To think toddler swearing isn’t a big deal

My daughter recently said fuck off recently. I was videoing her and she said it in context, she is two. I tried not to react as didn’t want to make it into a bigger deal. I don’t swear around my kids, or certainly not at them.

I told her dad, sent him the video because the timing was perfect and kind of funny ( I do NOT think children swearing is okay or cute but it happens).
a whole argue started as he said he’s not impressed, I need to find out where she got it from, we recently spent time with family over Christmas. My family also don’t swear around elders or children culturally it’s not the done thing.

Her dad said he feels like someone must be talking to her like that, maybe in my family we think it’s okay but no one is his family ever swore as a child. He said I need to figure out how she learnt this, could be from literally anywhere?! I don’t think hunk it’s a big deal, she doesn’t know what the words mean and I wouldn’t encourage it? Am I really being unreasonable to think it’s not a big deal?

No need to thank but I’ll take it!

😊

Seriously have I missed something… is “rat” a swear word now?!

Ludo19 · 29/12/2022 17:05

No rat is not a swear word I think that @GlitteryShinyShit was referring to the context it was said? Not nice?

Goingforarun · 29/12/2022 17:06

Just delete the video.

Myfinalthoughtsonthisissue · 29/12/2022 17:09

I'd be worried about where she's heard it. Either someone is getting quite angry in front of her and saying it to someone else or (worse), they're saying it to her.

At the end of the day, it's just words but for lots of people that phrase is said when they're pretty angry and in the mood for insulting one. I wouldn't want my kid in that environment.

@Ursuladevine Seeing as you like picking apart everything people say, I thought you might notice that PP never said that “rat” was a swear word, they said that their child “knows swear words” - the story they told was to illustrate that children can say unpredictable and slightly offensive things at times.

Mamai90 · 29/12/2022 17:13

I'm with you OP.

Fairislefandango · 29/12/2022 17:14

Since when is “rat” a swear word

Confused The poster didn't say it was a swear word. Her child shouted something rude, and she is also aware that he knows swear words.

CorrodedCoffin · 29/12/2022 16:55

@Ursuladevine You think it has context because she paired “f*ck” with “off”? She’s 2. She doesn’t know what those words mean put together. She just heard a phrase and copied it.

No.
The OP asked the child to do something for the video she was making and the child said "fuck off".
There's your context.

123woop · 29/12/2022 17:41

Omg some of the replies to this!
All kids swear at some point and you're best off not making a big deal of it. It's just one of those things and we've always found it quite comical when our kids come out with swear words - they usually do it once and as long as you ignore it they never do it again. I can't stand parents who are precious about swearing, especially when their kids are teenagers - believe me, they're probably swearing all the time outside of the home 🤣

Thank you. I thought it was clear too

Remember, America was founded by the Puritans. Swearing in many circles, especially with women present, is still not cool. I do swear occasionally, but rarely in front of others.

hattie43 · 29/12/2022 17:49

I've never heard a toddler swear and don't think highly of it either .

That’s a New England thing. Beyond there, the rest of the US was founded by French fur traders and Spanish ranchers- swearing isn’t such an issue in those parts.

Liz1tummypain · 29/12/2022 17:54

This is why teachers have such a hard time.
I don't imagine I'd want anyone to know my daughter of 2 had started to swear. It's pretty bad in my opinion. Call me an old fart if that helps.

Pottymouthw · 29/12/2022 14:59

I didn’t share it around I sent it to her dad to ask if she said what I thought she said… I didn’t post it on social media or send to any other family. And I posted to see people’s thoughts because myself and her dad have had completely different reactions

Your user name is very apt

To be accused of neglecting her is a bit far fetched.. maybe that’s just me. I have never sworn AT my children I don’t treat them like that, I don’t encourage them to speak like that

Could she have heard the neighbours arguing

pheonixrebirth · 29/12/2022 18:16

OP please don't worry about it and the comments on here. It happens to the best of us.

My little boy at the same age, dropped something and said "oh shit". It was funny, me and my grandma laughed.

That little lad is now 25 and won't swear in front of me ever, not even the word fart. But I'm under no illusions that he doesn't ever swear, most people do at some point or another.

As a parent there are many more things to worry about than this.

You handled it perfectly.

From the reactions on this thread you'd think you caught her mainlining class A drugs.

I remember a few years ago a little girl on you tube who did the ice bucket challenge, who screamed "fuckin hell"!
That video went viral - because it was fuckin funny. 😂😂😂

PumpkinLumpkin · 29/12/2022 18:34

It's not a big deal.

If no one in either family swears around her then she's picked it up as a one off.

Everyone getting their knickers in a twist like posters on this thread is what will make it a big deal. Ignore it, don't even register it and she'll not say it again. It will be forgotten about as quickly as it was learnt.

NoNamesLeft234678 · 29/12/2022 19:04

I'd be upset if my ds swore. He's only 16 months and not saying anything yet but it's definitely something I'm really not looking forward to. I don't swear at all and I think it's awful when anyone does. I've heard kids that swear and think it's really horrible.
