AIBU to feel ripped off by M&S and the Turkey "crown" I bought

Booked a "feeds 8-10" turkey crown in October, picked it up last week. weight seemed ok for feeding the 8-10.

Opened it to cook on Boxing Day, needing to feed 9 of us only to find that tucked under the "crown" and not visible through then packaging were the top joint/ bones of the legs with no meat on them. So this inedible extra added to the weight and made the whole thing look larger than it was, carefully hidden by packaging.

Family portions were small to make sure our guests ate well.

We had a turkey crown from M&S last year and there were no leg parts attached so I do feel ripped off.

If you had a turkey crown from anywhere this Christmas, did it include bits of leg ?

We have had a few crowns from M&S over the years, some better than others but found the amount of meat on them getting less and less so much so that we opted for their British Oakham Turkey Breast Joint for the last three years, no bones. They started off being around £21 for 8-10 guests and are now £28 for 6-8 guests. Thankfully there are only four of us plus we always do a beef joint along with it so always lots left over. We are thinking however of looking elsewhere as a lot of their stuff is either shrinking or watery, found their cauliflower cheese dish smaller this year and their suede and carrot mash watery. Such a shame.

I’ve had an M and S crown before and no such problems.

Did you take a photograph of it?

Id get on to their customer services as they’re usually quite good at m and s

Turkey crown from local butcher. It was huge. Easily would have fed the 8-10 it said, no leg bits.

No dead flesh on my vegan roast.

Well no pet obviously not 🙄

Wooddie · 28/12/2022 15:03

Bought a frozen turkey crown from Tesco. Bought one for many years and never had a problem. Opaque packaging so got a surprise when the crown turned out to have a large leg on one side and a half leg on the other plus a lot of additional skin underneath. It rocked so very hard to carve and not much meat on it! Rang Tesco and have got a full refund.

Yetanothername99 · 28/12/2022 15:03

I got a 3-4 crown and it could have served 6 with left overs. From Asda.

Countmeout · 28/12/2022 15:05

Are there not 2 types of crown from Marks, one with bone in and one with bone out. I had the latter. I always buy 10-12 to feed 8 and have sufficient left overs for sandwiches etc.

Muffinsong · 28/12/2022 15:07

i had the same with an Aldi “crown” legs and a massive neck tucked underneath! I’m guessing they do it to make the weight up! It’s disgusting and I will be complaining! There was hardly any meat on it!

No dead flesh on my vegan roast.

Ffs, this is what gives vegans a bad name.

Stop it.

Mine had the wings attached- marked as prime wing. Definitely made it different. This was sainsbury

We have, for the past 3 years now, got our Turkey crown from Aldi. Really lovely, never any complaints. Was just about to recommend them when I said dh (he cooks Christmas dinner not me) that you had added legs and bone underneath and he said oh yeah ours did this year too! I was surprised as previous years it never has and this year dh spent £27 on it whereas previous years we spent no more than £16.

As tasty as it was, there wasn’t as much meat as we’d had from previously smaller crowns but with the added legs/bones it pushed up the weight and therefore the price but you’re not actually getting more. Very sly. Thankfully we have a gammon too as the kids love it so everyone had an ok portion of meat, not enough for many to seconds or for leftovers the following couple of days which was disappointing.

Didiplanthis · 28/12/2022 15:11

I won ! My sainsburies delivery on 23rd, substituted my rolled breast for a crown which was £18 rather than £14 with a price match... THEN it was reduced to £3 as so near Xmas.. it wasn't huge but enough..

Jellycats4life · 28/12/2022 15:12

My parents bought a turkey crown as always, and were also surprised to find legs attached. How weird.

snowsilver · 28/12/2022 15:12

Mine was from Tesco, £20 to feed 3 to 7.
We had four meat eaters and there was enough leftover for 4 more portions. It was just right as no-one really likes Turkey but they complain if I suggest alternative. Also I don't want leftovers for the same reason.

Cakecakecheese · 28/12/2022 15:14

We got a crown from Iceland, it didn't have legs or bones and was very nice.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 28/12/2022 15:15

I have bought the M&S turkey crown for years. It has always been on the breast bone but has never included the legs. I have always found that their guide as to how many it will feed is on the mean side and so buy one two sizes larger than they say.

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/12/2022 15:16

I bought the M&S frozen stuffed duck and it was a total rip off. Mostly stuffing surrounded by 0.5- 2cms of dry duck.Xmas Sad Luckily I'd also done 4 confit duck legs and a ham.

mouse26 · 28/12/2022 15:16

I got a medium turkey crown from aldi which also included legs. Luckily there was enough to go round but the legs were just a pointless waste of my oven space

quicklybeendrivenmad · 28/12/2022 15:18

Always got my Christmas food from M&S until last years Turkey was tough and my marrow bone steak pie when I opened it was smashed to bits, luckily a new butcher opened up near us this year and is fab so sacked M&S got a Turkey Crown to serve 10 ended up only having to serve 5, its done turkey curry for 10 (froze 1/2 of it) Turkey sandwiches twice and the dog is enjoying the rest.

On top of that got a whole gammon, a rib of beef (looks huge) and a masssive pork joint which he hand scored £90 bargain when I think how much I would have spent in M&S also used local fishmonger rather than prepared M&S starters much better quality and a lot more for my money

LooksBetterWithAFaceMask · 28/12/2022 15:19

My Morrisons crown didn’t have the legs and I was genuinely surprised at the amount of meat we got out of it. 5 of us had it on Christmas days and 5 of us had a couple of sandwiches out of it Boxing Day and dh had some with leftover veg etc. yesterday. It just kept coming.

Willowswood · 28/12/2022 15:20

It seems as though M&S were crap this year judging by replies. Maybe try a normal run of the mill supermarket next time?

My Turkey crown served 12 and was only £26, complete bargain and loads left. It wasn't even dry either, absolutely delicious.

fairgame84 · 28/12/2022 15:24

My sainsbury's one had legs much to DH's delight.
It had a weird chewy texture as well. Not impressed.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 28/12/2022 15:27

What a con! Unless it was stated on the packaging, I'd be asking for a refund.

I agree with PP who are not impressed by M&S food this year. My frozen black forest gateaux have very few cherries in them and are nowhere near as good as the fresh ones they had last year (which I ate three of!) The sherry trifle went in the bin, but the "Best ever" trifle was as good as last year. The frozen berry cheesecake was meh.

I don't have a big oven, but we always buy a whole turkey, as there's tons of meat on it. I got a frozen free range from Tesco for 25 quid back in October. It will do two dinners and loads of sandwiches and it was lovely. We just cook it first and wrap it in a towel while everything else goes in.

What i find odd is that staff from these shops must sit down and have a good chat and plan about how to make things look bigger for the customer than they actually are. Maybe there are secret departments dedicated to this cause!

How to say "I'm an utter wanker " without saying a word 🙄
