AIBU to feel ripped off by M&S and the Turkey "crown" I bought

Booked a "feeds 8-10" turkey crown in October, picked it up last week. weight seemed ok for feeding the 8-10.

Opened it to cook on Boxing Day, needing to feed 9 of us only to find that tucked under the "crown" and not visible through then packaging were the top joint/ bones of the legs with no meat on them. So this inedible extra added to the weight and made the whole thing look larger than it was, carefully hidden by packaging.

Family portions were small to make sure our guests ate well.

We had a turkey crown from M&S last year and there were no leg parts attached so I do feel ripped off.

If you had a turkey crown from anywhere this Christmas, did it include bits of leg ?

Doesn't really matter whether they're leg or wing bones, they shouldn't be there, never have been in previous years.

Bara bronze turkeys say a turkey crown comes with wings. www.barrabronzes.co.uk/turkey-crown-vs-whole-bird/. I said ages down the thread that they’ll be wings not legs.

CoffeeBoy · 28/12/2022 18:40

From bbc food:

Hugely popular at Christmas, thanks to faster roasting times and ease of preparation, turkey crowns are the breasts left on the bone with the legs removed. With premium turkey crowns you will often find the wings are left attached, these are useful for making gravy and help the crown sit better in the roasting tray. Supermarket turkeys rarely include the wings.

so maybe you’ve got a better class of premium turkey crown this year?

Whenever I order a crown from.our local butchers I always get the legs as well and the butcher will bone them so they go in the freezer and get used later in the year.
I got a whole turkey for 8-10 people this year, cost £80 & it did 8 on Christmas Day, 8 again on Boxing Day, curry for 4 tonight and there's a pie made for 6 for lunch on Friday. Bargain.

Not everyone can afford the local butcher.

@CoffeeBoy if you can afford M&S, sainsburys and tesco you can afford your butcher!

QuerulousMegapode · 28/12/2022 19:03

Bought our usual Capon from the local market! £19.00. So much nicer than a turkey from anywhere. And this year we didn't have to buy a mail-order catering-sized one. It would probably have done 8 portions of a traditional Christmas meal as there was a lot more than half left over from three generous servings.

Notthetoothfairy · 28/12/2022 19:07

We had an M&S ‘perfect’ turkey crown and it was pretty good and fed the right number (us twice though, to be fair, we had a lot of sides which my DC prefer to lots of meat). No random bones in there.

We then bought another type of crown with stuffing from them yesterday which was £52 down to £19. Again, no bones but I think this one was quite a lot stingier with the meat. We were perfectly happy for the £19 but I think I would have felt robbed at £52 😀

whynotwhatknot · 28/12/2022 19:10

i never belive the portion sizes shops say but ours from iceland 19 pounds fed 7 and wa over a quarter left

Thepollonator · 28/12/2022 19:12

I got a turkey crown, feeds 8-10 from Tesco, that had legs/wings neatly tucked underneath and by 27th it had gone green, so chucked a load of it away!

bellabasset · 28/12/2022 19:16

I bought a small fresh crown of turkey from Tesco to feed 4. It was about £13, and I melted a little butter and oil to bast it, covered it in streaky bacon and put sausage meat stuffing in for the last hour. I make pigs in blankets using chipolatas wrapped in bacon. I cooked it for just over 2 hours. That would have served 6

Without meaning to sound like a smug soing so.
Turkey isn’t dry if you prepare and cook it correctly

🙌🙌🙌 I’ve never had a dry turkey, mine is always juicy!

AppleandSpice · 28/12/2022 19:32

We also got a crown from Tesco, was meant to feed 10-12. (We had 7 for dinner) Also had the legs/wings attached plus a rather long neck! Never seen anything like it.
The bloody thing was lop sided and wouldn’t sit right in the tray.

Theres no way it would have fed 12, we usually have loads of leftovers which we gladly welcome, but not enough to do the obligatory Boxing Day stew!

DelilahBucket · 28/12/2022 20:17

There shouldn't have been any legs with a crown. I suspect they were making the weight up as our butchers crown was half the size this year and almost the same price!

Crikeyalmighty · 28/12/2022 20:19

4.8kg locally slow grown capon from good butchers - totally delicious. £52 but worth it and nicer than Turkey too we all thought.

4 adults Xmas day - large portions
4 adults boxing day buffet
3 adults- large stir fry on 27th

cristinayangstwistedsister · 28/12/2022 20:26

£80 for an M n S turkey crown for 12, no way would it have fed 12 and it was tasteless

Crikeyalmighty · 28/12/2022 20:26

I am a big shopper at M&S during the year but at Xmas I tend to only buy the party food bits and cheese and juice from there as get meat from butchers and veg from farm shop - I've always found the Xmas meat offerings nice enough, but overpriced and not generous

Iwant2move · 28/12/2022 20:28

My turkey crown was delivered from Cook Foods. It served eight, cost £50, had no legs or wings attached and we have only just finished the left overs today.

OoooohMatron · 28/12/2022 20:32

Slightly off topic but anyone paying £30 for a turkey crown is a fool.

Nagado · 28/12/2022 20:55

We had an M&S Oakham turkey crown to feed 12-14. No extra bits included but we got six nice portions and a stingy half portion from it. I don’t think it was as nice as it normally is either.

I’ve never minded paying over the average price because it has always been worth it, but I think we’ll try somewhere else next year.

birder · 28/12/2022 20:56

I've just dug this out of the recycling, this is the underside of the Iceland butter basted turkey crown. Thoughts?

Not turkey but Christmas pudding wreath. Extortionate, only got it because DH was drooling at it on TV. Tiny, absolutely tiny in a big box. Watch yourselves, M and S, it’s only the food sales propping you up.

Mummymidwife33 · 28/12/2022 21:01

Our M&S Turkey crown was lovely, no leg bits and fed loads of us with leftovers (I had 14 but we also had beef so not sure how many it fed- I still have some left)

Munches · 28/12/2022 21:06

Ours was delicious. Free range bronze feathered Crown on the bone from Waitrose. Fed ten. Was beautiful and not a bit of waste and extra left over too.
I used to buy from M and S for Christmas but haven’t for the past few years.

Thymely · 28/12/2022 21:21

My butcher unfortunately closed down this year after covid and energy price rises, so I got a whole turkey from Costco (on line) Jimmies farm Bronze with a pop up it's done thingy. It was really moist and tender, I just made turkey and ham pie with some of the leftovers and froze two lots of potential turkey curry.

evemillbank · 28/12/2022 21:21

That's odd. I buy an M&S turkey crown every year and have never had one with that included.I'd struggle to cook it as I'm a vegetarian.. I hope I never get one like that!
