AIBU to feel ripped off by M&S and the Turkey "crown" I bought

Booked a "feeds 8-10" turkey crown in October, picked it up last week. weight seemed ok for feeding the 8-10.

Opened it to cook on Boxing Day, needing to feed 9 of us only to find that tucked under the "crown" and not visible through then packaging were the top joint/ bones of the legs with no meat on them. So this inedible extra added to the weight and made the whole thing look larger than it was, carefully hidden by packaging.

Family portions were small to make sure our guests ate well.

We had a turkey crown from M&S last year and there were no leg parts attached so I do feel ripped off.

If you had a turkey crown from anywhere this Christmas, did it include bits of leg ?

That does seem an odd addition! Our M&S Turkey crown just had stuffing and bacon and went down very well.

We usually get an M&S crown but went for a whole turkey this year. Never again, it had a use before date of 27/12, husband cooked it on the 24th. Come Boxing Day it was rotten. I've complained to them, to be honest it wasn't even all that nice on Christmas Day!

ThePoshUns · 28/12/2022 14:45

I too had the M&S crown ( oakham one I think?) 8-10z
No leg bones. I cooked for 8 adults and there was only just enough for us all. Luckily I had done some beef as well so no one starved!
It was a lovely moist turkey but not worth the £60 I paid for it!

Catswhisky · 28/12/2022 14:48

Our Salisbury’s crown also came with skinny legs and wasn’t big enough. It was supposed to feed 7-9 I think and it barely fed 4. Luckily I’d accidentally bought pigs in blankets twice so we had plenty of those.

Catswhisky · 28/12/2022 14:48

*Sainsbury’s

EcoCustard · 28/12/2022 14:49

My Turkey crown from the local butcher came with the wings, giblets, neck, and windpipe. Was bloody fuming as it wasn’t cheap and didn’t realise until 10pm Christmas Eve. Usually reliable never an issue in 8 years so will have a small whinge tomorrow.

Featheryboa · 28/12/2022 14:50

I had a Sainsbury's turkey crown, no leg. Serves '3 to 7'. It was plenty for 5 adults, with leftovers.
Cost - £17.

DifferentYearSameShit · 28/12/2022 14:50

Why did you feed your family less than the guests surely all get the same and fill up on veg and potatoes

crimsonlake · 28/12/2022 14:51

Frozen crown from Asda, think it was to feed 11 -14? There were 5 of us, but we had two Christmas dinners, multiple turkey baps and it is still going. Good value for £20.

CoffeeBoy · 28/12/2022 14:53

Loads of people on the unofficial Aldi fb group were saying the same but when they took photos people were saying it was wings not legs. To me they looked like legs but I’m no butcher and apparently the experts said it was wings, hence no meat. I had a medium chicken from co-op but it only just fed two of us. Seemed very skinny.

Eh. ? I thought the definition of “crown” was that you only got the breast and no other bits.

Ours from Asda (the one advertised on telly) was £20 and served four on Xmas day, 2 lots of butties, will feed 2 of us for tea tonight and probably another lot of butties after that.

Shodan · 28/12/2022 14:54

I had an M and S turkey crown that claimed to feed 8-10 too. Mine had the top of the legs but with lots of meat on.

However- it would not have fed 8-10. Not by any stretch. It did feed 5 with leftovers though (a relatively small amount).

I've never had a crown before and I was surprised to see it had legs attached- I always thought it was just breast meat.

Luckily I was given a voucher by the builders who scammed me this year so I didn't actually pay for it...

AnyFucker · 28/12/2022 14:54

Oh, and it was lovely and moist too with loads of stuffing.

TerfOnATrain · 28/12/2022 14:55

M&S turkey crown here. No legs and the only bone was a very small bit around the wishbone.

KarmaStar · 28/12/2022 14:55

No dead flesh on my vegan roast.

LouisCatorze · 28/12/2022 14:55

Would have thought the bones or 'extras' (offal) could be the basics for gravy stock though?

jtaeapa · 28/12/2022 14:55

Next year go to Tesco and buy one off the shelf. You can get a whole Turkey for about £20 that will feed about 8-10 people. I got one for £14 that easily fed 6.

Goodywhoshoes · 28/12/2022 14:56

I ended up (due to illnesses/injuries) getting a cook from frozen Turkey breast joint from Iceland that feeds 4.
Will definitely seek one out next year. We have already had 4 portions out of it (& I forgot to cook the pigs in blankets & stuffing!) and there are still another couple of portions left. Easy to cook, easy to carve, lovely and moist and no mess or waste.

15stonelighter · 28/12/2022 14:57

Yep. I took a photo, was also disappointed to find a large, deep gash in one side, also hidden by the packaging.

We always have a crown, never been any legs on it. That is annoying.

AssumingDirectControl · 28/12/2022 14:57

Our M&S crown was to feed 10-12, easily fed 10 humans and four cats. Plenty there, no additional bits or bones.

FamilyLife2point4 · 28/12/2022 14:58

We got a 6-8 crown from M&S and it had legs on it - lots of bone too. Honestly don’t be pre-ordering from them again (queue to pick up was tiny, think lots of folk going elsewhere)

AngelDelightUK · 28/12/2022 14:58

We had an 8-10 Turkey crown from M&S and I was surprised at how small it was for £40. That’s Ocado for you though! But I hate busy shops so it suited

ProperVexed · 28/12/2022 14:59

I had a frozen "crown" from Sainsbury’s. I too was surprised to find boney legs beneath it, and the still attached neck bent inside it.
However, it was plenty big enough and delicious.
Certainly wasn't a crown.
