11 Year old DS vapes when with his Dad

thelintofthesnow · 31/12/2022 16:43

My 11 year DS who is in Y7, sees his Dad every other weekend, well it has come out that his Dad vapes now, which because he is a fully grown adult is fine but what I am so angry about is that my ex has bought DS a vape and he regularly vapes when at his Dad's house.

Should I tell my ex that unless he stops DS vaping I cannot send him to his house? What would social services services do regarding the situation if ex refuses to do the sensible and right thing, which knowing him is the more likely outcome to happen.

Actually this is a common misconception about nicotine. Nicotine in its pure form while being addictive is relatively harmless. The harm in smoking is caused by the combustion process and the over 7000 chemicals in a cigarette.

‘Relatively’ is doing some heavy lifting here

Jdunne9407 · 01/01/2023 19:48

Sorry but that is false information. Vaping is far better for you than smoking combustible cigarettes and in fact is at least 95% less harmful.

95% less harmful that fags is like saying being run over by a car is 95% less harmful that being hit by a bus. It doesn’t mean that being hit by a car is fine.

Not even close to a similar comparison. You could compare it perhaps to j haling clean alpine air ( if there was such a thing) but you probably inhale more toxins walking down the average city street than you do from vaping. If you are in the U.K. and it sounds like you are, there are 220 smoking related deaths every day however there have been zero world wide caused by vaping nicotine and that’s with over 100 million people vaping . MHRA who monitor vaping in the U.K. with over 4.2 million people vaping recorded 320 adverse effects in 3 years ( most of which were minor ie it caused me to cough or have a dry mouth). To put that into context the covid vaccine has had over 300 in the past 14 days and prescription medicine over 1.7 million in 2022. 🤔

Absolutely not. Name one disease caused by nicotine?

The compulsive nature of addiction is unpleasant. A child should not be encouraged to develop a nicotine addiction by an adult.

Nicotine intensifies the sensation of other drugs and smokers are more likely to, for example, drink alcohol (there may be common causes at play but there is also evidence to suggest a causal relationship).

Nicotine delays wound healing and accelerates aging of the skin.

The long-term effects of inhaling the other chemicals in ENDs (vapes) remain unknown.

I think it is more useful to compare vaping to ‘not vaping’ than vaping to smoking tobacco in this instance. The comparison with tobacco is not relevant here – the OP’s child did not previously have any addictions and was not a tobacco smoker. There is absolutely no reason for them to be using a vape.

JustAnotherManicMomday · 02/01/2023 09:36

Report him to ss for child abuse. Also contact your gp to check over ds lungs. Hopefully your gp will then scare the crap out of your child so he tells others no thanks when offered to vape in future.

Whowhatwherewhenwhynow · 02/01/2023 11:14

PP suggestion to take him to GP is a good one.
GP will enter it into their notes and that can be used as evidence if ex takes you to court as well as checking out anything by health related that might support your son if he is addicted

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 02/01/2023 11:22

Vaping is very unpleasant, seeing people walking around with a coloured flute stuck in their mouths puffing that disgusting stuff into clouds repulses me. Grim. Adults are entitled to make the decision to do it but for an 11 yrold it is just wrong. The long term health impacts of vaping aren’t known yet but their addictive nature is.

Any parents allowing their child to vape are just terribly rough.

greennavy · 02/01/2023 11:25

That's basically like giving him a fag

He shouldn't be allowed contact

Actually this is a common misconception about nicotine. Nicotine in its pure form while being addictive is relatively harmless.

On the contrary, nicotine is a very dangerous drug. It's a very potent cardiovascular and neuro toxin, and in its pure form, it's absolutely lethal. It's been used to kill and assassinate before. It's one of the few toxins which are so potent that if you handle a very highly concentrated solution without protection, enough can be absorbed through your skin to kill you. It's also highly addictive and it's more addictive than heroin.

Nicotine IS a very, very dangerous drug. It can cause anything from mild nausea to full on severe vomiting, slightly raised heart rate to uncontrollable tachycardias and ventricular fibrillation (in other words, death), headaches, migraines, abdominal pain and cramps... It most certainly is NOT harmless, especially in its pure form.

An 11 year old child should not be wilfully exposed to nicotine through any means let alone vaping, especially as the dose of nicotine would have been optimised for an adult weighing nearly 3 times as much. Therefore, any 11 year old using a nicotine containing vape will be exposed to an extremely high level of nicotine for their bodyweight.

And yes, I do have a lot of expertise relevant to the subject:
Medical doctor
Cardiothoracic surgeon for nearly a decade after surgical training, cut out hundreds of lung cancers, and operated on hundreds of hearts
Transitioned to pharmaceutical medicine
Diploma in pharmaceutical medicine
Member of Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine
Sit on 2 governmental commissions on pharmaceutical products as an expert on pharmacology and drugs

What are your qualifications?

I got hit by a car as a child and walked away with cuts and bruises. So therefore it’s fine for everyone.

I cannot believe the people saying this is OK.

User963 · 02/01/2023 13:00

Isn’t it also the nicotine in cigarettes which causes low birth weight etc. has anyone looked at the effects of vaping on fertility etc?
OP I would be furious.

Thank you!

I have zero medical qualifications but a simple Google search provides countless sources on the negative effects of nicotine.

I suspect Jdunne sells vapes, but who knows.

In its pure form I agree with you but no consumer ever comes into contact with pure nicotine. I also fully agree no 11 year old should be given a vape I don’t think anyone is arguing about that.

most smoking-related health problems are caused by other components in tobacco smoke, not by the nicotine

any risks from using NRT are much lower than those of smoking

Well you were arguing that nicotine is harmless when vaped. That was the main substance of this rebuttal, so curious why you have not addressed that.

Why are you comparing vaping with smoking? It’s not relevant here.

Your post:

most smoking-related health problems are caused by other components in tobacco smoke, not by the nicotine”

And the rest of the health-related problems are caused by what?

“any risks from using NRT are much lower than those of smoking”

The OP’s son is not a smoker, so this is irrelevant here.

Out of interest: You have asked others on the thread what their expertise is in relation to the medical effects of nicotine. What is yours?

Jdunne9407 · 02/01/2023 00:23

Based on a little bit of research - anyone can do it. And a smidgen of common sense.

Vaping was only created as a way to stop smoking, it’s a terrible idea to just start up when you don’t need to.

I smoked for over a decade and gave up about 5 years ago. A while back I popped into a vape shop as I just fancied having one for ‘going out’ and having a drink.

The guy in the shop started talking about how effective they are for stopping smoking. When I stopped him to explain I was not a current smoker he looked at me like I’d asked to have a shit on his shop floor. He was just like: ‘Why would you do that?’ 😵‍💫 He basically told me to get a grip and reconsider. He was a vape salesman.
