AIBU to not lend neighbour my car?

Just that really... new neighbours (less than a year), not particularly close (friendly when I first moved in but a series of events has lead to some distance).

Was asked out of the blue if I had comprehensive insurance, and if so could they borrow my car as needed to sort something out at their buy-to-let (defrosting a boiler condenser pipe, so not an emergency!)

Been made to feel a bit mean, though I lied and said I didn't have the insurance.

YABU - Perfectly reasonable to ask an acquaintance if you can borrow their car, and it's mean of them not to say yes

YANBU - No, I wouldn't lend my car to someone (except maybe close family)

There's been a whole series of bonkers behaviour and now genuinely wondering if I was mean not to lend it! (I did offer a lift if needed but had to rescind the offer after 4 hours and still no time for said lift given - was clear I was expected to wait about all day in case offer was taken up!)

If they can afford to have a buy to let then they can afford to hire a car for one day

Could you offer them a lift?

I did offer a lift, at 10am, but 2:30 neighbour still couldn't say what time they would need lift so I went to do some errands (literally back in 30 mins as I told them) and got a very passive agressive message about not being available!

Thanks all, it's not a word I use lightly but feel like I'm being gaslit here, and going a bit bonkers!!! Glad pretty much everyone agrees is an odd request!

Bonkers of them to even ask. YANBU

Jonagirl · 29/12/2022 18:55

Yanbu. I had a close friend ask to borrow mine before and I said no, I think it's a cheeky ask of most people to be honest

AmyDudley · 29/12/2022 18:57

I've lent my car to my neighbour when his broke down, he's a retired police officer and a good driver and he's covered to drive other cars (it is not your insurance that is relevant it is your neighbour's). But I trust my neighbour he helps me out a lot and I am happy to help him out if needed. There are other neighbours in the street I wouldn't let any where near my car.
You aren't obliged to lend your car to anyone, so don't feel guilty. In order to drive your car legally he'd need a drive other cars clause on his insurance - fully comp alone is not enough.

huuskymam · 29/12/2022 18:59

Depending on the insurance, fully comp usually covers you as the driver on another car, not someone else driving yours. That's the way mine works anyway. But you are definitely not being unreasonable . I certainly wouldn't be lending a near stranger my car.

HouseIsOnFire · 29/12/2022 18:59

Yes, I would have checked my insurance had I decided to lend the car, but to be honest that was an easy out - it surprised me they thought they would be covered!

Cheeky sods.

IglesiasPiggl · 29/12/2022 19:03

Do you have Zipcar operating in your area? That would be the perfect solution to their lack of car. No way would I lend anyone my car, let alone someone I don't know that well.

EphraimMonk · 29/12/2022 19:04

They would have had to prise my car keys from my cold, dead hand.

Outstanding cheeky fuckery!

woodhill · 29/12/2022 19:04

No way would I do this

Yanbu

loafintheoven · 29/12/2022 19:05

Taxi?

Coffeepot72 · 29/12/2022 19:06

No one is borrowing my cat or my car!

Woahtherehoney · 29/12/2022 19:07

Proper CF behaviour! I wouldn’t let anyone drive my car except my DP and my Mum! I can’t believe someone would even have the cheek to ask.

Same for me too.

LynneBenfield · 29/12/2022 19:07

Your neighbour is batshit.

A lift.
A taxi.
A car share app or scheme.
A bus.
A friend or family member.

All would’ve been appropriate options. Your car was the oddest. As for being rude about not waiting around for you to drive them about, they’ve somewhat cut their nose off to spite their face for future favours.

KvotheTheBloodless · 29/12/2022 19:08

Assuming you're in the UK, insurance is normally attached to the person as well as the car, you'd need to add your neighbour as a named driver on your policy. He is a right CF!

Schoolchoicesucks · 29/12/2022 19:08

Fully comp doesn't mean fully insured for damage to your car for any random person to drive it. So no, I wouldn't lend my car to a neighbour other than in a dire emergency (erm - their child needs to get to A&E when there's an ambulance strike and I'm over the limit to drive them myself. Maybe).

And no, you're also not U in not making yourself available all day to drive them. That's what taxis, car sharing services or public transport are for.

Greyarea12 · 29/12/2022 19:08

Having comprehensive insurance is irrelevant. To be able to drive another person's car and for insurance to cover that person, they need to be a named driver on your insurance. So that's your answer them, no, because you aren't on my insurance as a named driver.

billy1966 · 29/12/2022 19:10

Let this be the final contact with them.

They clearly think you are a complete mug.

Put distance between you, they are CF.

Hopeyoursproutsarealreadyon · 29/12/2022 19:13

We aren't close to our ndn's but def be available for the other in a crisis. I would lend my car no problem.
But possibly only because it's only work 2k!

WingingItSince1973 · 29/12/2022 19:13

Absolutely not BU. Also re the insurance I am insured for my car obviously and my dad has fully comp for his but due to his ill health and my dm preferring my dads car I've been taking her to her hospital appointments the last few months. My dad had to get me added onto his insurance as a named driver for £50 for the year. I wouldn't lend your neighbours the car and even if you did they would have to pay to be added to the insurance x

How I wish it could be, difficult with a next door neighbour!

However definitely cutting right back to a distant wave... not even the oddest thing they've done this week!
