AIBU to feel ripped off by M&S and the Turkey "crown" I bought

Booked a "feeds 8-10" turkey crown in October, picked it up last week. weight seemed ok for feeding the 8-10.

Opened it to cook on Boxing Day, needing to feed 9 of us only to find that tucked under the "crown" and not visible through then packaging were the top joint/ bones of the legs with no meat on them. So this inedible extra added to the weight and made the whole thing look larger than it was, carefully hidden by packaging.

Family portions were small to make sure our guests ate well.

We had a turkey crown from M&S last year and there were no leg parts attached so I do feel ripped off.

If you had a turkey crown from anywhere this Christmas, did it include bits of leg ?

No dead flesh on my vegan roast.

Wow, this profound comment has made me rethink all my dietary and economic decisions

Haffiana · 28/12/2022 16:47

I am willing to bet that the 'leg' bones were in fact wings. A turkey leg bone is almost a foot long and wouldn't tuck under a breast.

cantba · 28/12/2022 16:50

We fed 9 with our m&s crown with leftovers. I think you got a bad one.

Ashhead24 · 28/12/2022 16:52

The M&S beef was very disappointing this year too. Serve 8-10, 5 adults, 1 child and 2 toddlers who had a tiny taste. No leftovers at all. In fact I'd gone out for extra accompaniments after looking at it as it was obvious it wouldn't be enough. Vastly smaller than last year and much more expensive. Wouldn't mind the cost if it had fed what it said it would.

Tigerstripe20 · 28/12/2022 16:52

M&S turkey crown here , red cardboard label ,serves 8-10.
No legs, no extra bits and easily fed 7 ( and we are greedy gits)with some spare.
We added butter under the skin to moisten and it was lovely.
We also had the honey baked gammon which I was really pleased with.

BarrelOfOtters · 28/12/2022 16:52

Our. M&S Turkey was an 8to 12 one, there was loads, really lovely. Flipping expensive though.

Oher · 28/12/2022 16:52

We had a turkey crown from Waitrose, cost £40, said would feed 6-8. No legs or bone of any kind.

4 of us ate lots of it on xmas day. Had some more on xmas evening in sandwiches. Husband and sister had some
more on Boxing day with chips for lunch. Husband and DD ate more yesterday.

There was still half left 😱 it was so
huge!!

Next time don’t bother ordering in
advance just pop to Waitrose on xmas evening (it was not busy) and buy one that looks good.

amonsteronthehill · 28/12/2022 16:54

I hope you took pictures. Complain. On SM if you get nowhere. That's appalling .. and not surprising based on what I'm hearing about stores taking the piss with higher prices and smaller, deceptively smaller, portions.

Weepachu · 28/12/2022 16:59

Wouldn’t expect anything less from Marks & Spencer. Next year go with Lidl, Aldi or Morrisons.
Sorry you had a bad experience!

Vinvertebrate · 28/12/2022 17:00

Our £60 m and s crown also had bones - but I think they are wing bones tucked below the breast. I used to cook Turkey thighs fur my dog and some are the size of a whole chicken. No issues with the portion size although we are not big eaters

I got all my veg fresh this year and it was a million times nicer than the M&S pre-packed stuff.

RiderOfTheBlue · 28/12/2022 17:00

We had a crown from Co Op. That also had the legs bones attached. Not impressed.

Well no pet obviously not 🙄

😂😂😂

Bluebird1234 · 28/12/2022 17:01

Our M&S one had the weird legs (never had them before) and was definitely smaller than normal. However, it was delicious

Guineapig123 · 28/12/2022 17:01

You need to speak to M&S as they should not have leg bones. We had a served 8-10 stuffed crown from M&S, which when we picked it up was on the smaller side and said serves 8. It actually served 9 of us with loads left over.

DorothyBinns · 28/12/2022 17:03

We had a stuffed turkey crown from Cook - £50. Delivered frozen in early December, so no need to collect it (I usually get an M&S one but the thought of the car park scrum and queue just before Christmas put me off this year). I also ordered Cook pigs in blankets, stuffing balls, gravy and red cabbage.

It was very good and I’ll definitely use Cook again.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 28/12/2022 17:06

How to turn a turkey into a crown

again

A crown with legs, is a whole turkey.
Are you sure they weren't wings?

Sundayvibes · 28/12/2022 17:08

Surprised at the amount of people ordering from M&S.

Bought a 2.5kg ( feeds 7-9 ) crown from Lidl.
I paid £18.80.
I’ll buy from there next Xmas

DistressedDamson · 28/12/2022 17:09

I’m a meat eater btw but some of the descriptions in these comments are quite gross! Gashes! Legs stuffed in cavities! WINDPIPES! 🤮🤣

QueenofLouisiana · 28/12/2022 17:10

Local butchers, turkey crown was part of the meat hamper. (£55 in total- delivered on 23rd). Fed 4 on Christmas Day (plus moochy greyhound). Lots of sandwiches on Boxing Day, same yesterday. I'm about to cook turkey in white sauce for pasta and freeze some as I still have a large chunk (and my parents kept half of the leftovers). No bones, came wrapped in bacon (I paid a couple of quid extra for that).
Whole hamper included sausages, chipolatas, bacon, turkey, pork, gammon and sausage meat. A lot of it went straight in the freezer for New Year etc.
I wouldn't go anywhere else for my Christmas meat.

What a great deal. Most of the other supermarkets are rip off merchants and particularly like to stick it to us a Christmas.

DFSsale · 28/12/2022 17:11

Um, guys, turkey legs are massive. The meatless legs on your crown aren’t legs, they’re wings.

mindutopia · 28/12/2022 17:17

Christ, I had an actual turkey from Tesco for £17 that said fed 8-10, and it fed 4 adults/2 dc on Christmas and Boxing Day and we still have leftovers in the fridge!

RiderOfTheBlue · 28/12/2022 17:17

Doesn't really matter whether they're leg or wing bones, they shouldn't be there, never have been in previous years.

Benjispruce4 · 28/12/2022 17:18

Whole 4.6kg turkey from Lidl was £15.99! Fed us for days. Christmas dinner for 6, buffet in Boxing Day plus sandwiches, a turkey curry last night and turkey soup today
Complain.

LucyWhipple · 28/12/2022 17:18

Our Cook Turkey crown was absolutely fab - served 6 adults & 2dc on Christmas Day, then again Boxing Day & still loads of leftovers to send home with people on 27th.

Not cheap at £50 but well worth it for ease vs taste vs amount imo.
