AIBU to not lend neighbour my car?

Just that really... new neighbours (less than a year), not particularly close (friendly when I first moved in but a series of events has lead to some distance).

Was asked out of the blue if I had comprehensive insurance, and if so could they borrow my car as needed to sort something out at their buy-to-let (defrosting a boiler condenser pipe, so not an emergency!)

Been made to feel a bit mean, though I lied and said I didn't have the insurance.

YABU - Perfectly reasonable to ask an acquaintance if you can borrow their car, and it's mean of them not to say yes

YANBU - No, I wouldn't lend my car to someone (except maybe close family)

There's been a whole series of bonkers behaviour and now genuinely wondering if I was mean not to lend it! (I did offer a lift if needed but had to rescind the offer after 4 hours and still no time for said lift given - was clear I was expected to wait about all day in case offer was taken up!)

Given that they are a bit thick as think your insurance would cover them

Either thick or trying to pull a fast one: if they had an accident, blame OP for 'lying' about having fully comp insurance, claiming that FC means anybody can drive it.

Who has a policy whereby anybody is insured to drive a car, except maybe a company with pool cars and a lot of employees? Certainly not a private domestic-owned car. Some people (e.g. mechanics) have insurance that allows them to drive any car, covered FC, but it's their insurance in their name and nothing to do with the car owner (apart from to give permission).

WonderingWanda · 29/12/2022 19:20

I wouldn't lend anyone my car. That's very cheeky of them and your insurance won't cover them unless you ring up and get them named on your policy, which would cost you money.

Hoppinggreen · 29/12/2022 19:20

I lent my car to a neighbour once when there’s would put start a date they needed to do the school run. However, we were also friends and we knew them pretty well.
Would have been a no otherwise

Georgyporky · 29/12/2022 19:21

Insurance rules are different in different countries - sometimes the car is insured regardless of driver.

However, i'd never lend my car to anyone - don't even like DH driving it.

Pelo22 · 29/12/2022 19:23

No
I would to my neighbour BUT I've known them 16 years

crazycatgal · 29/12/2022 19:23

YANBU, what a CF! There are only 2 people who I would allow to drive my car - my DP who is a named driver on my car (as I am on his) and my dad. That's it. Who the hell expects random neighbours to allow them to borrow their car.

Identifyingasadolphin · 29/12/2022 19:26

Absolutely not.
Reply - “they wouldn't be able to set up “their own” vehicle insurance to cover them that quickly…..”
You will happily help them find some care hire companies….

Justcallmebebes · 29/12/2022 19:28

No way. Close family, maybe

HunterHearstHelmsley · 29/12/2022 19:31

Likeliked · 29/12/2022 18:50

I misread this as cat…

Anyway, YANBU.

I've got four cats. I'd be more inclined to lend one of them to a neighbour than my car! 🤣

earsup · 29/12/2022 19:31

NO....i lent my car once to a friend in an emegency, she skidded to avoid a cat, hit kerb, blew a tyre...it cost her £40 for new tyre as i wasnt paying for it, but she was fine about it all.....but it could have been a major crash !....have never lent out since as now have restricted ins for me only to drive as its cheaper.

Thedogscollar · 29/12/2022 19:32

What the hell no way. Mad to even ask as if anyone in their right mind would say yeah of course crack on🙄
Have they not heard of public transport or taxis?
YADNBU.

Isleoftights · 29/12/2022 19:32

'defrost a boiler condenser pipe'. If they have a BTL they should have landlord insurance/a letting agent to sort such issues. That they choose not to, is their problem not yours.

mm40 · 29/12/2022 19:32

Normally definitely not - especially as they have a Fiesta/Corsa and you have Audi S8’s or Bentleys

LlynTegid · 29/12/2022 19:34

No I would not. If it was something such as the need to get to an elderly relative and I had a car, if it was that urgent I would drive them there, not otherwise.

No way would I support someone who is helping keep people out of reach of ever buying a house.

deflatedbirthday · 29/12/2022 19:36

OP we need to be regaled with their other CF stories!

Cakeyface123 · 29/12/2022 19:39

Wow full house with the vote OP. I’ve actually never seen a full 100% vote. Confirms you were definitely right to say no

tenbob · 29/12/2022 19:44

Beyond cheeky of them to ask but…

re insurance… I have a fully comp policy on my car which allows me to drive any other car as long as that car is also insured fully comp
BUT my policy only gives me third party insurance (ie the legal minimum) so I’m not covered if I crash and damage the car

I always make sure I have it as I’ve had a couple of instances when I had to drive my parents and friends cars in an emergency but it’s not something to rely on

custardcreme77 · 29/12/2022 19:44

100% no.

MeridianB · 29/12/2022 19:44

They sound nuts in a worrying way. I second the distancing - smile and wave.

Did they text you the pass ag message about the lift? Maybe block them now. You can always claim your phone is playing up if they query it.

Purplecatshopaholic · 29/12/2022 19:53

Defo cut contact right back to a cheery distant wave! They are batshit - and CFs to boot!

Canthave2manycats · 29/12/2022 19:56

WitchDancer · 29/12/2022 18:39

I don't like lending DH my car, let alone an almost stranger. YANBU in any way!

^Same!!

What CFers!! God knows what they will ask for next!!

BoxOfCats · 29/12/2022 19:56

YANBU to say no to them.

YABU to withhold tales of their other weird cheeky fucker-ness Grin

dawngreen · 29/12/2022 19:59

They might want to use your car to transport diy stuff. No way you cannot trust them insurance wise, and it might arrive back damaged or messy and scratched with the remains of what they used it to transport to the rental place.

PurplePixies · 29/12/2022 20:01

God no, YANBU.

I won’t even let DH drive my car and he’s a named driver on the insurance. (I’d have to be hospitalised before I’d let him drive…!)

So what else have they done or said? I’m invested now and need to know. 😂

MaggieFS · 29/12/2022 20:03

Please fill us in on everything else OP, it sounds like it could be entertaining!

What an odd request! Either they really are batshit, or poss from overseas? In some countries it's the car that's insured and people can let others driver their cars.
