AIBU to feel ripped off by M&S and the Turkey "crown" I bought

Booked a "feeds 8-10" turkey crown in October, picked it up last week. weight seemed ok for feeding the 8-10.

Opened it to cook on Boxing Day, needing to feed 9 of us only to find that tucked under the "crown" and not visible through then packaging were the top joint/ bones of the legs with no meat on them. So this inedible extra added to the weight and made the whole thing look larger than it was, carefully hidden by packaging.

Family portions were small to make sure our guests ate well.

We had a turkey crown from M&S last year and there were no leg parts attached so I do feel ripped off.

If you had a turkey crown from anywhere this Christmas, did it include bits of leg ?

We had a frozen Turkey crown from Iceland. It was delicious. All meat. No waste.

IneedanewTV · 28/12/2022 22:07

Someone posted that a crow has breast bone in it. My Turkey didn’t have any bone so what did I order? It was delicious and well worth the money from the butchers though.

birder · 28/12/2022 22:18

Longleggedgiraffe Obviously the luck of the draw.

We had a sainsburys frozen crown for 5-7 people , had no extra bones and a good 7 portions. Plus alot more when I boiled it for soup. Dad said it carved well and it was very tasty, was impressed for only £16.

LadyEloise1 · 28/12/2022 23:45

Our M&S Turkey crown was lovely. It had stuffing and rashers over the top of it.

ConfusedmumUC · 28/12/2022 23:54

Was it this range? It had legs, didn’t feed anywhere near 14 and was £91 🙃 never again!

I've been buying a turkey crown from Lidl for years now, and been really happy with it. Plenty meat for Xmas day, and more than enough leftovers. Started a new job earlier this year, which offered a very good discount on M&S food, so thought I'd treat myself to their Oakham turkey crown. Never again! Said it would serve 8-10, but only just got enough meat for 3 adults and two teens - and none of us are huge eaters. Couple of small slices for a sandwich on Boxing Day, and it was done. Glad I didn't pay anything close to the £56 price tag.

We had a three bird roast from M & S tonight, stated to feed 6-8 I think, and it was a sizing. Loads Left over.

I wish that people wouldn’t complain about there not being enough meat on their crowns/turkeys. It’s this kind of consumer that drives the horrid practice of making these poor animals so fat that their legs break underneath them. Perhaps we should be less greedy and the animals raised for meat will have a healthier (albeit short) life.

DixonD · 29/12/2022 00:12

*amazing. Not a sizing. I hate auto correct.

Well, to be fair this does say “on the bone” so I would expect, er, bones.

Ha! No, absolutely you’re right, fair cop. In my naivety however I was thinking it would be the breast bone in the centre? I wasn’t expecting legs lol.

Teapleasebobb · 29/12/2022 00:31

Same for us with an Aldi crown. Never bought a crown before, I've always bought a full medium turkey so wasn't sure what to expect, was surprised to see legs and it definitely wouldn't have served 6 as stated! Legs were tucked under too so it looked like a crown in the packaging.

Strawberry0909 · 29/12/2022 00:33

We bought a frozen turkey crown from Tesco and it wasn't like our usual crowns, it has wings and really tricky to get a good cut off of it, not pleased with it

What i find odd is that staff from these shops must sit down and have a good chat and plan about how to make things look bigger for the customer than they actually are. Maybe there are secret departments dedicated to this cause!

Of course, it's the marketing department.

CoffeeBoy · 29/12/2022 05:57

I think what some of you need next year is a turkey butterfly, not a turkey crown.

Figgypudding123 · 29/12/2022 06:27

Our M&S was a crown - no legs. Said 6-8 but in reality was more like 6. We've had 3 meat-eaters at Christmas dinner and 3 portions of Turkey curry from it.

Georgeandzippyzoo · 29/12/2022 07:50

We pre booked a crown for 6-8 from Sainsbury's. It was the smallest weight it could be within that range which was fine BUT it had both legs and wings which meant that the actual meat weight was well below the expected.
That said the meat was lovely and there was plenty of meat for Xmas day and a couple of days for picking/sandwiches. However had we cooked it for the time given we'd all have food poison!

We were disappointed and will rethink for next year.

Wdib78 · 29/12/2022 08:03

Lidl frozen, feeds 6-8, served 3, had a bit of leftovers, rest will be put in gravy in tubs and frozen, LPADS left btw

Wdib78 · 29/12/2022 08:04

LOADS lol

Americano75 · 29/12/2022 10:15

Well, I've just been sent an e-card with the full amount of the turkey on it, so it's worth complaining!

chocolatebrioche · 29/12/2022 10:25

Ours was from Cook, and it was definitely a proper crown. No legs, wings or other unexpected bits. It fed 10 as advertised, too.

FeelingwearyFeeelingsmall · 29/12/2022 10:29

That's a risky strategy. You might end up with a bargain or (as happened to is one year) you might end up with a tiny joint of belly pork for Christmas as that was all we could get in the 6 supermarkets we ended up visiting. It was very nice but didn't feel festive!

OhForCodsHake · 29/12/2022 11:02

We had an M&S turkey crown too and had exactly the same problem. Really difficult to carve, with lots of bits of bone to pick out before serving and lots of scrappy pieces rather than nice slices.

Vinvertebrate · 29/12/2022 11:27

Ha! No, absolutely you’re right, fair cop. In my naivety however I was thinking it would be the breast bone in the centre? I wasn’t expecting legs lol

To be fair, that’s been the case in other years. The extra bones are new. They’re definitely wings though.

zingally · 29/12/2022 14:06

This is why the past few years we've just thought "fuck it" and bought a chicken instead. A large bird will easily serve 5 and probably 6 at a pinch. Cheaper as well.
