AIBU to feel ripped off by M&S and the Turkey "crown" I bought

Booked a "feeds 8-10" turkey crown in October, picked it up last week. weight seemed ok for feeding the 8-10.

Opened it to cook on Boxing Day, needing to feed 9 of us only to find that tucked under the "crown" and not visible through then packaging were the top joint/ bones of the legs with no meat on them. So this inedible extra added to the weight and made the whole thing look larger than it was, carefully hidden by packaging.

Family portions were small to make sure our guests ate well.

We had a turkey crown from M&S last year and there were no leg parts attached so I do feel ripped off.

If you had a turkey crown from anywhere this Christmas, did it include bits of leg ?

I don't like portion sizes on the packs because they are ridiculously tiny.
My relative works in a working age adult care home (not old) - they have portions that they must give and can't go over. A portion is, allegedly (!) one medium slice or two small ones.

If you look at packaging they have the "recommended amount". Cereals are barely a handful. I'd need 16 just to get me going in the day!

Got a small frozen Asda Turkey and it fed 5 adults, made sandwiches and have already made 1 pot of soup (2 .5 litres) with plenty left in the freezer. Probably make 1 more pot of soup. It said feeds 6-8 but I think it’s a MN Turkey.

Iamclearlyamug · 28/12/2022 16:18

We had a 6-8 m&s turkey crown, certainly didn't have legs, fed 3 adults, a preteen and 2 dogs (don't ask, they're family too!) and probably had about 8 slices left. I thought it was quite generous size wise

Mine had the wings attached- marked as prime wing. Definitely made it different. This was sainsbury

Ended up with this the other year and was fummin....it's not a crown at all fgs, plus who eats a turkey wing (ok, I'm sure some people do but my DH who will eat chicken wings all day long wouldn't touch a turkey wing!).

We had a large chicken from Morrisons and I bet it was far nicer than any turkey you lot had. Fed six and have since had sandwiches and a lovely sticky chicken rice dish last night and there’s still loads left. When will people wake up and realise that turkey is bloody horrible? Grin

RagamuffinCat · 28/12/2022 16:21

Our M&S turkey crown had legs this year too. I think it was the Oakham one.

Spitspotspitspot · 28/12/2022 16:22

Yup the same. M & S “crown” - Bone in with leg bones attached. Quite an anorexic bird all in all and not up to the usual standard.

oakleaffy · 28/12/2022 16:24

A Crown

with Legs??

What are the meatless legs for?
Tormenting the dog?

I had Vegan Christmas Dinner with DS and his GF -

Not kidding- It was lovely!

Some sort of Quorn - really tasty and delicious.

Dahliasrule · 28/12/2022 16:26

Oakham turkey from M and S, same here. Didn’t really think about it but yes, that is a cheat!

Four juicy, tender chicken breasts £4.50 from Tesco

#teamchicken here too. If turkey was so nice we’d eat it all year.

You guys really need to look at the actual weight.

I do go by weight which is why I was annoyed at the "makeweight" inclusion of gristly stuff/tendons and bones which are not edible.

There was no other reason for them to be there.

@Iamclearlyamug - Sorry replied to wrong person— Agree that pets are family though.

Benmac · 28/12/2022 16:33

Last time I pre order from M&S. Same as every one else. Turkey crown would only serve 8 if they one thin slice each. Oyster Rockefeller were awful. Waste of time and money.
Tesco's roast potatoes were black on the bottom. The rest of their veg in festive selection had use by 24/12.
They are taking us for fools.

FancyFanny · 28/12/2022 16:34

Why do you all shop at M&S? It's such a rip off!

I ordered a turkey crown from my butcher- which turned out to be a boneless turkey breast joint (rather than a crown with the breast bone in that I expected). It weighed 2.5kg and was just solid breast meat- it cooked beautifully, was really moist as I butter-basted it and smothered it in bacon, and five of us barely ate half of it so plenty left over for the next day! It cost £34

TheFairyCaravan · 28/12/2022 16:35

We had a turkey crown from Aldi. I don’t know how many it was supposed to serve, it cost £26ish, but there was loads of meat on it (probably too much for what we needed) and not a leg in sight. It was absolutely delicious, too.

Minikievs · 28/12/2022 16:36

We had an M&S feeds 8-10 turkey crown too.
My DS asked for the legs and I told there won't be any, as it's a crown.

We got legs and the sticky up bone bit too! (Breast bone???)
How is that a crown?!?!

AdventFridgeOfShame · 28/12/2022 16:36

My family prefer dark meat. So I bought a massive turkey thigh in the Autumn. After it had been boned it weighed just under a kilo. Add stuffing and it fed three very well for under a fiver.

Decorhate · 28/12/2022 16:37

I’ve found the M&S ones to be very variable. Ours was also an 8-10 size - it was enough for 5 of us with plenty left over for sandwiches for 2 days. But not sure it would have been enough for 10 people for dinner. There were some bones underneath but not as bad as a previous year when there was barely enough meat for 5 people.

I’m definitely going to shop around next year.

MrsRinaDecker · 28/12/2022 16:38

I got a medium frozen whole turkey from Tesco.. said it served 9-11.. I got roast dinner for 4, then leftover roast for 2, 8 rissoles, a tray of turkey nachos and about 3-4 servings of turkey curry. Not bad for £18!

AdventFridgeOfShame · 28/12/2022 16:41

A crown should include the breast bone but not legs or the back bone.
Some stores call boneless turkey breast joints crowns, so it becomes confusing.

Has nobody got any photos of these so called crowns with meatless legs?

runningonberocca · 28/12/2022 16:42

Ours from Sainsburys- had one leg attached! Took a bit of propping up in the roasting tin!!

LizzieSiddal · 28/12/2022 16:43

We had an M&S turkey crown which had stuffing in it and bacon on top for 6-8, No legs and was delicious, really moist and tasty. There were only 5 of us eating meat, visitors have gone home so DH and I have been eating it since, we will finish it off tonight.

LynneBenfield · 28/12/2022 16:43

Cheeky gits.

FWIW, I find those “serves x” things on meat to be total bollox anyway. they seem to assume everyone can only manage 1 wafer thin slice.
