11 Year old DS vapes when with his Dad

thelintofthesnow · 31/12/2022 16:43

My 11 year DS who is in Y7, sees his Dad every other weekend, well it has come out that his Dad vapes now, which because he is a fully grown adult is fine but what I am so angry about is that my ex has bought DS a vape and he regularly vapes when at his Dad's house.

Should I tell my ex that unless he stops DS vaping I cannot send him to his house? What would social services services do regarding the situation if ex refuses to do the sensible and right thing, which knowing him is the more likely outcome to happen.

Well you were arguing that nicotine is harmless when vaped. That was the main substance of this rebuttal, so curious why you have not addressed that.

I have over 600 report I can share with you but here are a couple of good ones for you to start with assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1107701/Nicotine-vaping-in-England-2022-report.pdf

"...you’d need to eat over 10kg of aubergine to be consuming the same amount of nicotine as a single cigarette"

Okay 🤣

Just curious. Do you know how much nicotine is in a single cigarette? And which specific cigarette are you referring to? The reason I ask is there is no such single answer as “nicotine single cigarette”

Oh for goodness sake 😅

Average is 10-12 mg, according to Professor Google.

But if it's harmless, why does it matter? Or are you just trying to re-emphasise how much expertise you have? If so, I get it! You can stand down!

(Still not really relevant to an 11 year old whose father has bought him a vape, though 😉)

First of all I did not say that nicotine was absolutely harmless. Nothing we do in this world is 100% safe. Have you read the back of medications these days. Anyway as the previous comments referred to pure nicotine they are not relevant to my point as consumers never come in contact with pure nicotine but a highly diluted form. Nicotine is a naturally occurring compound and most of us consume nicotine on a daily basis without even realising it. There is also so very j retesting research being consisted into the benifits of nicotine on cognitive regeneration. Heck 80% of US physicians still wrongly believe nicotine causes cancer. Spoiler alert it doesn’t.

No, the majority of the points made about the harmful effects of nicotine refer specifically to vaping, not to pure nicotine.

One person mentioned as an aside as part of a much longer post that pure nicotine is deadly.

Regarding background levels of nicotine, if vaping did not deliver significantly higher and more concentrated amounts of nicotine over and above whatever baseline levels we’re all exposed to in everyday life then it wouldn’t exist, would it.

Why are you focusing on a) pure nicotine and b) negligible background amounts in the everyday environment, rather than the nicotine delivered by vaping, which is obviously what the conversation is about.

No one here us talking about nicotine causing cancer.

Di you work for StrawMen R Us?

Quite astonishing that he’s done this. And tbh the arguments of @Jdunne9407 are just silly scientific willy waving and completely irrelevant to the matter in hand.

The man is introducing a child (his child) to a substance that causes addiction. In what universe is this a benign idea? In the very kindest interpretation he is incredibly lacking in common sense and shouldn’t have unsupervised contact.

I don’t know how SS would react but I would see a solicitor and go for minimal contact.

FlorenceAndTheVendingMachine · 02/01/2023 22:56

On a separate note, though, I'll bet a lot of people that would condemn this don't give nearly as much consideration to giving their children sugar.

There are loads of websites detailing how nicotine harms developing babies.

yes E cigarettes are safer than smoking in pregnancy but they aren’t risk free

Nothing we do in this world is risk free or 100% safe.

Adhdsucks · 02/01/2023 22:58

He’d never set eyes on my child again

Walkaround · 02/01/2023 23:00

Addiction is always harmful. Addicts go to great lengths to justify their silly choices, because they don’t want the cause of their addiction taken away from them. Nicotine, being highly addictive, is by definition harmful. So what if it helps your concentration if the lack of it makes you infinitely less capable of concentrating or staying calm than was the case before you were daft enough to start ingesting a known to be highly addictive substance? Nobody wants to suffer the side effects of nicotine withdrawal or to be a slave to a product they may not always be able to afford or get access to whenever they need it. No way should an 11 year old be given vapes. Nobody who is not already addicted to nicotine as a result of smoking should use nicotine vapes.

Queens University study - “A recurring theme of this study is the similarity in the effect of exposure to cigarette smoke compared to e-cigarette vapor on how bacteria behave and how harmful they are. The findings indicate that the effects of vaping on common lung pathogens may be similar to those of smoking.“

www.qub.ac.uk/Research/feature/vaping-may-have-similar-effects-to-smoking-on-harmful-lung-bacteria/

The important word here is “may” not does. No one anywhere is saying vaping is 100% safe. Nothing is world is.

“scientific willy waving“ love it. I am doing a talk shortly and could love to use that. Would you mind? Just curious which part of the world are you from?

If you’re not condoning the use of a vape by the OP’s son, what exactly is your point?

11yrs old? No way would I send my son, I’d let the ex know and if he objects let him know you’re contacting social services as that’s abuse. Absolutely shocking
