gone to someone else.

She might enjoy one of those "breathing" stuffed animals for dementia patients
which she can cuddle on her lap or bed.

google "stuffed toys for dementia"

Biscuitandacuppa · 31/12/2022 17:54

I’ve found the advert and the seller clearly says the dog isn’t consistently house trained and needs a special owner. This says to me (along with the requirement for a female only owner) that this dog has some significant behavioural issues. How in earth would your mother cope if the dog was defecating in the house!

I would reply to her that it might be her money but that you won’t facilitate what would be tantamount to animal cruelty. Has she had her mental capacity assessed recently? Because her actions are not those of a rational adult.

User57713 · 31/12/2022 17:56

I would say "no, you're not able to look after another dog, I am not getting involved in this at all, not even just to get the cash for you."

But that's easy for me to say, she's not my mum.
