AIBU to feel ripped off by M&S and the Turkey "crown" I bought

Booked a "feeds 8-10" turkey crown in October, picked it up last week. weight seemed ok for feeding the 8-10.

Opened it to cook on Boxing Day, needing to feed 9 of us only to find that tucked under the "crown" and not visible through then packaging were the top joint/ bones of the legs with no meat on them. So this inedible extra added to the weight and made the whole thing look larger than it was, carefully hidden by packaging.

Family portions were small to make sure our guests ate well.

We had a turkey crown from M&S last year and there were no leg parts attached so I do feel ripped off.

If you had a turkey crown from anywhere this Christmas, did it include bits of leg ?

We had the same! Will try somewhere else next year

Friendofdennis · 28/12/2022 15:36

Aldi crown for £18 no legs. Got 6 main meals from it as well as two turkey and vegetable ‘cottage pies’ But the best buy this Christmas has been a leg of salt marsh lamb from local butcher which although £40 provided 10 very generous servings and was delicious

Ramsbottom · 28/12/2022 15:36

If you have a photo can you post it?

Bunnycat101 · 28/12/2022 15:37

Ours was meant to feed 6 which it did- just. However, one of the group was a 3yo who ate barely anything, a child who ate a child sized portion.

CharityShopChic · 28/12/2022 15:40

Our M&S crown (serves 6-8) was about £46. It served as many as it said it should, but not nearly as many leftovers as last year.

Won't be buying again. Bought a crown for the freezer in Tesco on Boxing Day, larger than the M&S one and it was £22 originally. OK, there's no stuffing and no bacon over the top, but even if you have to buy that yourself it's still a lot cheaper.3

LouisCatorze · 28/12/2022 15:42

Possibly with Bird Flu around, some suppliers have been forced to add the extras to comply with weights specified by supermarkets?

Sure in the scheme of things that a 'crown' is quite an expensive way to buy a bird. You're paying well over the odds for the convenience, surely?

Maybe time to defect to your local butcher instead?

Shinygreenbeetle · 28/12/2022 15:43

Not quite the same, but equally as annoying - supposedly pre-ordered an XL fresh turkey with my Christmas shop from Asda, along with several other ingredients such as spices for brining, as I usually do. Turkey intended to feed 12-14 people as had 7 of us for Christmas Day dinner, and had meal planned for the leftovers.
Order arrived and amongst the (mostly unannounced) replacements, I received a medium frozen Turkey intended for 6-8 people.
Couldn’t brine due to it needing defrosting, so waste of other ingredients purchased - plus the turkey just about served us all on the day - so a meal down without leftovers. REALLY irritating…!

Maybe it was sourced by someone who believes in the very MN chicken that goes on forever.

Im sure the turkeys mentioned on this thread could easily have served everyone, with leftovers, if only they had paired them with a massive salad!

birder · 28/12/2022 15:49

So glad I spotted this thread, my DD thought I'd made a mistake. Crown from Iceland, it was weird, cavernous underneath and legs attached, windpipe too.

Impossible to carve, really odd.

Hugasauras · 28/12/2022 15:51

We had an Asda crown, no legs or bones. I always size up though as portion sizes advertised are always too small. So for 9 people I would have def got bigger than 8-10 I think.

OnTheRoll · 28/12/2022 15:53

Completeley off topic, but do people really pay £60-70 for pre-ordered turkey crown? I always get just a full regular turkey from Sainsbury's, at 6kg for about £26 and it comes out tender and moist. Lots of leftovers afterwards too

We got a crown from Iceland, it didn't have legs or bones and was very nice.

We did too and it was one of the best ones we've ever had. The fact it was wrapped in paper seemed to make it moister than normal. I don't particularly like turkey but I enjoyed that!

JackieDaws · 28/12/2022 15:53

Bird bones weigh very little so wouldn't have added much to the weight of your crown.

As for the gash hidden by the packaging, were you bothered by it for welfare reasons or aesthetic reasons?

Hugasauras · 28/12/2022 15:53

I was actually really impressed with the Asda one. Loads of stuffing, really moist, easy to cook. Did three of us for Xmas dinner and ample leftovers for two/three more days.

Fairyliz · 28/12/2022 15:53

I went to Iceland and got a frozen crown for £20 (well I only paid £18 as over 60). It was absolutely delicious I was really impressed and we have had 12 servings from it.
No legs or wings included.

Lordofmyflies · 28/12/2022 15:59

I bought our turkey online this year from Farmison. It was £50 for an organic 2kg breast. It was all meat, served 6 adults and leftovers for a further 3 meals. Bloody lovely

IneedanewTV · 28/12/2022 16:01

We used our local butcher this year. £50 for crown wrapped in bacon. It fed 6 on Xmas day, 4 Boxing Day, a curry yesterday and 5 double portions in the freezer. It was delicious. I will not be supporting supermarkets again.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 28/12/2022 16:02

You guys really need to look at the actual weight.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 28/12/2022 16:02

Oh and shop at your local butcher!

Splonker · 28/12/2022 16:04

I had a Tescos turkey thigh & it was fantastic. It fed 7 handsomely and cost £6. I'll buy it again next year.

CoffeeBoy · 28/12/2022 16:05

PatientlyWaiting21 · 28/12/2022 16:02

Oh and shop at your local butcher!

Not everyone can afford the local butcher.

Mirabai · 28/12/2022 16:05

Cook stuffed Turkey crown 2600g serves 8 (with ample leftovers) no legs or bones. £35.

fairgame84 · 28/12/2022 16:08

Not everyone has a local butcher. We don't.

Nevermind91 · 28/12/2022 16:10

That's really not on at all. Send them a strong complaint with photos, if you have them.

We had a similar one (feeds 8-10) from Sainsbury's. No hidden extras and fed five of us over two days, and there's still plenty left for a curry.

CrapBucket · 28/12/2022 16:11

dancinfeet · 28/12/2022 14:27

yes- small turkey crown from lidl- feeds 8, had legs attached and tucked under, also was arched in like a really odd way in the packaging so that it looked as though the breast was much bigger / thicker than it was (the legs were folded underneath what was essentially a hollow cavity), in reality it would have served 4 people a decent turkey serving or 8 people a very small meat portion.

Snap, this is what mine was like too
