11 Year old DS vapes when with his Dad

thelintofthesnow · 31/12/2022 16:43

My 11 year DS who is in Y7, sees his Dad every other weekend, well it has come out that his Dad vapes now, which because he is a fully grown adult is fine but what I am so angry about is that my ex has bought DS a vape and he regularly vapes when at his Dad's house.

Should I tell my ex that unless he stops DS vaping I cannot send him to his house? What would social services services do regarding the situation if ex refuses to do the sensible and right thing, which knowing him is the more likely outcome to happen.

There are loads of websites detailing how nicotine harms developing babies.

yes E cigarettes are safer than smoking in pregnancy but they aren’t risk free

As it's illegal to obtain vapes for children ( see previous posts for detail), I'd report to the police. I would inform safeguarding lead at school, and tell ex that DS won't be going there again unless he can ensure that he will not be given harmful substances. What else is in the vape..next step is CBD!
Also get DS to doctor and flood him with info about the dangers of vaping.

Queens University study - “A recurring theme of this study is the similarity in the effect of exposure to cigarette smoke compared to e-cigarette vapor on how bacteria behave and how harmful they are. The findings indicate that the effects of vaping on common lung pathogens may be similar to those of smoking.“

You send me CDC articles 🤦🏻‍♂️😂 Probably the worst advice you can send. The CDC are a laughingstock in the tobacco harm reduction world when it comes to their advice on e-cigarettes. Hell it took them a year to admit that vaping nicotine was NOT the cause of the EVALI outbreak which funny enough only happened in the US.

In its pure form I agree with you but no consumer ever comes into contact with pure nicotine. I also fully agree no 11 year old should be given a vape I don’t think anyone is arguing about that.

Well you were arguing that nicotine is harmless when vaped. That was the main substance of this rebuttal, so curious why you have not addressed that.

National Institute for Health and Care Excellence in the U.K. Guidance

1.20.10 Emphasise to pregnant women that:

most smoking-related health problems are caused by other components in tobacco smoke, not by the nicotine

any risks from using NRT are much lower than those of smoking

E-cigarettes may be more effective than nicotine patches for pregnant women trying to quit smoking, research found. The study did not raise any new safety concerns with e-cigarettes (vaping).

evidence.nihr.ac.uk/alert/e-cigarettes-better-than-nicotine-patches-helping-pregnant-women-stop-smoking/

Why are you comparing vaping with smoking? It’s not relevant here.

Your post:

most smoking-related health problems are caused by other components in tobacco smoke, not by the nicotine”

And the rest of the health-related problems are caused by what?

“any risks from using NRT are much lower than those of smoking”

The OP’s son is not a smoker, so this is irrelevant here.

Out of interest: You have asked others on the thread what their expertise is in relation to the medical effects of nicotine. What is yours?

Lenald · 02/01/2023 16:54

Based on a little bit of research - anyone can do it. And a smidgen of common sense.

Vaping was only created as a way to stop smoking, it’s a terrible idea to just start up when you don’t need to.

Absolutely agree with you. Vaping is designed for smokers looking for a safer alternative to consume nicotine and ween themselves off of combustible tobacco products which will most certainly kill you. There is no logical reason why a non smoker would start to vape.

Amybelle88 · 02/01/2023 21:51

The bickering on here regarding whether it's actually ok for the child to have nicotine. What the fuck.

Anyone with half a fucking brain knows nicotine is addictive and, at the very least, could cause a costly habit for them as they get older for absolutely zero reason whatsoever. Zero. There is no reason why a child should be vaping.

Am I on another planet or is it just common sense that inhaling a manufactured product into your lungs can't be good for you.

There's a surgeon on here with the right credentials and then some and she's being argued with. Fucking hell 😂😂😂

Of course you have to compare it to smoking which is the primary consumption method of nicotine. My involvement in this conversation was not around that but was around the misconceptions of the risks of nicotine. I have specialised in this field for over a decade. I advise governments around the world on vaping and nicotine. I have studied over 600+ reports on the topic as well as reviewing the findings directly with the authors, leading cancer researchers, and medical experts. I am also a key note speaker at several global tobacco harm reductions conferences each year.

Sorry but that is false information. Vaping is far better for you than smoking combustible cigarettes and in fact is at least 95% less harmful.

I actually agree , vaping is horrendous for your health all the chemicals in them - id say worse than cigarettes to some people, I started vaping instead of the odd cigarette and I have literally been no stop unwell (from vaping since June ) - see popcorn lung.

I will never ever touch a vape again in my life .

please stop your 11 year old seeing this man who is supposed to be his father !

First of all I did not say that nicotine was absolutely harmless. Nothing we do in this world is 100% safe. Have you read the back of medications these days. Anyway as the previous comments referred to pure nicotine they are not relevant to my point as consumers never come in contact with pure nicotine but a highly diluted form. Nicotine is a naturally occurring compound and most of us consume nicotine on a daily basis without even realising it. There is also so very j retesting research being consisted into the benifits of nicotine on cognitive regeneration. Heck 80% of US physicians still wrongly believe nicotine causes cancer. Spoiler alert it doesn’t.

Zombiemum1946 · 02/01/2023 22:14

Tell ex any further contact has to be done in a supervised setting, no outings, no overnights, purely a contact center. What he's done is incredible stupid. There are no excuses for this.

Sorry you feel unwell. But just to set your mind at easy there has never been a case of “popcorn lung” from vaping or even smoking for that matter anywhere in the world. Popcorn lung refers to a decease some people working in popcorn factories years ago suffered from which was caused by a substance called Diacetyl . This is a banned substance in vaping products except funny enough in the US. But even so cigarettes contain over 700 times more Diacetyl than vape eliquids ever had. Sounds more like you were on the ring strength of Vape especially is you only smoke the odd cigarette.

Cherrysherbet · 02/01/2023 22:18

Just NO.

Zombiemum1946 · 02/01/2023 22:19

The nicotine levels in these vapes are aimed at the average adult not children. In high enough concentration it's a poison. My sil was buying cheap ones online and unsafe illegal substances landed her in hospital.

Aspiringmatriarch · 02/01/2023 22:20

It's illegal for one thing. I'd be beyond furious, you poor DS. You need to take strong action against this and I wouldn't trust your ex to be honest about it in the future, either.

@Jdunne9407 wait.... What?

FlorenceAndTheVendingMachine · 02/01/2023 22:22

I've never heard anything as bonkers as buying an 11yo a vape. That said, there is a lot of misinformation in this thread. Public Health England estimate vaping to only be 5% as harmful as smoking. I'd still not be letting a child do it though!

SultanOfSwing · 02/01/2023 22:25

Totally not okay. Unfortunately your son needs to have supervised visits only with his father because obviously the man cannot be trusted.

WilsonMilson · 02/01/2023 22:26

This is so shocking, I would not let him go back there, and I would seek legal advice / social services.

100% true. If you eat things like say for example tomato’s, peppers, tea, eggplant, cauliflower you are consuming nicotine.
