To expect them to put the heating on?!

DH and I have just got back from 2 nights with our oldest friends. We are as close to them as family for context. We have been absolutely freezing for the entire 48 hours! One of them just refuses to put any heating on. He has form
for this but has got worse. He has always been extremely tight, improved slightly with age but sometimes reverts to type. I get that heating is far from cheap atm but there are no categorically no money issues and it was sub zero, worse than camping. We asked him repeatedly to put heating on, even offered to contribute but he is stubborn and dug his heels in. We nearly went home. His other half is always diplomatic but I'm sure agreed with us! AIBU to expect a bit of heat in December in a draughty old house Mumsnet?!!

I have woken up to open the bedroom window. It's currently 18c with no heating on and not had it on since (honestly) mid March except for twice, in June and Nov for about 15 minutes each time to make sure rads didn't need bleeding.
Living in a double height flat above business premises means that heat rises and the minute you stand on the bottom stair and walk up, you can feel the heat cloak your shoulders.
Thermostat in sitting-room hasn't been below 17c even though I put it down to 15c. Yes, in summer I have fans going all night if there is no breeze. I'm not good in hot weather unless by the sea where there is nearly always a cooling breeze.

I have a situation at work where people keep turning the heating up as they feel cold but I’m way too hot. My argument is that they can put on more clothes but I can’t take any more off. I also know how stressed out I felt having the heat on for the recent cold snap and I wouldn’t be demanding anyone pay to heat the house up by 6 degrees right now. It is very expensive. And unless you’re there accountant you really have no idea about anyone’s financial situation.

The OP did offer to pay for having the heating on whilst they were there. With regards to work place heating, it's an established fact within the commercial heating industry that you'll be lucky to satisfy more than 80% of the occupants.

You could easily by my TA. She’s having hot flushes and constantly opening the windows because the heating is on in my classroom. It was 12 degrees yesterday and she suggested I put a cardigan on top of my jumper if I’m cold. I appreciate she is struggling with hot flushes but that doesn’t trump the fact myself and 27 children in the room are freezing.

Is she sitting there in a t shirt?

Blowyourowntrumpet · 04/01/2023 21:44

Mine's 18 degrees and I'm sitting here with a T shirt on wanting to open the windows and DH has wrapped himself in a blanket. I think it's too hot, he thinks it's too cold. I hate warm, stuffy rooms.

It ruins houses if heating is kept off

RampantIvy · 05/01/2023 12:39

18 degrees is definitely not T-shirt temperature for me. I'm wearing a warm jumper.

I’m wearing thermal socks, plus slipper socks plus thermal leggings, a t-shirt, a cashmere jumper and an oodie. I’m also under a blanket. My thermostat says 18 degrees.

As far as I’m concerned, 18 is COLD.

Depends on humidity
