11 Year old DS vapes when with his Dad

thelintofthesnow · 31/12/2022 16:43

My 11 year DS who is in Y7, sees his Dad every other weekend, well it has come out that his Dad vapes now, which because he is a fully grown adult is fine but what I am so angry about is that my ex has bought DS a vape and he regularly vapes when at his Dad's house.

Should I tell my ex that unless he stops DS vaping I cannot send him to his house? What would social services services do regarding the situation if ex refuses to do the sensible and right thing, which knowing him is the more likely outcome to happen.

@Jdunne9407 is it really relevant? Those sources explain the benefits of switching to vaping as an alternative to smoking, and for use in helping smokers quit. I don't think the advice really intends to send the message that it's okay for an eleven year old non-smoker to start vaping, nor for his father to actively encourage it.

Sorry but that is false information. Vaping is far better for you than smoking combustible cigarettes and in fact is at least 95% less harmful.

Vaping may be less harmful than cigarettes but it's still harmful, especially to an 11 year old and especially if the product contains nicotine. What a dickhead the father is.

Absolutely agree no 11 year old should be vaping and it is illigal . I have no issue with that. I do have an issue with false information on the relative risks.

gluteustothemaximus · 01/01/2023 20:00

Anyone else think Jdunne9407 has got shares in vapes?😂

Vaping is utterly horrendous for your lungs and absolutely not intended for a growing persons lungs.

SLS500 · 01/01/2023 20:04

I wouldn't let him go and I'd report it to social services. I also couldn't trust an adult who thinks it's okay to let an 11 year old to vape.

Vaping hasn't been around for that long so there's no data on the long term impact especially in children's lungs, so I wouldn't take any notice of the "it's 95% less harmful" comment.

Bottom line is he's 11 years old he doesn't need to be inhaling anything but air!

Clymene · 01/01/2023 20:08

I'd also report him to social services. He bought his kid a vape. That's horrendous.

DarkDarkNight · 01/01/2023 20:13

That is disgusting. I would be livid if my partner did this. It is far too early to know how damaging vaping might be. It is completely unnecessary for a child to be vaping.

How sensible is your son? I would be telling him that sometimes we don’t know for years the long-term implications and dangers of things like smoking and alcohol consumption. If a grown adult thinks it’s ok for an 11 year old to vape I don’t think you’ll have much luck changing his opinion.

DarkDarkNight · 01/01/2023 20:15

I’ve just seen your update that it contains nicotine, I’m angry on your behalf 😡

junebirthdaygirl · 01/01/2023 20:15

I think if his shool heard your ds say this they would have to report it. His dad is not responsible enough to oversee his ds as he heads into teenage years. God only knows what he could introduce him to next. Report and stop contact

As an expert in this subject I can tell you that the information on that link is absolute garbage. Totally inaccurate and misleading information. If you want actual reliable information I suggest you look here . www.nhs.uk/live-well/quit-smoking/using-e-cigarettes-to-stop-smoking/

Thank god for a voice of reason posting something sensible. Not for one second condoning what his dad is doing, but there is so much catastrophising and inaccurate info on this thread.

"Thank god for a voice of reason posting something sensible. Not for one second condoning what his dad is doing, but there is so much catastrophising and inaccurate info on this thread." ....... Hmm it's hardly the behaviour of a responsible parent

My son's friend when 13 filmed himself vaping at home and the video was found by a teacher. The school took it very seriously and reported to social services.

Clymene · 01/01/2023 20:46

@Goodvibes84 - E cigarettes aren't allowed to be sold to under 18s. Buying one for an 11 year old beggars belief.

newplanneeded · 01/01/2023 21:00

@Jdunne9407 when nicotine cigarettes became mainstream doctors did recommend smoking to aid weak lungs. pregnant women smoked, believing falsely advertised health benefits peddled by the tobacco industry doctors.

So whilst a NHS link might look like a decent source, history already proved there is no such thing as a risk free inhalation of either, vape chemicals or nicotine and medical bodies like the NHS can get it wrong

Namenic · 01/01/2023 21:09

OP - I think I would discuss this with a health visitor, school nurse, social services or gp. At least there will be a record of what is happening. YANBU to be shocked and upset.

Nobody is saying it is the behaviour of a responsible parent? But saying it’s worse than smoking is simply not true. The op doesn’t need to be terrified more than she is. I would stop my child going there if I were the op.

I absolutely agree-I’m not sure why you think I don’t based on what I posted. I very clearly said I don’t condone what he’s doing for a second-horribly irresponsible parenting.

SD1978 · 01/01/2023 21:42

I doubt SS will do much, I suppose you can try them, at least for a chat. The difficulty will be with your sons age, if he wants to go to his dads, it's not as simple as stop sending him, he's old enough to have an opinion. I don't deny this is a frustrating, and very irresponsible position his father has taken, not trying to minimise that, but apart from trying to explain to him why it's a really silly thing to do, I'm not sure you do have much recourse at that age

Social Services, immediately.

Social services will do nothing. They have bigger fish to fry, unfortunately.

PerpetualFailure · 01/01/2023 21:47

Social services

Not really. The NHS findings are based on a systematic review of over 500+ non industry funded bodies of research. Many of which I have read myself as well as speaking directly with the research teams. Vaping & nicotine is probably one of the most studied products so cannot really be compared to those of the 60’s - 80’s tobacco industry.

Actually this is a common misconception about nicotine. Nicotine in its pure form while being addictive is relatively harmless. The harm in smoking is caused by the combustion process and the over 7000 chemicals in a cigarette.

SityingConar · 02/01/2023 00:28

Wow WTF. Yes, stop sending him round there, your child is being harmed.
