AIBU to feel ripped off by M&S and the Turkey "crown" I bought

Booked a "feeds 8-10" turkey crown in October, picked it up last week. weight seemed ok for feeding the 8-10.

Opened it to cook on Boxing Day, needing to feed 9 of us only to find that tucked under the "crown" and not visible through then packaging were the top joint/ bones of the legs with no meat on them. So this inedible extra added to the weight and made the whole thing look larger than it was, carefully hidden by packaging.

Family portions were small to make sure our guests ate well.

We had a turkey crown from M&S last year and there were no leg parts attached so I do feel ripped off.

If you had a turkey crown from anywhere this Christmas, did it include bits of leg ?

We had an 8-10 crown from M&S - delicious and no extra parts. Bought one yesterday too for freezer- no obvious extra parts.

Mollyplop999 · 28/12/2022 17:21

No bine in mine but certainly not enough to feed between 6 and 8. I also had to ask them to swop it as there was green mould on it. I won't bother with M&S next year .

MerryChristmasTree · 28/12/2022 17:23

Go to Lidl or Aldi next time. I paid £35 for our whole turkey and it fed us for Christmas Day and then two more meals. A bit like the mn chicken.

I would complain though.

Rainbow1901 · 28/12/2022 17:33

Had a frozen bacon covered turkey crown from Iceland - was lovely and moist and not too much left over but then we had a small bit of beef, pigs in blankets and gammon ham too!
If anything I would be inclined to complain about the ham from Sainsbury - when carving we noticed that the fat/skin surrounding it was probably half the weight of the actual joint - so definitely ripped off there!

Yetanothername99 · 28/12/2022 17:35

It seems the budget supermarkets were the best of the bunch this year going by this thread

wigywhoo · 28/12/2022 17:36

Sone shocking stories here. Go to your local butcher- our Turkey Crown, 1.6 kg so small as feeding 3 £23. Free Range - Delicious.

Americano75 · 28/12/2022 17:37

I complained on twitter and they asked for everything bar my knicker size. Luckily I've got a Sparks card so all of my digital receipts are on there, plus we had the packaging etc. Even then they still asked if it was 'just' the leftovers that we couldn't eat. Apart from the fact that it took four scented candles to tackle the horrendous stench of it, even on Christmas Day I remember not being particularly impressed with it. We always get our turkey from M&S and we've always been happy until now.

ScrappyMoggy · 28/12/2022 17:38

I had one! No leg hiding under it but I commented to DH I must have carved it terribly as it wouldn’t have fed 8 adults. It fed three with leftovers for sandwiches but not enough for sandwiches and another meal which we had planned. Not sure I will go with M&S again next year.

No dead flesh on my vegan roast.

🙄

No dead flesh on my vegan roast.

Wouldn't be vegan otherwise would it?

Danni7297 · 28/12/2022 17:42

I used to buy M&S turkey crowns but always found them too small and never fed the amount of people they said. I actually complained one year Because a ‘feeds 8-10’ came out the oven looking like a pigeon!

Someone recommended Iceland ones to me and I’ve had them the last few years. I cook it from frozen. Says it serves 8-10. £20
We had it Christmas Day with 2 adults and 2 children who eat turkey (we also have beef so not just 1 meat so maybe not as much gets eaten) we then had sandwiches that evening and Boxing Day had 6 adults (we have beef and gammon Boxing Day too) but there was more than enough for sandwiches and rolls that evening too.

It’s nice turkey too.

Isseywith3witchycats · 28/12/2022 17:42

I got the £20 perfect turkey breast without bacon wrap from iceland no bones pure meat and it did 7 dinners on christmas day a couple of sandwiches christmas night and a large turkey and veg pie yesterday well happy the meat was moist and tasty

No dead flesh on my vegan roast.

Did you go nut roast or fake meat one? I stuck with nut roast like the last 30 odd years. But saw loads of fake meat ones and wondered what they were like.

back in the day m&s nut roasts were the only option for vegetarians (now no where near the best)

Bookworm333 · 28/12/2022 17:44

Yes, had exactly the same issue with out M&S crown. I thought they were wings but no meat on them and undoubtedly added to the weight. Whole thing very bony and scrawny - enough for 4 but no more, said it should serve 8! Last year just got a Sainsbury's one and it was much better. Wondered if it was something to do with bird flu - shortage of birds means more scrawny ones being sold to meet demand? Although I thought that was free range birds, which mine definitely wasn't. This was my first M&S Christmas pre-order and I won't be back.

TellySavalashairbrush · 28/12/2022 17:47

I stopped buying M&S Christmas food last year. Not great taste or quality and so expensive. Did most of mine at Aldi this year and it was fine, much cheaper too.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 28/12/2022 17:49

We had a small turkey crown from Lidl that easily fed 6 of us and was delicious. Package didn't contain any bones or legs 😜

Georgyporky · 28/12/2022 17:50

How did M&S respond to your complaint ?

Windbeneathmybingowings · 28/12/2022 17:51

This is all part of stealth rationing I think

pompei8309 · 28/12/2022 17:51

M&S had two types this year, I bought the one with stuffing and it fed 8 people easy , no bones

BootifulLoser · 28/12/2022 17:53

I've always been disappointed with turkey crown. at Christmas.. hence I don't buy them any more. Dry and not worth the inflated price, and the 'stuffing' always reminds me of cat litter!
I've never had any legs included but I wouldn't have minded a bit of dark meat. That's the best part!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 28/12/2022 17:54

KarmaStar · 28/12/2022 14:55

No dead flesh on my vegan roast.

I'm sure that was very nice for you, dear. Why not run along and let the grown ups talk a little more about their food now?

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 28/12/2022 17:54

We've always bought our crown ( frozen) from Tesco.
Always generous portions and loads left over for cold cut buffet , sandwiches and curries etc...

TrashyPanda · 28/12/2022 18:21

PuppyMonkey · 28/12/2022 16:19

We had a large chicken from Morrisons and I bet it was far nicer than any turkey you lot had. Fed six and have since had sandwiches and a lovely sticky chicken rice dish last night and there’s still loads left. When will people wake up and realise that turkey is bloody horrible? Grin

If you are a halfway decent cook, turkey is delicious. It’s only poor cooks who complain about it being tasteless and/or dry.

our 5.4 kg turkey was under £20, fed 6 on the day, and so far we’ve had another 12 meals, plus made broth (is there anything better than turkey broth?) and there is still enough for turkey hash tomorrow.

sounds like all the turkey crowns came from the same supplier. Not sure how M&S justify their prices.

AAT65 · 28/12/2022 18:30

Family got a turkey breast from butcher with a ham, chipolatas, streaky bacon, stuffing, gravy and a sack of potatoes for £50. Stuffed and rolled the breast and would serve 12. Shop local.

larkstar · 28/12/2022 18:30

Waitrose - a good piece of meat, no unwanted extras. I cooked it slowly in the bag on low as described, 140C I think we we had plenty of time (you punch a single small hole in the bag first) - it browned nicely but if anything, and maybe I'm being harsh because I expected something slightly better, it was still a bit of the dry side - expensive at £40!
